Why did Marc Dillon leave?
I really wonder. Is 'to pursue other challenges' a good reason to leave jolla/sailfish behind now? I'm a bit sad to see him go...
We have moved to a new Sailfish OS Forum. Please start new discussions there.
I really wonder. Is 'to pursue other challenges' a good reason to leave jolla/sailfish behind now? I'm a bit sad to see him go...
Hi, this is not the answer to whether "pursing other challenges" is a good reason to leave. Nor is it answering "why" Marc is leaving (I'll leave him to answer that for himself if he gets the mention notification - Edit: if I can figure out how to mention the right Marc...)
Here are some of my own comments, which I hope qualifies as an answer (if not, I can repost this as a comment).
We are sad to see Marc leave (at least I personally am). However, that's not the end of the world. It certainly is not the end of Jolla. We have many strong leaders in the company, maybe they're not as visible as Marc was, but nevertheless just as important in guiding our ship where it needs to go.
In addition, as some have mentioned, the rhythm in a startup is quite dynamic. We have had many more people joining us than leaving us. Perhaps it's just the timing of some of the leavers recently (some deemed more newsworthy than others). I should probably mention that we recently also have Antti Öhrling joining us as the new COO, who is carrying on the great work done by Marc and others.
Lastly, Marc has not stopped believing in Jolla and Sailfish OS. At least he reassured us sailors. And I trust him on that.
@cybette with style takes the stage & sets things straight ;) thanks!
tortoisedoc ( 2015-09-07 17:28:58 +0200 )editWell that's reassuring, let's see where SFOS 2.0 leads. Well sadness is obvious because of Marc being a wonderful person, it ain't good to see him leave. Yet I can't say I have hopes with Jolla because you guys already exceeded my hopes. Being a startup, it was a pretty good experience with Jolla. Consider me greedy but all I'd want for now is the email client in my phone to work properly. Jokes apart, it has been a spectacular journey though with some hicccups! All I'd say is it'd be good if Jolla continues to be the "Agile boat" because the sea is pretty rough now.
vds5344 ( 2015-09-07 17:33:12 +0200 )editWill Marc use a Jolla as main cell phone wherever he goes pursuing new challenges?
If he does, than it is great to have high profile industry people promoting Sailfish externally.
If he doesn't or won't communicate about it, it is good that he leaves.
Certainly I think there are more than enough people capable of making Sailfish a success but if you need help I will do my best to take up Marc's job ad interim.
I promise most standard features we love and that don't heavily rely on external licenses Harmattan will be included in next 6 months, Chinese / Vietnamese / Russian / Dutch hardware partners without making Sailfish look like Android and all this for normal employee salary.
Thanks to Cybette, and Jolla, for confirming Mr. Dillon left.
Now. A clarification, from my side, to Cybettes words.
As a company, Jolla can not say much more, at least without the concent from Mr. dillon.
Jolla can tell Mr. Dillon left.
Jolka can not, without the concent from Mr. Dillon, tell why or where Mr. Dillon left. That, is soleky a decision of Mr. Dillon as of if and when he wants to announce that.
This, is called protection of the individual rights, and is something we should all respect.
Bull. Both parties can say whatever they want. Unless they both signed an agreement on what not to say, in which case it will become a contract law matter.
Sounds to me Jolla and Dillon did not part ways amicably. The whole non-communication thing is a red flag.
accumulator ( 2015-09-11 17:00:35 +0200 )editProbably because he got out voted on user interface changes and got frustrated with the new UI, so he decided to quit. wasn't the #unlike Sailfish UI mostly his vision? just speculating here!!
Or maybe, just maybe, he wanted to - actually do something else. I know, how crazy, just to change a job to pursue new challenges and different kind of things that will take your career forward maybe. Yeah, no cnspiracy theories, how boring is that, just a guy changing a job, hmh..
raketti ( 2015-09-08 12:13:18 +0200 )editBetter question would be: why does Jolla not comment on the apparent departure of their most public and prominent leader?
need I say no more.....
Why do you even think it's any of your business? If your local supermarket's top dog went working somewhere else, would you also go picket at their doors until both the supermarket and the former top dog, maybe even the new place he works at, issue a statement on the why and the how?
nthn ( 2015-09-14 01:28:53 +0200 )edit@nthn, I agree, however in your local supermarket example you have to add that, although ppl there work very hard, they face a very tough competition from big corporates, several times products are delayed, missing or cancelled, they recently split stores for their fresh and frozen products, and their top dog went.
Since I do like shopping at my local supermarket, and although I respect the right of any top dog to go, I cannot stop feel worried about my local supermarket?
pmelas ( 2015-09-14 10:27:24 +0200 )editIt is very, very unprofessional not to announce or communicate the departure of one of the leadership team. Damages trust and credibility. It is rediculous to declare that Jolla can't talk about his motivation. Dillon leaving quietly via the back door.... BAD NEWS. Dillon is the one who made the statements, promises and announcements over the past years, are they gone to? I suppose so. No reassuring statements. So either the situation at Jolla is bad, or their communication strategy is bad. Possibly both.
FJVA ( 2015-09-14 20:56:22 +0200 )editNOW the question is the resource is real or not? can you confirm this? really cannot believe it
You doubt Cybette's word? Welcome @dknight to Jolla Together! Meet 'Cybette' aka Carol Chen, Community Chief, of Jolla!, show some respect, especially by not posting speculation as an 'answer', when in fact your words are merely a comment on a situation you and I, know little about.
Spam Hunter ( 2015-09-08 01:29:38 +0200 )edit@Markkyboy come on, you have obviously seen @dknight is new to this place - so please don't accuse her/him of lacking respect. Also, look on the timestamps of the answers, this one was well before @cybette's. @dknight I agree that this should rather be a comment than an answer.

I'm sad, too. I loved his energy and his enthusiasm. - I remember an TV interview he gave around January 2014 (Yle Areena TV), and if I remember correctly he said then that he doesn't plan to stay with Jolla for a long time to come, that his passion was to create something new and that he'll probably will move on once things have settled down. (Unfortunately, the video is no longer online, so I cannot check if my memory is correct.) If this is really what he felt then, now could have been the time to do just that...
ossi1967 ( 2015-09-07 14:00:11 +0200 )editHe is in InvestorEye Hopefully it is not because he's stopped to believe in Jolla and SailfishOS ;-)

Seems that once again jollacommunity is the last to know.
kt ( 2015-09-07 14:49:42 +0200 )editJolla doesn't exist out of one person only, even if he was there from the beginning. At some point in time we will probably know more about the decision to leave the company.
