Hello,

I just got my Xperia X and installed SailfishX. I can't use it as my main phone for the moment due to a few annoyances, which some experienced sailors may be able to help with. In the ideal scenario I would avoid using Android applications, because I feel like it would defeat the purpose.

  1. default browser and email client are sluggish - what solutions are there (except for using an Android application) ?

  2. no facebook messenger integration (since Facebook dropped XMPP ...) - is there a solution to this / are there any other native applications of a well known protocol that offer video calls ? I would also like to be able to share stuff (ie. URLs) on this protocol so it should be available as an account also.

  3. scrolling speed in general is not great (it's more sluggish than ios/android, on similar hardware). I've also seen this on BB10; could this be a problem with all QML applications (ie. could it be the difference in the OpenGL implementations / transparency / slow JS interpreter / loading uncompressed images when scrolling fast / missing some caching ..). I'm not really looking for a fix, just trying to understand the cause.

  4. Is OpenRepos the main source of software repositories / are there others like it ?

  5. Please suggest a good RSS Reader and Reddit client that offer the ability to easily share article on logged-in accounts.

Thank you for the answers !

Sorry if some of the questions have already been asked, but I couldn't find answers for some of them and moreover, some answers may be obsolete.

Welcome! I'm a "new" sailor as well, first making the jump with Xperia X coming from my BlackBerry Passport, I clung to forever to avoid the iOS/Android train.

Those are features of Sailfish OS, since day one.

1)The Sailfish Browser runs quite smoothly here. For the E-Mail App (which is using qtwebkit) see: https://together.jolla.com/question/171114/xperia-xbug-qtwebkit-unusably-slow/ In short I fixed that and you can get my qtwebkit 5.212 build from openrepos if you need it right now. Otherwise just wait until version 2.2 will arrive and fixes that annoyance.

2)I am not on Facebook but there is Sailbook, https://openrepos.net/content/sailbook/sailbook

3) Scrolling speed can be set by the applications and there is a default value set for Silica / SailfishOS Apps. As for sluggishness Iam not sure what you mean. It runs pretty smooth here (for example scrolling down with the reddit app quickddit)

5) RSS-Reader: Tidings , Reddit Client: Quickddit

If you want to know about more apps please take a look at my SailfishOS App Podcasts on Youtube. Here is the playlist: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZqKOkheKdSM&list=PLil8g-4W6QQidZMPKraibTYdOdSw4G5sm Be aware that some of the videos are from 2013 and not all are in english.

3) I guess d3vstef means the symptoms you adressed in 1). Slow WebKit is the source of all webviews stuttering, just to clarify.

@mosen well, the browser does stutter quite a lot on pages that contain a lot of images, and I understand that a new qtwebkit would fix this. But there is some stuttering in any application that involves scrolling a ListView containing images. I'm thinking there is some low level optimization/trick on android/ios that prevents this stuttering.
