What is most embarrassing in your Jolla device? What makes you not show it to your friends if anything? Really the top things, no minor issues [answered]

I am not embarrassed to show Jolla device to my friends, instead I show it and tell them that it is not ready for work or personal use yet. Currently Jolla is a nice open source toy, but I am hoping the platform will develop quickly better so that one can consider it a mobile device.

My problem with Jolla is that platform's core features such as core apps, network stack and security are not ready for serious use. Jolla lacks network stack and security features already Symbian had, e.g. prioritisation/ordering of cellular and WiFi networks, WPA enterprise authentication (UI, certificate handling, various EAP methods), certificate management, configuration provisioning to name some. I know some of these problems are because of the lack of of features in ConnMan connection manager, lack of management UI etc., but it would be nice to know these features are already in the roadmap and will be added to platform for example this year.

Core apps like email, instant messaging, web browser, contact and calendar syncing are not up to other platforms in security or in features either. These however are the apps I would expect to be most ready, usable, feature complete and frankly working on my mobile. Camera and Android compatibility layer are far less important to me. Now those core apps are not ready, missing many features and some actually allow man-in-the-middle security attacks (e.g. allowing all certificates setting in Exchange connector) due to insufficient certificate management.

Jolla is great achievement as it is, but instead of UI, Android compatibility and consumer features I wish more attention would have been directed already from the start to the core platform apps, network stack and security features.

What is holding me back:

• lack of landscape mode anywhere in the system
• lack of responsiveness after 2-3 days of uptime, especially when swiping from lock screen after double tap to wake

I like showing the device, and most people are highliy impressed.

The downside is that i have to warn about the stock apps, especially email and browser not beeing ready for productive use. Relying on Android apps for those basic things really make the nice UI-experience point less. Hope this changes soon.

My 60-year-old mother was unable to answer an incoming call. She had absolutely no experience whatsoever with Jolla (she had come across the name through some media, but that's it). Same with making phonecalls.

To me, that is the single biggest minus with the device and one area where it would be nice if the implementation was comparable to other manufacturers.

Edit: I do realize she's probably not in the target demographic but, come on, being able to make and answer calls without reading a manual should be the core of every device sold as a "phone".

Edit 2: No, that would not, and did not, prevent me from showing the phone to people but it's something that, in my opinion, would warrant some further attention. :)

Nothing in Jolla is embarrassing and I'm proud to have it. Have been spreading the news that it is now available to many, and when the SailfishOS 1.0 is getting closer to become feature-complete it'll be even better, and #unlike the rest..

IMO: this question could be closed, cause all answers that are like this are the correct ones ;)

For most women the device is too big or they do not like the design. I tell it is buggy as the software is in beta stage but most things they wanna do already works. $User is not that about apps... they want an alarm-clock, a browser, whatsapp, facebook, a phone, a mediaplayer and a camera... not even email or twitter or make use of the calendar - apart of the close to unusable mediaplayer it is all there and does not crash that often!

Some people have commented that they're interested, but will hold off purchasing until the operating system is slightly more mature. It seems that the greatest show-stopper is that it's a first-generation device in its infancy. There's nothing that has stopped me showing it to people; I just show and tell them how I feel about the phone (very nice and useful, but still in development, and progressing fast).

I think it's quite natural that the first units get bought by early adopters and technically-minded people who aren't risk-averse. (It was still the fifth most sold smartphone of its primary Finnish retailer DNA in December 2013, and first in its price range. This despite the fact that public sales only started the 11th, and demo units only arrived the following week, AFAIK.)

Put it this way: I bought my Jolla knowing the fact that it's a first-generation device, even if slightly big, square and klunky for my tastes (like all phones these days), and at this time somewhat quirky, eating through battery like a madman and rebooting at random intervals. Then again, this is what all my previous smartphones have been doing, more or less.
