With the proposed set of new strings to translate into French, I could find several instances of "Data costs may apply" (by the way the English seems inconsistent as I could find 'data cost' in singular and 'data costs' in plural) which is quite generic.

I could see different proposals:

  • Ceci peut entraîner des coûts de données.

  • Des données peuvent être facturées.

  • Des frais de données peuvent être appliqués. [seems to be the official Jolla translation, see Here section]

None of these satisfies me (but maybe a personal taste) and for instance the current official translation seems to be a word-to-word translation, and it sounds weird to me (seems to be used in Canada though). So I wanted to add other possibilities :P

  • L'utilisation de données mobiles peut entraîner des frais supplémentaires.
  • Des frais d'utilisation de données sont applicables.

Any views?

I like much your first proposal that doesn't look like direct translation. I vote for.

Hi, Thanks for opening a discussion on a lingustic issue. There are others in French as well, but will come back to them later. I checked the occurrences of "data cost" vs. "data costs", and we only use the plural from in the localised English. The Engineering English may have also in singular, but it's not used as a basis for translations.

In (British) English, I would prefer "data charges may apply".

The third proposal is the best. It closes to other OS translation (like Windows / Xbox, Linux, Android...), short enough and the most clear.

Noticed that: when you translate a software, you should avoid to suggest translation 30% longer than the original sentence. Else, the translated sentence could be partially not displayed or could broke the design.

What about: L'usage de données mobiles peut entraîner un surcoût.

What about "Des frais de transmission de données peuvent s'appliquer." ?

tl;dr :P

Joke aside, for some sentences, we would need to have more context (a screenshot or the source code), to know what we can do, if it needs to be succinct or not.

@Sthocs, sorry to contact you like that, but I didn't find any other means. In the jolla-calculator latest translation about the scientific mode, I think you may have wanted to say « paysage » instead of « portrait » in your translation, may you not ?

That's right, I've seen my mistake right after submitting it, but I don't know how to update it :/

I've tried re-submitting the correct version but it doesn't work. Time to read the doc maybe ^^.

Can't find how to correct it. I see that it has been reviewed by @jahonen, that's maybe why I can't change it anymore?

Hi, Please make a new suggestion if it allows you to. It will reviewed then again
