Hello!

Please write all port requests here as answers, and see how many upvotes we can get, to guide our great community porters, current and future ones. Remember to tick the "community wiki" box! Thanks!

Before you do, check maybe someone's already on it:
https://wiki.merproject.org/wiki/Adaptations/libhybris
https://wiki.merproject.org/wiki/Adaptations/libhybris/porters

Passive (old) ports are also welcome to appear down here, so they can get picked up and worked on again, seeing that there's interest! Feel free to comment under each answer, if port has definite blockers (locked bootloader etc), but other stalled ports can be resurrected

@JSE, aggregating choices to one vote-able answer biases the poll and might even conceal the intended outcome. We should rather split them to one answer each.

lakutalo ( 2016-02-01 16:21:36 +0300 )edit

Agreed, only one device per answer, and let's not put specs as answers - increases complexity. If you want e.g. 8-10" range, check back regularly and upvote matching answers

Turn this into a wiki and add the suggested devices to the main post so people wont duplicate th entries so much.

But we won't know their upvotes nor respective discussions, also a maintenance nightmare

FAIRPHONE 3

Fairphone 3 has been announced. Please, try building a port so that Jolla considers making an official release. For reference:

Really hope this is coming. Free Hardware and Free Software. Everything we need.

From the FAQ of the FP3-homepage:

Soon, you will have the option to install an alternative operating system such as Ubuntu Touch, Lineage OS, Sailfish OS or e-foundation. These communities will also first need to port their Operating Systems on Fairphone 3. To do this, you will need to unlock the bootloader. All Fairphone 3’s are shipped with the bootloader locked, this is to ensure an attacker cannot compromise the device by installing their own system or boot image. We plan to publish a step-by-step guide to unlocking your Fairphone 3 bootloader in the coming weeks.

Any news on a community port of Sailfish OS for FP3? Anyone?

Fairphone 3 with Sailfish would really tackle the problem of planned obsolescence for me!

Nokia N9

I love the N9 form factor and large screen to body ratio. Why do all modern smart phones have to have screens larger than 4.3"? Most modern smart phones leave a lot to be desired when considering ergonomics. Even the Jolla phone is slightly too large to comfortably use in one hand for any length of time.

N9 has already been ported on, will wait for adaptation repository to stabilize enough to a point where it is possible again.

My wife and I have N9 too. I bought recently Intex AquaFish. I would love to see Sailfish on N9 as well, though Sailfish should catch up with some features N9 offers.

I support you. The Moto G1 is very cheap and not bad phone. I believe SFOS would fit it pretty well. There is only one problem - the battery, but I think for SfOS it's not a problem. In any case, I would be happy to install SFOS to Moto G

mariano ( 2016-02-11 14:59:21 +0300 )edit

Yep. Actually any Xperia Compact phone would be fine — these phones made pretty well, mostly use decent components and would work very nice with gesture-based OS since they're not really big by modern standards (whilst in their full-size phones one can fully appreciate the drawbacks of large margins and square angles). And they've got Scandinavian design too)

I actually wonder what happened meanwhile to the SFOS PP. I haven't heard anything about it lately

November 27th, 2015 I received this reply :
"Thank-you for your interest in the PuzzlePhone. The Community supported Sailfish OS integration in PuzzlePhone project is ongoing as planned. The Jolla circumstances are not affecting this project and will not affect it in the future. We cannot disclose more details at this moment about the support for Operating Systems other than Android in the PuzzlePhone, but will do when time comes. From our point of view the financial issues that Jolla has in this moment are not affecting our Saifish OS integration, neither other OS integration, with PuzzlePhone. The real device test will start when the first production samples/prototypes become available early in Spring 2016. The answer for the "Brain" having all the storage is the simplicity. If you move storage out of the Brain you need another module, or integrate it in the Spine or the Heart. Our design decisions are based in long term simplicity and ease to use. Also minded for reuse of the modules in other applications. Also, for some OS the capability to install apps and OS in an external storage device are severely limited, or even impossible. Your suggestion can definitely be implemented as part of a custom Heart module using the Piece Maker. Do not hesitate to contact us for any further question."

December 18th I asked :
"with the great news regarding the securing jolla’s financial future & Sailfish OS development just arriving – would you consider extending your IGG campaign over Xmas ?

I’m sure many jolla supporters were awaiting the moment both jolla’s future and the availability of a more powerful and versatile successor of the jolla phone Mk.1 ...

Maybe leave a tweet @JollaHQ on twitter to post the community :)"

... but didn't receive any further reply / comment.

Just to re-iterate, this question is not about port requests that Jolla would do, it's all about community. Jolla is already busy, if you followed latest news ;) So let's do it together! And hopefully the ways of at least partly "officialising" a community's port will come to fruition over time

sledges ( 2016-02-04 01:59:04 +0300 )edit

Hi @sledges, what had been those latest news ? Any link ? Thanks, highly appreciated !

launchpad ( 2016-02-04 02:06:37 +0300 )edit

@sledges .... I see - is that TuringPhone actually likely to become a reality at all ? Two media releases explicitly suggest to try a bail out if you have been funding something on that project ....
