Many of my contacts use an avatar that doesn't depict them, but contain a picture from a movie or an album instead, and some of these people change their avatars often.

This means that I can't put such people among my favourites because their names are not written there, just the avatars - and I don't recognize their avatars.

There really isn't enough room to show both avatar and name in the favorite contacts area. If you would prefer to see the name rather than the avatar, however, you can click on the avatar in a person's contact card, and select 'Remove avatar'. After that, the person's name will show in the favorite grid, rather than their avatar.

How about showing it with an animation, similarly to how Windows Phone does it in its people hub?

@Venemo: I haven't seen the WP version, but it sounds like a good idea. I will get some advice from our design group. Thanks!

@MattVogt I specifically mean the way it's done in the "recent" tab or the group view of the WP people hub. Basically, the name of the person perodically hovers over the avatar and then goes away; all with a nice animation. See 02:47 and 5:12 in this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o-kuMvTFoRQ

@MattVogt the animation is very subtle so you might not notice it at first glance.
