What is most great about Jolla device for you? Really the top 2-3 things (okay, 4-5 if you just have to) [not a question]

Jolla device and Sailfish OS contain lots of innovations: some great, some just interesting. Let's figure out which ones really do stand out of the crowd and make your life easier, more convenient or maybe more fun.

What are the things you would show or at least advertise to your friends or even parent (maybe some of these features temporarily don't work great right now, but you are sure how they will work in the end)?

Put your answers to this question, one feature/idea/peculiarity per answer, but really try to stay at as small number as you can (no real limit, but 2-3 ideas ideally). Then the voting will help us understand what stands out real great to the current crowd.

P.S.
Please, put your answers as, well, answers. Use comments, well, to comment about the question (e.g if you think it should be corrected)

P.P.S.
Similar discussion for the worst things in Jolla (there are a few issues, aren't there): https://together.jolla.com/question/15102/what-is-most-embarrassing-in-your-jolla-device-what-makes-you-not-show-it-to-your-friends-if-anything-really-the-top-things-no-minor-issues/

And yes, we should do a couple of polls for actual prioritization for the things mentioned/voted most often

to have it upvote worthy you need to specify answers to be voted on not ask people to list theirs in one answer... do a proper poll

I was more into a discussion for now. Yes, there is value in a proper poll too. Maybe to be organized for the items mentioned most often in this thread. And sure I don't mind if somebody else does it.

While it's a great question - shouldn't such question be asked in another forum? In my opinion together.jolla is here to ask questions about issues/bugs on the system or give the Jolla team an idea what us users wish to have. If everyone starts such "discussions" this place soon will be a clutter...

molan ( 2014-01-15 11:21:28 +0300 )edit

@Artem: Let's agree on putting up a wiki post instead where users with a karma > to 75 can all contribute and others comment so we don't break the karma logic and keep things nicely formatted. Items are already voted upon so if you look by votes you already have a good idea of what must be prioritized... So I close this for now, thanks.

  • Open software "made in Europe", neither from Google, nor from Apple
  • Deterministic system behaviour, unlike Android, which starts processes in the background all the time
  • Linux (with root shell)
  • Gesture based user interface (I am peeking, swiping and double tapping on my Nexus 7 all the time)
  • Simply fu..ing cool

I really like the design of the device. It is simple but pleasing the eye and I can't wait for more colourful other halfs to be available. Oh and changeable battery and SD-card slot! Yay!

And it runs Linux! =:o)

The greatest thing is it has a real Linux. :) And it's completly gesture driven. I also like that it is not related to one of the big data firms like google and so on.

For me, Linux in Jolla is too much crippled "in name of Android" ... :)

SD and SIM-slot you can use while the phone is running and without removing the battery :)

I just noticed, that I wrote this over a year ago. While I had my Jolla in repair, I was using a Samsung Galaxy S5+ which is also a nice phone, hardwarewise. But dear Samsung cluttered the phone with crapware! The poor device!

Now I have my Jolla back and everything I wrote in my initial comment still holds true, even if the hardware specs of the Jolla are a bit dated by now, Sailfish OS still cuts it! A rare gem among the rubble that roam the mobilephone market these days.

-open source
-"together" aspect
-overall usability (especially swipe)

Still in beta mode and waiting for updates, but this phone is beautiful.
I really do wish that after certain improvements on usability the masses also find this device.

When my friends see the Jolla with me and ask about what it is, I usually tell them a few words about Jolla and show them some of the cool stuff that it can do. These are

  • Ambience
  • Gestures (swipe, pull, flick, peek)
  • Multitasking (with app covers)

and everyone loves them. :)

I really like the "cancel in 5 seconds" and swiping from the top to lock.

Gestures + Pulley menus + Remorse timer = Lack of buttons, to sum it up.

The overall elegance in both visuals and usability is what makes it great and the best in my opinion. It shows such a high level of sophistication that the competitors just can't reach due to their fixed way of thinking and history.

the "pulls" can be a bit hard for people to get, but i always show the remorse timer and cover actions.

Both looks cool, and people can "get" how it would be useful.

The fully gesture based and multi-tasking are powerful if you know how & why to use then

I like the way the Jolla lies smoothly in your hand thanks to the TheOtherHalf design. Also, Sailfish gesture is the greates user experience I had on a mobile device to date! Also - for me - the mail application is awesome (minimalistic and funtional). Changeable battery is another great thing nowadays!

  • Like the way multitasking works
  • A lot of small things like the copy/paste feature that is awesome compared to my previous phones. Text selection etc
  • It feels exciting for some reason. All the possibilities that the other half can provide and the fact that it is open source
