LTE with Jolla C [released]

asked 2016-06-29 11:08:53 +0300

updated 2016-09-22 10:44:34 +0300

Edit 21.09.2016 Re-opened this question, because of the following observations:

1. No 4G @ home anymore

While LTE worked quite well after the 2.0.2.51 update, a few days after the update I came across a bug (?), which prevents the Jolla C to connect to LTE (800MHz) at home. The first time this happened, my Jolla C showed 4G and some hours later it showed 2G without doing anything.

Nothing worked to get a 4G connection again: Reboot the device, boot without SIM inserted and boot again with SIM inserted, switch from SIM slot 1 to 2 and back, setting network mode from 'Prefer 4G' to any other option and back, disable mobile data connection, restart network connections via Utilities ...

The only thing that worked was to leave the cell (drive to another region). After I came home again, 4G worked correctly.

After that 4G worked well a few days/weeks, but since a week or two, my Jolla C completely refuses to connect 4G again. I tried everything again, but nothing helps.

My GFs Jolla C with the same OS version works just fine with 4G with the same provider. In other regions where 4G didn't work correctly (i.e. at work) before the update, my Jolla C still connects to 4G.

Update 22.09.2016: After fiddling around with the more network modes patch from @coderus (installing, uninstalling, reinstalling ofono package), my Jolla C connected via 4G again @ home yesterday. Let's see how it behaves the next days/weeks...

2. Slow switching from 2G/3G over to 4G / refusing to switch over after reboot

Jolla C is connected via 4G with good reception. After rebooting the phone, Jolla C refuses to connect via 4G and just stays at 2G or 3G. After some time (and maybe cell switching), it connects via 4G.

3. General

For testing, I installed the more network modes patch from @coderus. As soon as I select the option "4G" (only), the network switches it's state from "Telekom.de" to "Searching..." and never ever switches back. When I select "4G+3G", the network switches to "Telekom.de" directly without problems, but connects only via 3G.

I need to mention, that I have a very good 4G reception in my work place and at home, so I can clearly say that a "4G dead zone" can not be the problem.

I know the 4G band @ home is 20 (800MHz) and I think @ work it is band 20, too - but I can not clearly say that.

Original question:

Hello,

as we came back to Germany from our vacation from Helsinki, I noticed that the Jolla C does not want to connect via LTE in our region. Jolla Phone (Jolla 1) has no problems to connect via LTE here.

I checked the specs and compared them to the Jolla 1 and it seems, that the Jolla C should support all the LTE bands the Jolla 1 supports plus band 1.

Unfortunately I don't know the LTE band used in our region, but I think it is band 20 (800MHz) as we live in a small village.

Is the spec sheet of Jolla C wrong, or is it a bug in Sailfish OS?

Edit 19.07.2016:

Intex itself specifies the LTE bands 2300, 1800 and 850 on their site: http://www.intex.in/mobile/smartphone/aqua-fish/specifications.html

So it seems that your spec sheet is wrong. If this is true it would be a real PITA because 90% of time I only have the 800MHz band and almost never 3G.

Hi ho, which provider do you use? Did you try one of the others too? AFAIK because of O2 buying E-Plus, there is a lot of fluctuation in frequency use going on at least for this provider.

I am/we are using Telekom.de - so this should be no problem :)

I can confirm this. T-Mobile around Munich/Augsburg works fine for me, but T-Mobile in Passau-Auerbach does not work. The Jolla C sees no LTE there.

Hmm, this will be interesting. I live in Zuerich/Switzerland but am often in Germany, being it for holidays or just a hop over the border for shopping. However, I will only receive my Jolla C in August, when I'm back from an extended trip around Scandinavia.

I also have the same problem with 800Mhz in Sweden, provider Tele2. Would be happy if someone could clarify if the specifications of Jolla C is correct or if it is related to software or some certifications with the providers. My Jolla 1 has no problems with the same SIM.

Hi. Just tried this morning and it refused to connect to 4G in the first place, but later the device got registered. PDP Context activation worked ok as well......

I am using operator ES- Movistar in Spain.

Regards.

I am living close to Nuremberg and the Jolla C is most of the time on 2G. According to the fact my provider is Congstar it should at least work/connect to 3G.

Yes, one of my E-Plus sims also only works on 2G only, not even 3G.

Have you checked that APN is the correct one? Settings->Mobile Network->Data access point.

(maybe too obvious but I ask anyway)

yes I did. mobile network is working (2G and 3G) just no access to 4G

APN is correct. In rural areas where 800 MHz is used, Jolla C does not connect to 4G. Now I am in a large city, where 1200 MHz is used, 4G on Jolla C is available.

I find it interesting that in my home network, o2, in Munich I have no LTE network (with J1 I do). I am actually in Spain, roaming with Movistar, and I do have 4G.

Unfortunately I do not know which Frequency Band uses Movistar...and at the moment I can't check.

I just duckduckgo'ed and came up with this page citing Movistar Spain LTE running on B3 1800+ MHz and B7 2600 MHz, and O2 Germany on B20 800MHz.

Maps out well to Jolla C currently not utilizing the 800MHz bands but LTE in general (other bands) working fine.

With O2 in Frankfurt, Germany I had everywhere LTE, now its gone completly due to non-utilization of 800Mhz

4G Sweden provider Hallon (tre), not working at all.
I spent half a day chasing 4G connection in Sweden's second biggest town with no success. Then I went home using E4 highway (allways work with Jolla1), still no 4G connection.

I noticed 4G connection in Göteborg but not in the suburb Mölnlycke where I mostly get 2G and sometimes no Internet connection at all. I'm running 2.0.2.45 on Aqua Fish.

I just got 2.0.2.51 and still seem to be unable to connect to 4G on 800MHz (Orange SK). Any idea what to do? Jolla phone connects to 4G without any problem in this location with the same SIM :(

edit: ok i found out that in SIM slot 2 4G works as is should. When the same card in in slot 1 it only connects to 3G. (same SIM, same location). Guys any idea how to fix this? (note than then i first tested Jolla C after I got it I only put the sim in slot 1 and never in slot 2 (again this is always the same sim and same network) so I suspect maybe this has something to do with it). Any help is much appreciated!

edit2: to anyone wondering i just tried another SIM from the same carrier and it behaves the same way - 3G on slot 1 and 4G in slot 2. please help!

Latest fix for the issue of "Some LTE bands not working with Jolla C" released in 2.0.4.14. Please verify and report.

Comments

After the update to 2.0.4.14 rather frequent 4G issues appear, the phone connects to 4G, but the connection is not working, and under the Settings | Mobile data | Carrier connection the status is reported as “Limited connectivity”, after switching to 3G it works, and after couple of minutes reliable connection with 3G switching back to 4G it then works. In the described way 4G sometimes refuses to work after the mobile data is started anew, or after 4G tries to resume after the phone call.

Other bugs in previous releases, when the 4G connection issues used to break all gsm connection and even Phone and messaging seems have been fixed.

Phone Jolla C
