Dear Jolla, after ignoring the issue for more then a year i personally think it would be great that you guys select one brand of the available HTC Desire 310 spare batteries, test it and declare it as safe to use. many user do not care and will use it anyway, but some might want an official statement then we could close the issue 'together' Thank you very much !

What's the use? Jolla won't be liable even after announcing such a testrun validation incase something goes wrong, will it? So ofc it would be nice to hear what they think about the whole issue, as they are avoiding a shitstorm currently.

when you read all the threads on spare battery you see that people are afraid to put in the wrong battery i think mainly not due to void warranty but being afraid of explosions i have no clue how likely this is i thinks after selling a phone with replaceable battery without available ones, this is the minimum that could be expected

I agree, we desperately need a solution that is benefitial to both sides soon. Let's see if Jolla reacts to this.

For legal reasons I don't think Jolla can give any response consenting use of HTC battery. And I think they would be liable if they say something is safe to use and it's not.

But generally modern (quality) batteries are quite safe unless the case in punctured or there's some other mechanical damage. There's a protection circuit integrated that should mostly prevent (electrical) abusive use cases.

If voltages match, I wouldn't worry too much. Jolla probably uses quite reasonable charging currents and the non-standard replacement battery probably meets the specs. There's differences in batteries, but usually similar batteries have similar specs :) Charging in higher temperatures might cause problems if there's a big difference. Even then it's not usually a problem here in the north, in more southern countries it's of course a different thing. In theory if replacement battery's maximum charging current drops much faster in high temperatures and the phone charges with too much current it might cause problems, but probably difference between batteries is so little it does not matter.

If there is a different battery thermistor / battery identification resistor, there might be some problems and that usually means the device just does not charge, but the reported battery temperature should match original battery.

Fuel Gauge (reporting batt%) is usually characterized for specific battery model, so its accuracy might suffer from the switch, but with roughly the same battery should get similar results.

REMEMBER: if the battery starts swelling etc. stop the use immediately.

My two cents, I am not condoning any use of non-standard batteries ;)

Jolla will not encourage you to use a battery not sourced by them, it's doubtful they'll pay any attention to what goes on here, and even less likely that they'll bother to comment, I've ordered one off ebay, (I even emailed the seller and told him to look into re-listing them as a Jolla compatible battery) I don't have the time to wait for a company that doesn't want to back up hardware I paid good money for, for an average spec' phone. Another fine example of a company backtracking on it's promises 'to listen', I won't be investing in any more of your hardware again Jolla, great sales techniques, way to go.

HTC Desire 310 battery uses a different temperature chip, so it can't be confirmed as safe. The Jolla Phone does not know its temperature, so the phone can't slow down its processing / shut down the power in cases the battery exceeds the limits.

However, according to my test review, depending on the manufacturer, I would say some compatibles are safe enough for temporary use. All other parts except the temperature seems to match, and if the overheating sensor on the battery itself is working, it should be safe.

i will close the question even though the goal was to receive some statement from jolla. obviously useless.

The HTC Desire 310 compatible batteries you tested have NO thermistor at all but "emulate" it with a 10 kOhm resistor, so they always show about 25 degrees.

Ok, great to know. Do you happen to know any similar sized with a thermistor?

No, sorry. I have found even high quality Galaxy S3 batteries using fixed resistors.

ive been using htc 310 battery for 2 months now. Works perfect and don't need to put any papers below the battery to prevent shutdowns like the original battery needed. I would recommend getting htc d310 battery if experiencing shutdowns or the original battery is at the end of lifecycle(like me who had this device for 2 years now almost). Personally I believe Jolla will never release official spare batteries on sale. my battery is branded as Xlonger from batteryupgrade.com
