I'm thinking of getting the Reliance Jio sim as well. Need to know if it would work fine with Aqua Fish or I'd need to buy a cheap LYF or something.

@utkarsh pls check and let us know

Latest version of the app is working for me. Clear the data of the app and restart your phone.

@bhavin192 - The app installs and opens on my Jolla 1 phone too, but it doesn't recognize the Jio sim on it. Let us know if the app recognizes the Jio sim on the Aqua Fish and you are able to make calls on it.

The MyJio app wont run bcoz Intex AquaFish has no VoLTE support. This means that you cant launch the myjio app, make calls with the aquafish using a JioSIM but hey, you can still use the net ;) you just need a VoLTE enabled phone to activate your JioSIM, use a friend's phone for activating your JioSIM and be sure to check the list of phones which support VoLTE on Jio's Website under updated list of Welcome Offer. Hope that helps.

* Yes and No.*

Since Intex Aquafish supports 4G LTE, Jio DATA services will work fine and you should get 4g speeds using it. But since Sailfish OS doesn't support VoLTE (Voice over LTE) yet, one cannot FULLY ACTIVATE all Jio services using an Intex Aqua Fish or Jolla 1 phone and will not be able to use voice services on it.

According to Reliance Jio support, VoLTE feature on 4g phone is a must for FULL activation.

So once you get a Jio sim and verification SMS, go to the Reliance digital store or use your friends 4g VoLTE phone to call Reliance Jio (1977 using your Jio sim) to do FULL ACTIVATION (voice and data) for your connection.

The Jio sim packaging mentions that you can also call 1800 890 1977 (from any number) to activate only the 4g data service. That is, if your phone doesn't support VoLTE, you can call the above number using your non-VoLTE phone or landline and do a partial activation of Jio data service only (voice call service will not be enabled).

Once the Jio sim is activated re-insert it back in your Aqua Fish phone and:

  1. Go to Settings > Mobile network
  2. Tap 'Network mode' and select 'Prefer 4g'.
  3. Once the phone switches to 4g and is able to connect to a Jio tower, you will receive the following SMS.

Dear Customer,
To start using Jio data services, please configure APN by going to Settings -> Cellular Networks -> Access Point -> Create NEW APN -> Under APN Type: Jionet -> Save -> Make this the default APN. Thank you.
Team Jio

Of course, this instruction is for Android phones.

To do the same on Sailfish:

  1. Go to Settings > Mobile network
  2. Tap and hold the mobile data switch (right under Mobile Data) and select Edit.
  3. Type Jionet in both 'Connection Name' and 'Access point name' text fields.
  4. In the same view, tap Protocol and select Dual.
  5. Swipe back.
  6. Restart your phone.

(If you have installed Sailfish Utilities from the Jolla store, instead of restarting the phone go to Settings > Utilities and tap on the Restart network connections button).

Wait for a few minutes for the phone to register with the Jio network and then enable mobile data.

image description image description

When I enabled data and tried to browse, it kept redirecting me to a Jio webpage to recharge my credit (as shown above in the 2nd shot). Jio customer support later confirmed that JioFi sim will only work on the MiFi device.

IMPORTANT NOTE: If you got your Jio SIM with the JioFi MiFi device, that sim will only work on the JioFi device and NOT on your phone.

As pointed out by @bhavin192 you can also activate a Jio sim using the Jio Join app Jio4gVoice. The Jio4gVoice app claims to add VoLTE feature to non VoLTE 4g phones.

So if you can successfully install and run that app on your Intex Aqua Fish / Jolla 1 phone, it can be used as an alternative method to fully activate ALL Jio services.

Update (21 May 2017): The latest version of Jio4gVoice android app (version 4.1.3) installed successfully on my Sailfish OS 2.1.0.11. It also runs fine and is now able to detect my JioFi device and was successfully able to authenticate it. As such, I was able to make voice call and video calls successfully with it. As stated below, you still have to allow android app access to your contacts for the Jio4gVoice app to run successfully.

Note: I have a JioFi device, and don't use the Jio sim on the phone. I have only tested the app with the JioFi device.

Note that the following below were done on my Jolla 1 phone and NOT Intex Aqua Fish. Intex Aqua Fish users may get a different result.

Update: The Jio4gVoice app - the latest update to the older Jio Join app - installs fine but will keep crashing unless you allow it access to your 'contacts'. (To allow android app to access your contact, go to Settings > Android Support and enable Allow Android apps to access your contacts. Note that ALL android apps will be able to access your contacts!)

As a test, I tried activating my friend's Jio sim on my Jolla 1 (NOT Intex Aqua Fish) using the Jio Join app (which I downloaded from a third-party site). The app installed successfully and also opened without any error. But it couldn't recognize the Jio SIM and thus didn't work.

image description image description

We also tried the second option - putting the sim into a MiFi device (JioFi) and then connecting the phone to the device by Wifi. But, as shown in the second screenshot above, the app still didn't work and gave an error.

Note: I have disabled the option to allow android apps to access my contacts list. This could be the reason why the Jio Join app doesn't work properly. As I am not interested in allowing android apps to access my contacts, I won't be doing further tests and using this app. Perhaps someone else can chime in with their experience?

It is possible to activate SIM on non VoLTE phone, using JioJoin app. I have done it on Lenovo K5. JioJoin app seems to be working on Aqua Fish. Will try it once I get SIM

@bhavin192 - Thanks for the additional clarification. I have updated my post with more info.

@bhavin192 - Can you try installing and running Jio4gVoice (the latest update of Jio Join app which has also been renamed) on your Aqua Fish? It installed fine for me but doesn't run / open on my Jolla 1.

sifartech ( 2016-09-08 22:46:33 +0300 )edit

@bhavin192 hi bhavin, did you try? if yes, could you confirm?

@sifartech hi could you tell what to do if the data connection wouldn't enable?

http://techpp.com/2017/07/13/reliance-jio-4g-volte-feature-phone a 10$ feature phone having kaiOS ( based on firefox OS) supports volte and vowifi .It also has a voice assisstant in lt. But still SailfishOs dont have emerging features on their roadmap.

They have not provide viop support mentioned in their roadmap forget about volte. This os only alive due to its loyal community support which I suppose itself self shrinking.

their Ignorance to these issues wont encourage me to buy another SailfishOs phone neither anybody else in India as Volte is aggressive adapted by all carriers.

p_pahare ( 2017-07-15 10:13:14 +0300 )edit

true every carrier is moving toward VoLTE. But they dont get it . Firefox os fork got exposure to more than 100 million subscriber base of jio. This bussiness oppurtunity should have been grabbed by the jolla. But they just dont get this. They working hard to port sailfish to older devices.

DC ( 2017-07-15 10:35:17 +0300 )edit

lets face it, sailfish os is of no use, its just junk to all the Indians because it doesnot support volte, some of us are facing reboots but nothing been really done by jolla which makes it equal to garbage, lack of core functionality makes it dumber than feature phones, sim support in sim slots is unknown, some sim cards works only in slot 1 and some in slot 2. but i am back on "the beast" (n*kia n900), good luck to you my friends, its time to leave sailfish.

hardy_magnus ( 2017-07-15 13:34:37 +0300 )edit

+1 At this point of time, Only Android Support is worth in it otherwise frequent reboots makes it totally crap. I will try this feature phone as an Volte supplement also for having an experience with this firefox fork os (kaiOS) , rumours are there that it can run whatsapp .

Tried and tested. Jio sim works on aquafish. Latches on to the signal and data works as expected. Jio join doesn't recognize the sim on the device. So no VoLTE calls tested.

@ I think this no VOLTE calls are possible is because the android app do not have permissions or some sort of thing. This can be solved by allowing the android apps access to the SIM in Sailfish

dillihifi ( 2016-09-10 04:10:21 +0300 )edit

AFAIK I gave all the permissions for jio4voice to access my contacts, still it doesn't detect the sim for voice calls through the app.

vidhun91 ( 2016-09-10 08:48:17 +0300 )edit

What to do if shows connection disabled in Internet Connection even though 4G signal comes?

pinkpanther ( 2016-09-17 09:30:21 +0300 )edit

Have you tried manually editing the data access point to Jionet under mobile network>Data access point and selecting the protocol as dual?

vidhun91 ( 2016-09-17 13:49:26 +0300 )edit

yeah..I tried that...

After updating to Fiskarsinjoki Early Access, the JIO Hotspot is working fine with the Intex Aquafish! Could make calls to regular phone numbers.

But a minor bug: The "Add Contact Button in the app" fails to load the contact of the phone and it crashed the app every time it's initiated.

The OS is refusing to grant access to the contacts (People) for the Jio4GVoice!

Did you enable Android apps to access contacts (Settings -> Android support)?

Though I am not sure but I am guessing that it will support Jio n/w as it is running on primarily on 2300 Mhz which is present in the Aquafish.

Intex Aqua Fish supports all spectrum used in India. So Jio network will definitely be supported on it.

I don't think its mandatory to download MyJio app to use JIO services as the network is open to all from SEP5...wait till sep5 if MyJio app is not working...
