Have you seen questions or tags very close to each other, but not quite duplicates? In this wiki we sort these out together. Add an answer to start a new discussion.

1. Sorting of closely related questions (why is this important?)

2. To achieve a meaningful, clear, intuitive and shared notion of set of tags

3. Already cleaned (links to discussions):

4. Code-of-conduct! Before merging duplicates / changing existing tags:

  • Suggestions (formatted as "Answer") should be listed here for at least 2 working days to see what comments they get.
  • Thereafter, answers should be revised according to the result of the comments, for example, making it clear that a certain set of tags should not be merged and stating the reason.
  • Wait another working day before you start editing tags and check what the discussion is. If previously there has been a lot of different ideas and comments, you may even ask that a moderator gives the go-ahead.
  • Report all retagging with a comment, so that moderators can cleanup the back-end (otherwise unused tags are shown in the list of choises when tagging a question)

@jgr I edited that part to be not so normative: "If you run into a question that can't actually be answered at all, or is a simple How-to or Poll / Survey consider commenting that to the writer and/or convert the question to a wiki (edit -> mark with "community wiki")"

Is it better now?

foss4ever ( 2014-01-20 12:38:03 +0300 )edit

I propose to introduce the concept of sticky topics centralizing news / main ideas and so on. A meta-topic could be created to gather sitcky topics title. Yesterday, I was suggested to use tags, but it's not efficient. I think sticky topics could be good to reduce the number of "duplicate topics".

TNZ ( 2014-01-21 10:44:09 +0300 )edit

@TNZ Who selects sticky topics, and by what criteria? And where are they shown?

foss4ever ( 2014-01-21 11:01:12 +0300 )edit

@jjaone : The main idea is to have a cleaner area. I think that guys who spend a lot of time here are the best (like admins & moderators) to manage sticky topics and the meta-topic.

Maybe, a specific site section giving news about activity here could help instead of maintening sticky-topics.

TNZ ( 2014-01-21 11:12:20 +0300 )edit

@TNZ A Dashboard giving a quick overview of what is happening in here, hot topis, latest questions, answer, comments, whos on line, top 10 roadmapped and / or closed questions, etc etc..with selectable sticky topics, news, howtos, guides + a link section to related Jolla & developnent spesific sites like Care, Store, blogs and community portals..

  • audio (39)
  • sound (18)
  • sounds (8)
  • tones (6) <-- none of these posts are about ringtone, which seems to be well working tag
  • hd-voice (1) <-- post about amr-wb codec
  • voice (3) <-- used in a meanings of voice commanding and talked notes
  • noise (1) <-- used with a tag audio, meaning disturbing sound
  • talk (0) <-- not in use, but visible as a suggested tag

Any suggestions for these?

My 2 cents:

  • "sound" and "sounds" should be merged.
  • "audio", "voice" and "sound" should remain all three, however retagging of specific questions may be sensible.
  • "tones" seems to be used synonymous to "sound"
  • "hd-voice": What do the specialist say? Mergable with "voice" or required because indicating a special concept?
  • "noise" should be used for sound which is not up to the quality expected or which should not be there (connoted negatively). Retagging of specific questions might be required.

@jgr has many good points here. I support this.

TimTTK ( 2014-01-23 11:20:06 +0300 )edit

Are "sound" and "sounds" really the same? I regard "sound" as the phone's ability to produce sound, while "sounds" is more about what type of sound is used. That being said, there are several posts were "sounds" is used, inaccurate imo, together with "volume" to indicate no output. These could probably be moved to "sound".

Mohjive ( 2014-01-23 11:45:42 +0300 )edit

@Mohijive: As far as I see, "sounds" is used either as simple plural of "sound" and in the sense of (1 sound out of) a set of sounds (notification tones). However, it will be difficult to convince people to use "notification-tones" instead of "sounds" to avoid mixing up of "sound" and "sounds".

jgr ( 2014-01-23 12:13:35 +0300 )edit

@jgr: "sounds" in the plural form should be converted to just "sound" imo, that's what I was trying to write last in my previous comment. And using a completely different tag, as you suggest, for the other sense would be better.

For media-player and media there are several overlapping tags

  • mediaplayer (41)
  • media-player (1)
  • music-player (18)
  • music (24)
  • video (39)
  • media (32)
  • mediafiles (1)
  • playback (5)

The native application for playing music is Media, while videos are opened from the Gallery. The player tags could probably be merged into one tag, media-player (with hyphen).

Most discussions tagged with music or video talks about media in general and maybe those tags are redundant there. Should a discussion about different media files on disk be tagged "media", "media, files" (two tags) or "media-files"?

Then there's playback, mostly about the media-player's capability to play some file type. Should that be moved into a combination of the player tag and the media tag?

edit flag offensive delete publish link more

Comments

My 2 cents:

  • "video" should remain a tag of its own.
  • "music" may probably better be converted to "audio"
  • "mediafiles": I do not see the reason, that this is required as tag of its own, not even for the one question where it is being used.
  • "playback" is probably a sensible tag on its own (best in combination with "video" and/or "audio" as 2nd tag)
  • All the "...player" tags should be merged (my favorite would also be "media-player").
jgr ( 2014-01-23 02:46:35 +0300 )edit

Relevant to this issue, there's also this question: https://together.jolla.com/question/17550/media-player-should-be-renamed/

simo ( 2014-01-23 22:02:27 +0300 )edit

Much easier to tag medias wirh video, audio, image, music (being a type of audio) and all of them.with 'media' and playback 'player'. E.g if you refer to music library features use tags 'music' 'player' and maybe 'media', and other media-types accordingly .

I try to minimize my new posts here but every ones in a while there's need to ask/tell something which might not be important/interesting to all other users.

When improving this forum, I guess we need to a place for random/short questions/stuff. Like this:

I couldn't find any info on the "roadmap" tag. Could someone point me to the right direction or tell me what it's all about? (I just recently learnt about it, though been using this forum quite frequently since dec. -> what I do know is that "roadmap" tells the feature is in the works by Jolla)

OR THIS:

Even in beta mode I love this phone! AND CAN'T WAIT FOR THE NEXT UPDATE!!!!!!

You can read more about the most used tags and also about the roadmaptag in here: https://together.jolla.com/question/8466/together-howto-tags/?answer=8468#post-id-8468

Quote from that Answer: "The most important reserved tags are: update Reserved only for release notes issued when a new software update is available. roadmap Reserved only to tag items that are committed to be delivered in a future update."

Totally right, and these typo errors can be retagged whenever. These are already fixed from the used tags, however it's great that you informed them here, as now @eric is able to clear the backend too (to hide them from suggested tags). @eric let us now when the backend is cleared to edit this as "cleaned".

simo ( 2014-01-23 16:25:38 +0300 )edit

I'm pretty sure (like almost 100%) that the correct spelling is ambiance!! not ambience!! So please confirm this with Jolla proper before changing

Sure in english it would be ambience, but remember when the Jolla guys say it in videos, it's not with an english accent, they actually say ambiance.

Of course, I might be mistaken :P But I think we better confirm this, before making any changes

currently three tag suggestions for calendar entries

  • calendar

  • calendars

  • calender

IMO, Except for the typo (calender) others could be left - calendar referring to the app itself, calendars referring to all variable calendars used in the app.

What's the difference between how-to and guidelines?

There are 6 topics tagged with guidelines of which 5 are also tagged with how-to, and 52 topics tagged with how-to.

I propose the guidelines tag to be removed, and for simplicty use only how-to for posts that give info about this forum or codes-of-conduct, how-to do things with Jolla device and help and tips about different features etc. How-to's are guides, right? And if some question is not only a how-to, or the topic is general, important and frequently needed enough, let's convert it to FAQ-entry.

edit flag offensive delete publish link more

Comments

@jjaone: guidelinestag initial purpose is to promote how we, Community members, use together.jolla.com. The intention would be to find under the tag all topics related to doing it together the proper way, self organized, transparent collaboration. how-to relates to the device usage. IMHO, these tags aren't overlapping and should co-exist nicely now that I tried to explain how they're intended to be used...

eric ( 2014-01-27 22:56:42 +0300 )edit

@eric Thanks for the explanation..combonarion But, consider also that tags can be used in combonation too to scope specific topics, e.g 'together' and 'how-to' searches how-to's and guides related to this forum. Several tags can be part of an URL too, so they are as easy to use..So, there does not have to be a unique tag for everything but tags can and should be used in combination. If one tag.is prefered anf device spesific howto's should be distinctive then jolla-howto, and together-howto would do it, or jolla-help, together-help, .. My point is hiw do ppl know.that guidelines are only for Together, and Howto's for device, and.what if we will have other kind of guides for development or store etc. should new tags be invented to them too? Modular use of tags.would enable those to be tagged with 'development' 'and 'howto', or 'store' and 'howto'.

Concerning bug and xx.xx.xx.xx version tags.

Currently we have:

  • bug x 628
  • possible-bug x 14
  • 1.0.1.10 x 1
  • 1.0.1.12 x 1
  • 1.0.2.5 x 27

I am sure it would be useful for the developers to know which version a bug is found in, but asking people reporting the bug to add the proper version tag might be a bit tedious.

Instead, I propose to use sailfish-xx.xx.xx.xx-bug, for example sailfish-1.0.2.5-bug. This way, if people report a bug, they will be implicitly asked to check their Sailfish OS version. Naturally, the bug tag would continue to exist as it might be used for apps. But this approach might at least help the developers with some reports.

Concerning retagging (if we agree on the above approach), we can base it on the date of report in combination with the release date.

Not sure what to do about the possible-bug tag though.

edit flag offensive delete publish link more

Comments

Hmmm perhaps possible-bug could be retagged as unconfirmed-bug, but how would that work with the version suggestion. I mean sailfish-1.0.2.5-unconfirmed-bug sounds rather long for a tag.

avdwoude ( 2014-01-28 10:12:17 +0300 )edit

Well, if the version is already too tedious, how would you expect the users to know if a bug was part of the sailfish, or nemo, or whatever else layer a Jphone has? :-) How to distinguish OS-related bugs from Jolla-made application's bugs?

CsTom ( 2014-01-28 10:50:56 +0300 )edit

Let's do this the easy way: bugtag is used when users report or detect something that doesn't work right, or encounter errors while using the phone. They are all potential bugs and some will get confirmed by other users and then the tag can stay. But if they are not identified or confirmed as bugs the tag should be just removed. Version strins shouldn't be clued to wird bug, but given there own tag like '1.0.2.5',. The other tags then point to what system or app etc is not working properly e.g. emailapp or sailfishosif it's abt the OS , or.UIif something in the UX is feeling wrong etc.. etc.. Once again, note that a good tag-space is such that using two or three tags together questions substance can be conveyed and contrxtualized, without the need to append different thjngs to long-dash-separated-things ;)

foss4ever ( 2014-01-29 13:56:16 +0300 )edit

I see the current tagging quite well working. People are not yet familiar with using the version number, but all we can do is to use them ourselves and hope that others starts to use the too. However, a bug reported without version number still advances as it should - and I suppose the devs might retag the bug questions after the fix is released, and the release is confirmed to fix the bug. possible-bug has been introduced by users and adopted well (no other similar tags out there), so that's also (currently) a well working tag. So, I don't see an issue here.

should we add a bug-fixed or remove the bug for solved issues?

I know that the contacts tag is now set to "cleaned", but I have a question:

There are presently 78 uses of the people tags (and 2 uses of the recent-people tags) as well (and some of them are tagged with contacts as well, already)).

Considering the Jolla app is actually called People, maybe change contacts into people-contacts (which would make entering of both people and contacts tags suggest the same tag, but also include questions mainly about, say, "the contact name for this message" - where the contact in question is taken from the People app)?

The two recent-people ones are both dealing with the "Recent"-part in the People app, have "Recent" mentioned in the question headline, and should/could therefore probably just be removed.

... or is it better to have people and contacts separated?
(If that is the case, a whole bunch of questions tagged contacts should really be tagged people - e.g. "Arrangement of contacts containing special characters [closed]", tagged contacts, and closed due to being a duplicate of "Bug: names with accented characters are sorted incorrectly", tagged people.)

edit flag offensive delete publish link more

Comments

I suppose there is a problem, not having the both tags, but how they are used. People = name of the app, Contacts = list of contacts, so clearly both are necessary. What could be done here is to go through posts in all three categories (people, contacts, both) and check that the post is about the used tags. However, no merging for these, right?

simo ( 2014-01-31 05:14:50 +0300 )edit

I started with that, a bulk retagging feature could come handy... and yes contacts is about contacts and people about the app

That's definitely a difficult one..

at the moment there are:

  • phonebook (9)

I noticed the following somewhat overlapping tags exist:

  • lock-code x 12
  • code x 4 (2 related to pin-code, other two related to source-code)
  • pin x 7

Naturally, some of them relate to the pin-code needed to unlock the sim-card, and other perhaps to the lock-screen code. But I wonder if people will differentiate between the two, or perhaps even understand the difference.

I suggest to use pin-lock-code or lock-pin-code, and not differentiate it any further.

edit flag offensive delete publish link more

Comments

Wider tag cloud needed... "code" can be part of pin-lock, device-lock, and programming code, code of conduct... not to mention even more. To begin with, those two using only code but referring to pin seems to be the easiest ones, but I don't know whether to retag with pinor pin-lock-code for them (I'd prefer the latter).

simo ( 2014-01-28 18:48:37 +0300 )edit

Pin code is used to unlock the SIM-card, and is most natural to tag it as pin-code. When refering to the code to unlock the the phone either lock-codeor security-codecan be used, both are probably well-known to all who have ever used mobile phones. These tags are short, exact, and easy to use for all. Source-code is unrelated to these and proper tag for it, obviously, is source-code.

Some threads about the N9 glance screen functionality. There are three closed threads:

And three open threads:

The latter three could probably be "merged", and, while doing that, the tags could use some clean-up.

edit flag offensive delete publish link more

Comments

As a user of N9 for 2+ years that screen where you can see date, time and other info when touches are not registered is LPM or Low Power Mode screen, or also it has been called LPS or Low Power Screen but calling it glance screen have seen only here. So lets talk.about LPM screen in N9 whether it is been glanced, peeked, quivkly looked, stared etc..

foss4ever ( 2014-01-30 23:44:42 +0300 )edit

In current Jolla device we can't talk about LPM cause the used screen technology does not allow it. But with OLED or e-ink TOHs it is possible to have something shown in a display that is in low-power mode (so not on or off).

foss4ever ( 2014-01-30 23:48:58 +0300 )edit

I think the terminology "glance" comes from the Nokia Lumia series, where even the Lumia 920, with an IPS LED screen, has "glance", so it should be possible on Jolla's display, if you are prepared to have a reduced stand-by time.

But the technology on why or why not we can have it on current hardware is for the above threads.
