Don't expect too much, you won't get any of that (maybe 1. will come later though, according to James latest comment).

I hope that currenlty available devices will also benefit from the OS improvements.

My list is the same as @tvicol but Google certification won't happen. I'm happy with just aliendalvik, and if I can later install Google Services and get Play Storeup and chooching, it's a big plus, too!

Let's see:

  1. Roughly the same level of stability as the original Jolla phone
  2. Alien Davlik support about on par with the original Jolla phone (being able to run Pokemon Go would be nice, but I don't expect it)
  3. All round support for the same features as the original Jolla phone
  4. Smoother UI and all round better performance than the original Jolla phone thanks to the faster hardware
  5. Camera support about equivalent to the AOSP ROM Sony themselves is offering
  6. Support for at least some of the additional hardware features of the Xperia X (the finger print reader would be cool)

I've already got an Xperia X lying around in it's box waiting for a SailfishOS ROM to put on it so I can't say that I'm not very enthusiastic about the prospect of it, but some of you people need to limit your expectations a bit. There's no reason for Jolla to add software features to the Xperia X port that aren't already in SailfishOS or about the be added to it anyway. We already know that it's just going to be a single ROM image that we're going to have to figure out how to put on the Jolla phone on our own so some official Jolla dual boot feature is already out of the question. The only way that's going to happen is if you find some ROM loading application that offers this as a feature.

Well, these are realistic expectations (except for 6.), which I fully share.

And 5. will definitely not be there at the start, but probably later (see latest Jolla Community IRC meeting minutes).

" limit your expectations " ? wtf Since when did it become a milestone to have average shitty hardware ? What's the f-ing point of decent hardware and a decent camera if you're still going to get piss poor pictures? They need to pull their collective F - ing fingers out and stop pissing about, if they want to be an actual serious mobile OS they should fix stuff that's been broke since the start or wrap it up and call it a day, I'm sick of this shoddy service and the never ending promises, non wonder I'm using my windows phone more, at least they have native apps and the basics covered, and people have the cheek to call that shit lol !

@davekelly The thing about cameras, specially high end ones, is that supporting them requires engineers with a LOT of very specialized knowledge and being a small company Jolla has never had many engineers with much of this specialized knowledge. A small company is always going to have limited developer resources so expecting one to be able to go toe to toe with much bigger companies who can afford to spend several times more money on developing essentially the same product is unrealistic to say the least.

Seriously, if you want all the neat little features and high end specs, then buy an iPhone or a Samsung Glaxy S and be done with it.

There are finger print reader related strings in the translations. Are there other phones with finger print reader or if not then they may be for Xperia X?

werdinand ( 2017-07-23 18:46:52 +0200 )edit

@werdinand My guess is that they're related to the Turing Phone, which also has a fingerprint reader.

The thing i hope/expect most is to get some traction going with app developers. We need a lot of stuff and new HW might attract people to write new/better apps.

Also i hope sony and jolla to work together to bring us mainline kernels.

Well if we all by new and expensive hardware than I think the benefit should be clear: A faster system and usage of the better camera. As an enthusiast I would have always been okay with spending some more money for some better hardware. Especially the camera always bothered me on the Jolla 1. So in my opionion better speed and the full usage of the camera should be the main goals.

I dont expect much only a real release, I found Xperia X around 300€, but I have no motivation to buy it... for me does not make any sense buy a phone (expensive for me) for more wait to a SFOS release.

On the other hand if I dont buy it now, when SFOS will released, maybe Xperia X will be discontinued and very hard to find. I dont know what to do.

The consensus seems to be now, that buying a phone that's just about to be discontinued is a great idea. Then you pay an undisclosed amount for the OS, that you have to install yourself, then hope nothing breaks, and if it does, that spares will be available for several years, as you have no warranty from the moment you flash it. Things won't work properly, and it's pot luck if you ever get decent photo's for maybe a couple of years. probably. So yeah, it's a good idea not to have much expectations, that way you'll avoid the inevitable disappointment.

We dont have any release date of SFOS for Xperia X and that is disappointing, we can wait months or years who knows... Im still remember SFOS for Galaxy 3 LTE and other phones.

What I expect is: be able to install that port (officially) on a Sony Xperia X Compact ASAP. As the hardware is almost identical (despite screen and battery AFAIK) to the Xperia X's (F5121) hardware the official port now is aimed for, this shouldn't be that difficult I presume?

Let´s hope this endeavor will lead to more app developers, windows phone just died from lack of it, but at least we have support for many android apps, but so did Blackberry...

Still not sure if I want to replace my dying Jolla C with one or go back to Jolla 1 and hope for a release on a smaller Sony device, but nobody knows how long that would be, if they even decide to, I want an officially supported port. I hope this will not turn out like android and windows phone where a phone only is supported with official updates for like a year or so. I guess this will end with 2 dead jolla phones for me and no chance to get a Xperia X because it sold out=/

I think they should have gone for the modular fairphone 2, one of the biggest problems we have had with the Jolla devices are replacement parts, and now we get the choice to jump to a discontinued product where we have to viod warranty from the get go.

I don´t know what to do here either. My only phones are Jolla 1 and Jolla C. And my main phone Jolla C has broken rear camera and a broken headphone jack. Not sure how long my Jolla 1 would last if I go back to it, it´s pretty worn out too. But everything works except a lot of green (dead?) pixel clouds on the edges of the screen, but they have been there forever. A better built phone would be nice though... Unfortunately there is not telling how many Xperia X are left in stock in Sweden. Hmm, perhaps I can ask.

If you want a smaller device, take a look at the Xperia X Compact. If I recall correctly, it's very similar to the Xperia X and some people were able to run the community build on it (Please check for yourself as I'm not quite sure about that).

@ghling we need a smaller phone with official support. Community isn't enough. I really hope for the xz1 compact to be officially supported once all bugs are fixed for the X. My J1 started to show its age :/

ApB ( 2017-10-09 14:22:57 +0200 )edit

+1 I want official support, 1 big and 1 smaller phone would be enough. My biggest fear with this whole Xperia project is fragmentation, it would be harder for a community help eachother out if we all spread out as users of different devices. But I do tend to worry too much and besides, not many of them are going to be officially supported.

Not really a realistic expectation, but would be really good for features and security (not to mention tinkering) - SailfishOS built on top of this:
