I see more and more resistance against Android apps showing up in Jolla Store. I am curious, so I open this poll. Vote if You agree, then we will see how much interest in this is.

I understand there are many moral and technical reasons why a native app is more welcome. I do not want a FLAME war here, so unless your opinion is MODERATE, please just VOTE as you will. Thank You!

Edit: This is not a question, there will be no answer accepted, please understand this. Use the up button, if You agree with the statement, and do not use it (or use the down button) if You don't. For making it less offensive, I changed "poll" to "survey".

This poll has been edited to be a community post so no karma is granted to it's author.
All answers MUST also have the community wiki checked too, thank you!

I even don't understand why there are Android apps in the Jolla Store. Because for Android Apps we have Yandex so this is not needed in the Jolla Store.

I think if there has to be Android apps in Jolla Store, they should at least be marked as such. There should be an option in the settings to hide those Android apps.

@petros This is not a duplicate. The other questions are more moderate, this is about not having android apps in the store.

I have to agree!

please concentrate on Sailfish apps only.

1) The Store is cluttered on the first Page already - apps that don't belong there make things worse.

2) The Store has still some performance problems. No need to make it worse by offering Android apps. (right now the store just refuses to update the native app "ohm" - make the store stable first!)

3) we really don't have that many native apps, but still a new app or an update takes several days of investigation before available in the Store. Please concentrate on native apps and don't waste time with testing Android apps.

4) Apps in Jolla Store should run on Jolla - some comments on Android apps indicate that thats not the case for everyone. Better leave it.

5) "Alarm Sounds" claims to be "for Jolla !!" - its a really ugly Android app with zero system integration! The logo is misleading - with purpose! Ban such behaviour from store!

6) Android app "Military News" for U.S. Military Departments. Really don't know what to say here .... Speechless (just waiting for the official NSA app!)

Make a separate Store for Android apps, if you need to offer them for whatever reason. (Is the plan to earn money with that?? - doesn't that contradict the cooperation with yandex?)

But please please please, stop mixing things up!!

If you want to do it - do it quick. Changes like that are frustrating. A nice thing to do would be to help developers move existing Android apps to Yandex e.g. by generating AppDF which Yandex supports. I'm not waiting for that though. I'm moving already.

So much unbelievable CRAP pours in there from the Android swamp. Didn't Jolla say that they had pretty strict quality and demands for usefulness in the Jolla store? Now its cluttered with junk that no-one needs. Its much better with a few 100 GOOD native apps than thousands of low-grade android shovel-ware.

It would make sense if the Android apps in the Jolla store were very popular, high quality, and running fine on Jolla. Unfortunately that's not the case, so its' better to remove them alltogether.

I don't mind the Andoid Apps at the store, but they have to be clearly marked and/or separated from the native Apps.

But I do wish that the Jolla Store App was capable of showing the latest 10 or perpaps 20 Apps. Today you have to search through the entire App list manually to find new ones.

actually the newest apps show up under the "show apps with most likes" button when you open category "all". or did you mean that with "manually"?

Acce ( 2014-01-18 08:32:44 +0300 )edit

Actually they do ... but there is no indication that this is the way apps are sorted. The user is left alone here :-(

Aigner ( 2014-01-22 17:12:21 +0300 )edit

It took me some time to figure out, as there are no indications of the sorting, that they are sorted by latest update timestamp. That still do not get me the latest applications, that has been let into the store.

As some users already pointed out, Android apps should be marked as such and I fully agree with that.

Having Android apps in the Jolla store has one advantage. As I understand it, these apps are tested for the Jolla, so at least, we know, they work correctly. With Yandex this is not always guaranteed, much less so with other markets such as F-Droid, Amazon or Aptoide.

I disagree, it's ok to have all available apps in the same store. However, they could be separated to their own categories as suggested already at #914

Editor's note: I added this option, as the poll just needs both options to be a fair poll (personally I voted for the other answer, and in there I definitely agree with #4 & #5). In future, when someone adds a new poll (they are always nice), please add also some opposite answers for people to vote. Refer to #4389

Good point. Otherwise it's not a poll...

Aigner ( 2014-01-18 02:25:45 +0300 )edit

So one answer polls don't count? Kidding! ;)

Tanghus ( 2014-01-18 04:29:04 +0300 )edit

@jjaone in my dictionary a poll is something you can give your vote for or not. There is a down arrow up there anyway, you can dislike it if You want alternative. I do not want a petition or anything. Your vote will not mean more than You agree with the statement. I made it as moderate as I could.

Macilaci457 ( 2014-01-18 11:21:11 +0300 )edit

You can read my view on this question in the Answer I posted here.. wishing only that same topics could be talked in one or few places instead of here-and-there.. no ptobs having this poll here, just didn't see a good reason to vote for or against but gave an Answer instead..

I think, looking forward in the future, that native sailfish apps will grow in number and, if now is it useful to have android apps to fill our needs, in the future we will have all we need in the jolla store as native apps. I hope in the future to be able to uninstall all android apps. For this reason it would be better if in the jolla store were admitted only native apps.

Let me answer to this 'question' by not voting but linking to the on-going discussion to differentiate SailfishOS and Android apps in Jolla Store (and maybe in device / Launcher too): https://together.jolla.com/question/914/differentiate-native-sailfishos-and-android-apps-in-jolla-store/

There is quite a lot of support to keep the two platforms separated and that request has been roadmap'ed already so we can be quite sure that Store will be changed accordingly in future upgrades (see the accepted answer there).

What you are asking is to see if there is enough support in community to want to take the separation to the extreme and get rid of Android apps from the store altogether. While I understand the motivation to do so, and I'm personally a strong advocate of SailfishOS and hope the native platform gains more traction and developer interest in the future I still think that Android apps have a place in the Jolla application proviosion (atleast for now, when the features of the of native OS and system/3rd-part apps is still not conplete).

It might be interesting to see what the outcome of this vote will be, but for now, I think it is enough to make it possible for all of us see easily the separation of native and Android apps in Store and in device. This could be done by providing diferent iconsets, brandinkg marks to them and/or enabling appropriate categories, views tags, filters or saved search lists etc that clearly show that the Android apps are there in addition to and an alternative to native SailfishOS app provision, which should be the default, recommened, standatd and best choice to get things done when using Jolla, and when developing apps to it.

Also, this question somewhat duplicates the discussion about how and to what extent the separation of the platforms should be done (see the question linked to this answer). But, maybe it's useful to see how much support there is to make the Jolla Store exclusively a SailfishOS-store (which is not a bad idea in itself). Maybe it could it done when there is more native apps to fulfill the demand of most use-cases and needs of most users (and developers),

Just my 2 cents.. ;)

"fulfill the demand of most use-cases and needs of most users (and developers)"

But thats what the Android apps in Jolla store DON'T provide! You are NOT finding there your Opera or Dolphin Browser or Google earth or WhatsApp or Viber or Temple Run. In Fact you won't find any of the Top 100 Android apps. And you wont do so any soon.

Only smaller developers do care of Jolla Store, because they see chances there, they haven't got on Play Store. For a good reason, because there are better apps...

The strategy is just not working out... the Jolla store will attract more and more of these "not so good" apps and customers will not award this... thats going to be very bad marketing for Jolla.

Aigner ( 2014-01-18 04:04:25 +0300 )edit

The full sentence was: "Maybe it could it done when there is more native apps to fulfill the demand of most use-cases and needs of most users (and developers)," And before that: "maybe it's useful to see how much support there is to make the Jolla Store exclusively a SailfishOS-store (which is not a bad idea in itself)". So, I am in a same boat with you, don't you think.. ;)

foss4ever ( 2014-01-18 04:56:25 +0300 )edit

I know the citation was not complete... ;-)

Just wanted to point out that Android apps don't improve the situation right now. They don't fill the void.

I agree, and I haven't give my opinion at all, just because I do not want to influence people here. I consider to change the question sentence as "should make the Jolla Store exclusively a SailfishOS apps"...

I dont mind havind android apps in the Jolla store but Id like them to have their own section . when paid apps arrive we will need a section for, new, free abd paid apps. this would be the time to create an android section . it would also be good if the android devs were encouraged to add sailfish API's. paid android apps in the store could in the future be a revenue stream for Jolla especially if they are fully integrated.
