The new pulley menu is simply awful! (1.1.9.28/Eineheminlampi)

This new pulley menu released in early access 1.1.9.28 is simply horrible! Sailfish's elementary visuals are getting worse and worse when the OS evolves -- at first over-indicating swipes (in earlier release) and now over-indicating pulley menu selections in every single app! This is not the way to go, please understand your strong fanbase and offer option to opt-out and revert back to the original.

I understand that new users might need more guidance, but advanced users should have a way to revert back to original and I think the newcomers would still pick the earlier more Sailfish-like behaviour after they get used to Sailfish.

Where can we find a setting to revert back to the previous one?

Please vote this if you agree!

I just have to add, after using the new pulley menu for a while, that the blink-blink delay of the new pulley menu is very annoying. I hope there will be official cure for that. I don't see this as an issue that "one just has to get used to".

I actually like how the pulley menu looks, but I agree about the slow selection animation - it just seems unnecessary to me as I know what I just selected.

I like the look of it also, but the animation should not delay the selected function; it is ok to notify user of the selection, but the delay is unnecessary

I agree about the slowliness.

I made a patch that fixes this: Faster Pulley Menus

If you're talking about the slowness of selecting something, read the release notes, it's mentioned as a known issue that will be solved in the next update.

The blink-blink indication of the selection made should be removed, it's simple an unnecessary delay. But my main concern was the awful appearance, that's IMHO not "simple, beautiful and uncluttered" as advertised in Design principles (https://sailfishos.org/design/design-principles/). The earlier was.

Just updated to 1.1.9.28. Can't say I don't like the new menus, but what hits my eyes first is a strong controversy between the "oldstyle" "pixelated" dots and lines (in settings and "swipe back" indicator) and the new "flat" menus. Seems like disigners had not enough time to work on it, like they made a preliminary draft, which then was put into UI by some developer, with everybody forgetting it still needs a lot of work on it. (As a designer myself, I know it may happen sometimes… ))) )

That's my feeling as well. Not about the draft (even if that might be true), but the difference between the different UI elements. Some elements, like check boxes and lines have the old style, while pulley have another (flat) and then the notification toasters have a third style (rounded).

@Mohjive Yes, and notifications too! Had not seen them yet when wrote my answer.

Completely agree.

But I also think they did a huge mistake by changing the way to swipe out notifications, lock, mute etc... No one sane would change the Human Interface of an OS people are used to. Apple do that from time to time but only by epsilon. Here a quarter of gesture controls have been changed for no reason, people never asked for that. On the contrary, too few of the wanted features have been implemented, like XMPP still does no support encryption; and it would have cost nothing to add options to revert to old style as well. So they got it wrong from A to Y [from Y to Z it is actually better :)] With all the fuzz they have done, like look guys we have been working so hard in the past year, and the stuff coming out, that scares me for the future. I wonder weather if they are the same people having thought Sailfish 1 and Sailfish 2, that cannot be !?

I agree. Majority of changes in 2.0 make using the Jolla phone needlessly more complicated and without any obvious benefits for phone users. I think Jolla should...

  • Allow people to lock the phone by swiping from top to bottom in running apps view like in Sailfish 1.x. It's faster and simper action than pulling out a menu and then tapping an out of place "lock Ambience" among "actual" Ambiances.
  • Allow people to see notifications by swiping bottom up. It's more important than seeing installed applications.
  • Allow people to switch Ambiances by swiping left/right like in Sailfish 1.x.
  • Allow people to see all installed applications by swiping left/right instead of swiping bottom to up. Sailfish 2.x applications list is out of place.
  • Allow people to swipe the application covers like in Sailfish 1.x instead of pushing the damn small icons in those covers. Which probably creates a conflict usability-wise with the applications page and ambiances pages in home screen. But it can be avoided allowing users to press&hold&swipe actions for covers.
  • Allow people to open the locked phone by swiping from bottom to top like in Sailfish 1.x

By the way:

  • The new pulley menu theme is broken. And the new pulley menu itself is now broken and occasionally detaches itself from top of the screen.
  • 2.x has no indication that notification page has a pulley menu but it does have one.
  • There still isn't a way to browse long lists.
  • Media Player is still really weird.
  • Cropping new Ambiances in Gallery from images results wrong kind of Ambiance image portions for the Jolla phone. It only does tablet aspect ratio instead of the phone.
  • There's too much stuff in a lock screen... A pulley menu, media player controls, swipe left and right to open which can be made more complicated by using a device lock.
  • When Jolla phone is sideways the notifications are facing wrong. (Especially when always show notifications from left swipe has been enabled from settings.)

Thanks!

I agree and installed my first patch just to get back to the previous state. Apart from that 1.1.9.287 has been great so far for me.
