I propose to Jolla to use kickstarter to raise funds (and Awareness) in the software and developer community to fund a team of SFOS developers (can be from the Jolla community and Jolla in house developers) that are dedicated to porting well loved and known and used Android and Linux applications to the SFOS native format.

Based on a business evaluation and a voting initiative the top 10apps could be choosen and developed. The developers would be paid part time out of the kickstarter fund for their effort. Other parts would finance licensing costs etc.

Yes thats exactly the thing I was talking about a few days ago on the #SailfishOS irc channel when I was talking about bountys for special features in SailfishOS. (like the HaikuOS project does this) Would be nice if you could propose that for the next #mer-meeting (next wednesday if I am correct). I try to make it also on time to support it.

Also it does not necessarily be kickstarter I guess. Could be something else entirely.

Had the same thought a few days ago. I would use Bountysource or a similar site (there aren't too much. May be Fossfactory ?) for this. We could post a specific task, publish it here and on related sites, collect a bounty for the programmer and if it's interesting enough for the people, the bounty may rise to a attractive level. Just as idea to bring the whole thing forward.

If the apps you have in mind are ones that have closed APIs the whole thing wont work. They can shut you down in an instance and all the money time and effort can do down the drain.

On the other hand we still don't have quality apps for many stuff in SFOS (ie we still don't have the much discussed browser based suite for doing stuff on the phone) that can use a model like that for funding.

@pawel not quite. Indiegogo idea was for funding a Sailfish OS port for another phone that is unlocked. My idea is to use the skill of people in this forum, SFOS/Linux developers, and developers from Jolla to group together and create a team and plan to use kickstarter/indiegogo or what have you and dedicate time for Porting the top 10 popular Android/iOS/Linux mobile software APPLICATIONS and run them on your SFOS phone natively. This would have to be accomplished with some consent or licensing being paid to the original software developers of say Netflix iOS app, or Cryptomator iOS/OSx app etc.
1. figure out if there is a business case and could kickstarter raise enough funds to pay for a team to develop this and pay for the licensing costs;
2. figure out which apps to develp;
3. determine if the original app devs are ok with forking this onto SFOS or want some revenue, licensing fees;
4. Post on kickstarter listing the apps and creating funding goals for 1 app, 2 apps, 5 apps, 10 apps, so anybody can pay for one fo the groups say $50 for 1 app, $200 for 2 apps etc based on the popular apps listed with no particular order to what you will get, e.g. just 2 of the top 10 for example, whaterver is developed and completed first.
5. Report progress on each app in kickstarter, create a github folder for each project and schedule time for available resources and resolve problems/bugs, have volunteer testers etc.

I am quite sure Jolla staff did discuss such options several times already. Times when funding was sparse, fix costs too high, the ecosystem not taking off, and for sure as an alternative to the first two Jolla devices funding SFOS development.

The top 10 applications we have btw: Mail, Phone, Messaging, Alarm Clock, Torch, Camera, Music Player, Navigation, Notes, Calendar
