I recently installed microG (free implementation of google services API) on my Jolla and at least one application (documentos) is able to work with it. the ability to use microG can be a big progress in the competability of Jolla to the Android ecosystem, even more then the original google play services, since microG is free and therefor relatively spy-clean. helping to create a fully functional port of this project to SailfishOS seems to me as valuable effort for Jolla development team.

What an awesome dicovery you provide here. Did you compile the components youself? I joust found this after a very short search. I am excited to try this stuff, so maybe the miBand app can run on the older android version of the Jolla phone.

I didn't compile it myself. I used the built apk in http://android.brn.li/apps/GmsCore/Latest/ see https://github.com/microg/android_packages_apps_GmsCore/issues/10

Thank you sooo much! I'll give it a try.

use the debug apk, the release is unsigned so it fails to install

I just bought the Xperia X and naturally installed Sailfish on it, to run Android apps. I pulled the apps off of apk-dl.com. Much to my dismay, the apps seem to more or less all require Google Services.

I remembered that MicroG exists, and looked it up, to find https://github.com/microg/android_packages_apps_GmsCore/wiki/Installation - and eventually their F-Droid repository at https://microg.org/fdroid.html so yay :)

Installing F-Droid was trivial, just install it, and adding the repository was pretty much as easy. Then I installed the MicroG apps in the preferred order and used FakeStore as the Play Store equivalent.

For installing apps, I got Yalp Store, as some apps (looking at you, Nordea) aren't published outside Google. Also sort of sucks the Nordea Code app complains about having been "rooted/jailbroken" and won't run.

As a last note, I booted the phone to see if I get UnifiedNlp for location support working. I have no idea if any of this "really works", but after the reboot, software started working. It may be that it worked earlier. Most interestingly, I installed Skype before MicroG and it started fine, but now it complains it needs Google.

The software I've used so far seem to all complain about their need for Google, but they seem to work better now.

It could be that I didn't investigate this deeply enough, I may have missed and/or misunderstood anything along the way, so don't consider this scientifically accurate.

Hope this was helpful to someone and if you don't get some apps to work, but fix them with F-Droid and MicroG, please holler in the comments and we can all become wiser about these things :)

All apps must be installed (or reinstalled/updated) AFTER microG.

How has the MicroG worked for you? Is it really that easy to install nowadays? If great and yes, I might give it a go...

I can confirm that microG works on latest Jolla (2.0.0.10) for GCM (Google Cloud Messaging) using a patched version of the official Signal (TextSecure) which suppresses the "Google Services not installed" error and using the "Push Notification Tester" app on Google Play.

Where can one get that patched version from?

It doesn't detect Google Play Services only if you don't patch the framework.jar to enable signature spoofing (look for Tingle), after patching it should work out of the box.

@AnaT: See my posting at https://together.jolla.com/question/122098/signal-message-and-call-encryption-app/?answer=123371#post-id-123371 which contains a README how to patch and a patched version (although it is outdated by now)

You can find informations for installing it here: https://together.jolla.com/question/138213/make-installation-of-free-play-services-ug-easy-and-safe/?answer=143567#post-id-143567

Now the release is signed, so you don't need the debug version.

I have installed on my Jolla according to the instructions in the xda forum.

Then have the APPS microg services and notifications test app activated in the background services.

The app then sends test by pressing the corresponding specifications a test push message!

After reinstallation of the eBay Classifieds / ebay app I get now for notifications which if someone writes. really cool...

But sometimes no messages will arrive. Hmmmpf..

So I was able to isolate the problem, there are practical problems with moving network (WLAN for mobile data and opposit. Test: If you send a push message Tets after switching it works It then switches from WLAN to mobile data, or the opposite>> No push message

When you start the Home screen as a new ... with the Sailfish Utilities and sends a new test Push message does this also.

For sound and led the apps you must edit the androidnotificationspriorities.

I had already posted the same discovery here: https://together.jolla.com/question/114617/microg-gmscore-floss-play-servicesa-compatible-framework/ but it appear that it isn't compatible with the current android version on the Jolla phone. In my brief test I wasn't able to use it neither on the phone and on the tablet, at least with the few apps that interest me. @yorambh what you have tested so far? how you installed the apk?

I successfully run (google) "drive" and "docs" applications. I use apk of microG from http://android.brn.li/apps/GmsCore/Latest/

yorambh ( 2015-11-04 12:24:46 +0200 )edit

Have you just installed it? or manually copied somewhere?

netvandal ( 2015-11-04 13:28:33 +0200 )edit

Just installed it.

yorambh ( 2015-11-04 13:36:41 +0200 )edit

I installed the debug core package plus the GsfProxy package and afterwards the GCM test application which is mentioned in the microG forum thread. The test application works, but Signal refuses to register without Google Play Services...

fungs ( 2015-11-28 16:19:27 +0200 )edit

@fungs could you fix the Signal registration issue?
