How much would you pay for a SFOS license? [answered]

Talking already about pre-orders (https://together.jolla.com/question/158159/together-set-up-an-sfos-for-xperia-pre-order-please/) and the possibility that SFOS licences might be sold, how much could they cost? This would be a novelty for a mobile device, having users to buy the HW and the OS on top of it. How much could SFOS cost, how much are users ready to pay? Probably it is not possible to cover the development effort with the small number of "fan boys" I expect going this way. What are you willing to pay or should this even be free, maybe a trial licence?

I don't need Alien Dalvik or MfE so I would not pay any extra for those.

For the basic SFOS license I could pay around 30eur...50eur maybe.

I don't know the going rate, as it were. I don't know, of the cost of a new handset, how much that handset costs to make (with a small profit for the manufacturer) and how much of the overall cost is for the software. Also, certainly with Android, I guess the higher price of handsets from, say Sony or Samsung also includes a few software updates and security updates. Furthermore, Android handsets have to take into account the fact that newer versions of Android require beefier specs.

Off the top of my head, if it were guaranteed updates for 24 months at least, I think £80-100 would be a fair enough price. At some point (if regular updates and version changes keep happening) SFOS may well go past the limiting hardware of the J1 so to promise unlimited updates would not be wise, practicable or even possible.

Just a thought - that stuff about updates and hardware only relates if you own one phone. If you bought a SFOS licence, could it be transferred between phones?

I'd be willing to pay up to 50 Euro for a full-fledged SFOS license, complete with Alien Dalvik and at least 24 months of updates. Also, all the hardware of the given device should be fully supported!

But at the moment, I'm pretty happy with my Jolla C and the Intex Aqua Fish as a backup. I sometimes enjoy the looks of other people, when they see the bright red back cover of my C, while they all use the same boring grey/black/white/silver Samsungs and iPhones. (Okee, the camera IS crap.)

This is between Jolla <-> Sony, not between manufactures and customers. You should not pay for any licenses.

I want to pay for a complete product. HW+SW. I don't want to bother with buying from a vendor and going through the hell of installing the SW on my own. Especially on a mobile phone.

I agree, the product should be usable 'out of the box'. Software license should be included in the price for the phone

Zero This sounds similiar to ApB? Yes. Because I pay either for hardware or support, we're humans and we pay for things we can grab or use. Not for licences or intellectual property, or other awful concepts.

I don't need to buy necessarily hardware and software together, an awful idea from Microsoft Windows. But I will pay for support, if I get the full-source under GPL/LGPL/MIT/BSD-License.

Similiar to Red Hat: I want be able to buy an API-key which I enter on first start or installation, which gives me access to OTA-Updates, Store, AlienDalvik and (if you need it) Exchange. Sounds much like this good old CD-Key, it is. By the way, you still have to enter the CD-Key into IOQuake3 (fully GPLed free source from ID Software), because it uses still the data-files.

Anyway, I would buy the phone with software on it, also! But why not split it up and even earn damn money with other supported devices :)

I absolutely agree. I am willing to pay once for the hardware and afterwards for software updates. Especially regular (at least per month) security updates. I also prefer OSS.

It would be worth 100 Eur for me, to continue having Sailfish OS on my phone. Let it be one price for HW and SW, or separately. Or having something like an contract with 30 Eur per year.
