If you've got your Jolla and take part in Together, you probably like your device a lot. There are lots of innovations: some great, some just interesting. Many of them deserve love and being shown to your friends https://together.jolla.com/question/14616/what-is-most-great-about-jolla-device-for-you-really-the-top-2-3-things-okay-4-5-if-you-just-have-to/#post-id-15092

Yet is there something that holds you from sharing the excitement? Anything that makes you not show the device because you might be embarrassed when something fails miserably or something is lacking so severely you can't go around it even on a friends' demo?

Post your opinions as the answers, ideally one issue per answer, yet any format will do.

P.S.
Once we collect the opinions, we'll probably organize a poll on the items mentioned most often or voted most.

Thanks for this question. Apparently it has been downvoted. It is important for Jolla to know which could be the deal breaker for the broad public. Maybe you could rephrase the title to be less offensive to strong Jolla fans, like "Showing Jolla to your friends - what would be their deal braker"

Well, if there is nothing embarrassing, that's great news! :) If there is something and people don't want to hear it.. then it's a bit different though.

It's not about wanting to tell or hear about issues and problems. This whole Together-forum is all about that. IMO this question is not very good to adcance things in the future, cause it's is formulsted as opinioned and biased style. If you truly want to learn what the deal-breakers for some users are, just search this forum the questions with most votes and you get to see same stuff you are collecting here.

Essentially this question duplicates most of the content in this forum, and is counter-productive cause it don't provide answers to identified problems and issues.

@jjaone, I think your latest posts are a bit overeager.

I am not embarrassed to show Jolla device to my friends, instead I show it and tell them that it is not ready for work or personal use yet. Currently Jolla is a nice open source toy, but I am hoping the platform will develop quickly better so that one can consider it a mobile device.

My problem with Jolla is that platform's core features such as core apps, network stack and security are not ready for serious use. Jolla lacks network stack and security features already Symbian had, e.g. prioritisation/ordering of cellular and WiFi networks, WPA enterprise authentication (UI, certificate handling, various EAP methods), certificate management, configuration provisioning to name some. I know some of these problems are because of the lack of of features in ConnMan connection manager, lack of management UI etc., but it would be nice to know these features are already in the roadmap and will be added to platform for example this year.

Core apps like email, instant messaging, web browser, contact and calendar syncing are not up to other platforms in security or in features either. These however are the apps I would expect to be most ready, usable, feature complete and frankly working on my mobile. Camera and Android compatibility layer are far less important to me. Now those core apps are not ready, missing many features and some actually allow man-in-the-middle security attacks (e.g. allowing all certificates setting in Exchange connector) due to insufficient certificate management.

Jolla is great achievement as it is, but instead of UI, Android compatibility and consumer features I wish more attention would have been directed already from the start to the core platform apps, network stack and security features.

@Artem: honestly, this post does not bring any value as such and more over, using the system for polling is not appropriate as it's not just designed so. The expectation is to have questions where issues are accurately described and broken down to a single one per post, allowing the answering part to properly happen. I'd recommend that you identify clearly which are the issues you, as a user, find the most annoying, make sure they are already reported here and vote up so we get an overall understanding of what needs to be improved. If you have ideas on how the device could be improved, with new software or hardware features, just proceed similarly, and cast a vote on what you think is good so we all share a common understanding.

So please, let's align on what together.jolla.com does best and fully utilize that. Single item per question with votes showing the actual importance, comments refining what the issue is really about, answers that are also voted and eventually accepted so the question is closed.

Thanks for your understanding!

So based on votes, most important feature for Jolla would be: "Differentiate native SailfishOS and Android apps in Jolla store"?

Karri Huhtanen ( 2014-01-15 16:24:26 +0300 )edit

@Karri Huhtanen in the store feature-request category, yes. The community says so and it's useful feedback for Jolla to implement it...

That question has been there quite long so the absolute vote number is nor always best indicator to evaluate importance, thus other metrics can be taken in account too, like.the ratio of views / votes, number of Answers with lots of votes, and combining this to the tags used and (sub)system or app refered to you start to get.a very detailed picture of what.the community thinks arr gravest short-comings or supported enhancements. Combine to this the questions with 'roadmap' tag and you even get a hint of what to expect from the future upgrades ;)

foss4ever ( 2014-01-15 18:22:16 +0300 )edit

I had an idea that together is precisely the right place to discuss Jolla related stuff, and not just for StackOverflow style questions-answers. Well, if community thinks differently at least about the "negative" topics, then just discussions may be more appropriate for another places indeed.

What is holding me back:

  • lack of landscape mode anywhere in the system
  • lack of responsiveness after 2-3 days of uptime, especially when swiping from lock screen after double tap to wake

I like showing the device, and most people are highliy impressed.

The downside is that i have to warn about the stock apps, especially email and browser not beeing ready for productive use. Relying on Android apps for those basic things really make the nice UI-experience point less. Hope this changes soon.

My 60-year-old mother was unable to answer an incoming call. She had absolutely no experience whatsoever with Jolla (she had come across the name through some media, but that's it). Same with making phonecalls.

To me, that is the single biggest minus with the device and one area where it would be nice if the implementation was comparable to other manufacturers.

Edit: I do realize she's probably not in the target demographic but, come on, being able to make and answer calls without reading a manual should be the core of every device sold as a "phone".

Edit 2: No, that would not, and did not, prevent me from showing the phone to people but it's something that, in my opinion, would warrant some further attention. :)

@typo Did you know there is check-box called 'minor edit'? Please use it to prevent sending so many alerts for typo-fixes etc.. ;)

foss4ever ( 2014-01-15 13:34:15 +0300 )edit

Yes, I noticed it, but too late, seems like. Apologies, won't happen again. :)

typo ( 2014-01-15 14:26:53 +0300 )edit

No worries, multiple edit alerts are easy enough to clear in Togther inbox without opening each one of them. I also make.a huge amount of typos (because of Jolla.kbd not being optimal for my fingers) and I try to remember to check that minor-edit box when fixing those.. ;)

Nothing in Jolla is embarrassing and I'm proud to have it. Have been spreading the news that it is now available to many, and when the SailfishOS 1.0 is getting closer to become feature-complete it'll be even better, and #unlike the rest..

IMO: this question could be closed, cause all answers that are like this are the correct ones ;)

I like showing the device, and most people are highly impressed.

For most women the device is too big or they do not like the design. I tell it is buggy as the software is in beta stage but most things they wanna do already works. $User is not that about apps... they want an alarm-clock, a browser, whatsapp, facebook, a phone, a mediaplayer and a camera... not even email or twitter or make use of the calendar - apart of the close to unusable mediaplayer it is all there and does not crash that often!

This is the main issue for me too. It's slightly too big. But that's a personal thing. Most people I show the device don't have a problem with the bigness, as their phones are as big or bigger (that's current fashion I don't really like and just accepted it, because it's Jolla ;-) )

As soon as there are other colours for the other half, I am sure the appeal will go up for more people. For instance, a female friend of mine had bought a particular laptop because it was pink and small enough.

1) All my OH ;-)

I hope the exclusive one will arrive soon, because I was talking about it with friends and colleagues, but I can't show it...

2) The store

3) The browser

4) the Maps / GPS app

But I've got other things to show : UI, open source, Android compatibility (even if it is just to show it, because I don't really use it), multitasking, ...

Some people have commented that they're interested, but will hold off purchasing until the operating system is slightly more mature. It seems that the greatest show-stopper is that it's a first-generation device in its infancy. There's nothing that has stopped me showing it to people; I just show and tell them how I feel about the phone (very nice and useful, but still in development, and progressing fast).

I think it's quite natural that the first units get bought by early adopters and technically-minded people who aren't risk-averse. (It was still the fifth most sold smartphone of its primary Finnish retailer DNA in December 2013, and first in its price range. This despite the fact that public sales only started the 11th, and demo units only arrived the following week, AFAIK.)

Put it this way: I bought my Jolla knowing the fact that it's a first-generation device, even if slightly big, square and klunky for my tastes (like all phones these days), and at this time somewhat quirky, eating through battery like a madman and rebooting at random intervals. Then again, this is what all my previous smartphones have been doing, more or less.
