Jolla should introduce subscription plans for regularly updated Sailfish ports incl. services, support & warranties to end-users.

At the bottom-line device selection is left open to the end-user / developer and jolla concentrates on reliable Sailfish OS ports only. No more #tabletgate(s). Subscription plans aside licensing partnerships also bring manufacturer/operator independent ports to developers & users leaving out non-neutral adaptations, settings & apps.

Subscription plans could cover :

• device generations - e.g. 1 - n generations

• years - e.g. 1 - n years

• combos - e.g. SFOS-promotional phone / tablet combos

( IMEI-based ?) volume limitations - e.g. max.10 devices / generation / n years for personal/family use.

A target mix could consist of :

• solid-built series - e.g. "Galaxy" series from Samsung or "ME" series from Gigaset ( European player )

• performant series - e.g. "Flagship" series from OnePlus

• experimental series - e.g. "PuzzlePhone" or "Fairphone" devices

• mid-range / budget series could remain subject to hi-volume manufacturer-licensing agreements.

Ready-made, warranty / update covered ports & devices could be made available from the jolla shop or optionally by officially licensed Sailfish partners. Device flashing / warranty issues handled by jolla.

Crucially all device-typical chipsets, interfaces & I/O devices such as (specific) camera functionality, Bluetooth & WLAN connectivity, dual SIM support, card-drives, etc. would need to work out of the box.

Community subscriptions / experimental ports will remain free for testing, development & trying. As usual no warranties.

A way has to be found to reward / motivate community-based developers contributing to official releases. Not every app / solution has to be produced twice to become an official jolla app ....

That's an interesting idea.

SailfishOS has been ported to many devices: https://wiki.merproject.org/wiki/Adaptations/libhybris

The best thing Jolla can do is to take advantage of this. Jolla could sell a license if you have an Android phone or tablet yourself and want it to run SailfishOS including proprietary Android app support for a certain price.

I'd support this. Happy to get an old phone or tablet to put a paid version of SFOS on. I can see a lot of whining though, from people who just want more..

@kaktux .... to cut it short : jolla's sailing but there must be feedback about the weather they are sailing in - what else would be the purpose of maintaining a community ?

I would be interested in this. I hope the Fairphone will be the next device if not, Jolla should really put a new device for the European market in stores soon. 2 Years with the J1 is way to long.
