What's in partner space for Jolla Phone and Tablet owners? [answered]

As I've understood, the partner space is developed for Jolla's local marketing purposes, and especially used by local manufacturer/retailer partners, allowing them to fill this space with local services, for example by running an Android marketplace on this screen.

How about us who haven't made a purchase via a 3rd party partner, but directly from Jolla? What options do we have for this partner space screen if we update our devices to Sailfish OS 2.0?

In the shared images so far, only Android apps have been shown running on this screen. Is partner space exclusive for Android apps, or can it be used to run Sailfish OS apps as well? What about on devices without Android support installed, or will that be even mandatory on Sailfish OS 2.0?

There were also few Android related mentions on release notes of 1.1.7, question on privacy of those here. While unanswered, does Sailfish OS 1.1.7 update include already some features required for updating to Sailfish OS 2.0, or is it possible to update from 1.1.6 to 2.0, as the time gap between those seems to be left quite short?

Quite a lot of questions included in this question, sorry for taking some of your time Sailors (if answered), but I feel like these might be important for many of us. The last paragraph isn't too important, if the earlier privacy question can be answered.

Thanks for notifying - This doesn't yet mean it'll be an option in the user interface, but that would be really nice indeed

I try to answer according to what I heard around the MWC15 time including my own opinion:

  • Partnerspace won't be available and accessible by default. It's a space available to official SailfishOS partners & distributors and was used at MWC to demonstrate that SailfishOS can be adjusted for specific use for future business partners. At MWC there are many "business men" visitors who are interested in possible partnerships, investements opportunities etc... With the shown partnerspace Jolla could say: "Hey look, that's where you could implement features and easy access to your product - SailfishOS can be customized for your needs".

  • Partnerspace isn't exclusively for Android apps. As we saw in other partnerspace demos, anything can be possible (for example news feed to recent videos, offers etc). Let's for example say that a distributor of logistics/management software sells their software on SailfishOS devices and thus partners up with Jolla - the partnerspace would be used to directly access the features of their software.

So I think as a normal Jolla Phone/Tablet owner you don't need to worry about partnerspace and won't have to deal with it. Maybe Jolla has plans for other uses with that space (for example being activated through 3rd party apps), but probably wouldn't call it "partnerspace" in that case.

Would be pretty bad if it was just unused empty space for Jolla owners.

It's not a empty space since it's won't be activated at all :) So you'll horizontally swipe between event-screen and multitasking-screen (app launcher grid is swipe-up). With partnerspace there would be 1 more horizontal window in the screen-rotation, like: event-screen --> multitasking-screen --> partnerspace ---> event-screen ...

Thanks, sounds like a direct answer to the question. By what you wrote, the updating issue mentioned in the question is not related at all, so accepting and closing - reopen if needed

thanks, but let's hear if we get a gui too

simo ( 2015-08-08 00:51:12 +0200 )edit

what gui you talking about?

a settings option, pulley-menu option, tap-and-hold menu option... whatever might be good and intuitive to select the wanted app. Thinking about it... Settings > Apps > tap-and-hold on app > "Select for Partner Space" would be quite ok. Another option might be tap-and-hold on partner space > "Select app" > directs user to launcher view to pick one. Something like that. But any easy option might compromise the marketing idea Jolla has...

It's not quite possible, application should provide interface to be an "partnerspace". Or some master app can make other app to partner.

coderus ( 2015-08-08 01:03:46 +0200 )edit

So any gui options are opted out?
