I own an Sony Xperia XA2 (it is available in The Netherlands as of Jan 2018) and I'd like to install Sailfish OS on this phone.

Can I already install the current latest version on the phone using a Sailfish X license? How do I install the software/firmware? Are the steps the same as on an Xperia X? Or do I have to wait until Sailfish OS 3 before this phone is supported?

Does anyone know what exact type of Xperia XA2 will be supported? Here in the Czech Republic is available only Dual (type H4113). I guess that Sailfish will be only for single SIM, probably type H3123? Right?

I think both. Jolla wants to expand in markets where dual sim is a must have. Also the dual sim version of the xperia x will be officially supportet with the next update

It would be nice if some1 from jolla could answer thit. I am from CZ too and I would like to buy some new phone right now, but I want something what will run SFOS with OTA in the future.

It looks like that no one knows the answer. I asked the same question on Jolla Twitter channel but without luck as here... :-( probably someone from Jolla should know it if the SFOS was running on MVC2018

I actoually found out that tmobile is selling xa2 single sim in cz.

Hmm, who cares. No one confirms that will be supported neither and I know a little bit Jolla. For sure I have already bought Xperia X and problem looks solved :-)

I'm a owner of the Xperia XA2 H3123, there is no support from Open devices from Sony, but... I think that will no be any troubles to install the image made for H3113 as they almost the same device, I only noticed that the LTE bands are different.

carmeloferso ( 2018-04-09 17:36:46 +0300 )edit

Sony just announced Open devices support for XA2 within the last 2 weeks or so (Apr 2018).

lkraav ( 2018-04-25 13:38:40 +0300 )edit

Cool! Good to hear they are working with the H3113 and H4113. Thanks for sharing the link. Do you also happen to have any information about how to get it when it is ready. If you purchase a Sailfish X licence now, would that also apply to the XA2?

Nonstop_decay ( 2018-05-31 18:23:13 +0300 )edit

Good news for Xperia XA2 variants owners, there is some work in XDA using the Open devices sources to build AOSP and Lineage OS, and both are working on H3123 (not supported officialy), so I think that official Sailfish OS 3 for H3113 will work also on H3123 as they have the same hardware just differents LTE bands (also maybe will be problems with fingerprint as there is two versions of it in the XA2 "et516" or "fpc1035", but we don't know)

The Problem for me as sailish-user is: every time i need a new phone i have to buy a old one. My aqua fish is now broken and i need a new phone. Sony Xperia X is nearly two years old. When sailfish for XA2 is ready, its also nearly one year old. What should i buy now?

An Xperia X.
The XA2 does not offer more capable hardware (e.g. CPU performance), anyway.

I agree, if you compare the specs of the X versus the XA2 they are substantially the same. This is not a major move forward for Jolla, just another middle of the road phone that is two years younger, Jolla you need a Z in the phone title not an A. Now that would have been (would be !) interesting.

The XA2 is new. If jolla doesn't work as expexted, i think the XA2 will get android-updates two years longer.

  • bigger display 5.2" vs. 5.0"
  • 39h talktime vs 10h talktime
  • 863h vs 580h standby
  • LTE cat12/13 vs. LTE cat6
  • bluetooth 5.0 vs 4.2
  • dual SIM vs. sinlge SIM
  • 8core vs 6core

and some other things more.

@magheinz don't be fooled by the number of cores. The XA2 uses on A53 cores, which are meant as "LITTLE"-cores in a big.LITTLE configuration. I.e. it has no performance-oriented cores. Unless software suddenly becomes massively multithreaded, my guestimate is that even the JP1 runs most tasks just as quick as the XA2, despite having just two cores running at much lower frequency.

The XA2 might have many advantages, but processing power isn't one of them.

Unfortunately not. Sony Xperia X is currently the only one officially supported when it comes to the Sailfish OS on Xperia devices.

We'll have to wait and see if there will be support in the future. If I am right, Jolla is right now planning to expand to Sony Xperia X dual sim and the compact version. Not sure what will follow after those

@Sakke, Have you read the latest info where this question refers too?

New Sailfish devices announced in MWC 2018 include upcoming support for the brand new Sony’s XperiaTM XA2. In collaboration with Sony Open Device Program, Jolla will make Sailfish OS available for the XperiaTM XA2. Through the Sailfish X program interested tech heads can purchase an official Sailfish X license and install the OS on their brand new Sony’s XperiaTM XA2 devices.

@JSE well if you read it again carefully too, you'll see the word "upcoming". This answers your question.
