So I was thinking I should somehow try out Sailfish OS before I go and buy a Sony Xperia X to make sure I really want to use it. I already have a perfectly good phone, and spending $300 on something that I might not want after all isn't a good idea. I know Sailfish OS was ported to the 1st gen Nexus 7, and I have one of those. I just need to replace the digitizer because I dropped it. So I'm thinking I'll install it on that. However, the Jolla Store isn't working on the 1st gen Nexus 7. Not much point in buying that new digitizer and installing Sailfish OS if I can't install any apps. Can I download them from a website or something?

@lispy why not convert your comment to an answer. As it is a correct one.

you can also download installer packages (rpms) directly from openrepos and install them manually without warehouse

Or you can download the rpms from any source (if you want to).

There is a whole world of apps on openrepos.net that can be installed via the warehouse app.

Or even better: Storeman, a new client for openrepos.net under active development.

Personnally, I use often Warehouse, Store and Yalp Store ... As said in comment, you can also download directly the apk on the website and click on it in trasnfert menu to install it ... Without any tools.

F-Droid ( https://f-droid.org/ ) offers Free and Open Source Apps. This is a more consistent choice with an operating system with privacy/security concerns.
