After display splash, received calls cannot be picked up

I dropped the jolla 1. The display got splashed, but it is still ok to work with.

However, when somebody calls me, the display is not being activated, so I cannot pick up. I can only call back after the caller hangs up. Pick up is possible in one single case though, if the screen lock is not on (i.e. before its activated) and/or if the display is not dimmed for a long time and the phone app is active (at full display).

When I make a call, the display gets dark, and only after pressing the side buttons, the display is activated again. Only then I can hang up.

How would you explain this behavior and how to workaround it?

looks like proximity sensor problem?

What makes you think like this? Why the button for activating the display won't work, even if it were the proximity sensor?

Yes, I had a broken screen with a crack going across the sensor and I had exactly the same behaviour as you are seeing.

So, did you replace the proximity sensor and it functioned after it ?

I used a screen protector to keep the screen together (which ultimately fails), that made the sensor working for a while. Eventually I had to get a new phone.
