Hi folks,

coming from another thread where we discuss patches vs. updates (here), I wanted to start a survey which patches would make sense for upstream? -> Which patches should become part of the SFOS Settings.

There are so many good patches some that really change the usability of SFOS in a great way. So lets collect which are the most famous ones.

For those who need an overview, here are the lists of patches:

TOTALLY aggre ! I just can't understand how Jolla think about updates. They never give settings to the users when new features comes, they only choose for them.

@PatsJolla I woud like to see one survery more: "which patches did you used on jolla OS 1", because it would give all an overview, how use-cases changed, so even Jolla can see how the use of the phone changed after redesign the UI complete. The patch as answer and vote if someone used it. I think there was not so heavy use of patches at all...

I'd like to vote for "Jolla should not add any more choices to the settings". Once it's an official feature, it's behaviour with each of the possible choices needs to be tested for each new software release. I'd rather not have Jolla's limited ressources be spent on this as long as more basic functionality is missing and the intended behaviour can be achieved through patches anyway.

I agree with @ossi1967. That said, some features like swipe to lock were removed for no good reason, because the ambience switcher is completely useless, and it would be good to have these back. I'd just get rid of the ambience switcher altogether, but I'd already be happy with just an option to re-enable swipe to lock.

Of course Jolla keyboard is too simple and needs many options and settings to be implemented/supported.

No home carousel.

This one is great because the events screen is always one swipe away, not more (regardless of which screen is being used), the app switcher is always one swipe away as well, app covers can be closed with a swipe and no long press, and notifications in event view can be closed with a swipe and no long press.

I don't think there is any benefit for the carousel mechanism that loops between screens, so having one side for events and one side for task switcher is more convenient, and actually I believe it used to be like that in first versions of Sailfish OS before partnerspace appeared.

The reason for a carousel (in general) is: "No dead end."
This makes it easier for inexperienced users to find their way around.

Like a couple of other suggestions, IMHO this should rather be optional.

BTW (as I have never tried this Patch), how does it differ from having Settings --> Gestures --> Quick Events access disabled (which is the default, IIRC)?

I wouldn't mind if it was an option, just like the swipe down to close an app.

I cannot use this patch anymore as it has not been updated, so I'm not comfortable commenting too much on the details of how it differs. However, I think one difference from enabling "Quick events access" in the Settings for instance was that you could be in one application (full screen), swipe from the left to show the events, and then when closing them, you would be back on the full screen application instead of the task switcher. With the current option in Settings > Gestures, you cannot go back from Events to an Application directly, even if you were in an application when you showed the events, you have to go through the app switcher first. In my opinion this is confusing, and the patch made it much easier to just sneak at the events without actually leaving the application currently in use. Keeping the current app in focus is key when you consider that the Events view is also the view where you have quick access to settings toggles: let's say you are in the GPS application and need to enable 4G and GPS, you can do that with a quick swipe to events view and then go back immediately to the GPS application; and the same is true to many other situations like connecting to a VPN, locking the orientation, changing the brightness, etc.

Another change with this patch is you could close app covers just by swiping them from the task switcher, you didn't have to long press on them first. I used it all the time, it was very fast and convenient, and there was a visual feedback to it which made it easy to learn even for new users.

Finally, you asked in your message about "disabling" the Quick events access, but then I think it is just totally different. If this option is disabled, a swipe from any side will always bring the task switcher. With the patch, a swipe from the left would always bring events, a swipe from the right would always bring the app switcher. Probably easy to remember because one gesture = one function, system wide.

I didn't find a patch but i think there is one about this feature: Display the mobile network provider at the Home Screen. Very useful when changing countries.

Silicamail

Exchanges the ugly white background in mail app with SFOS style trnasparency. Works for plain text and HTML mails. With this patch the alien looking mail app finally integrates smoothly into SFOS.

I didn't try the already mentioned Silica Jolla Mail, so I don't know the difference.
