Hi all,

For some time I've had this strange issue with my microphone crackling noise. I can't really say for sure when the issue has began, but I assume it has started since Sailfish 2.1.4.14 Lapuanjoki. The issue occurs mainly on phone calls and while recording. So while this crackling noise comes out, no one can hear me on phone calls. The same is with the recordings, when played there's only the crackling sound. Also notable is that camera records sounds normally without crackling noises. Sometimes rebooting the phone helps for some time. Has anyone else had similar problems with microphone on SF device?

Here's also a record for example: http://puu.sh/AgsqL/fbeb7fcd1d.mp3

Yes. Not on device only calls but all the time when hooked up to Bluetooth in Mitsubishi Triton vehicle. Every call has the crackle noise over the vehicle speaker system during dial tone and call.

I had same issue and put the phone in the service. Finally they switched the mainboard.

Right now I'm not able to put the phone in the service. It's weird that this is occasional issue. Guess I could try to reset the phone and see if it helps (could also test in another version if it doesn't occur).

Hi all Sailors! I wanted to update this case a little bit since it could help other people with similar issues. In short, the only solution was to sent the phone in the service as @Qwerty here had already done. I found out that it was the upper mic which was failing, managed to run some CSD tools tests and gotcha. I assume that the camera and apps that recorded voice normally used the lower mic since they were working normally as I said in the post.

The main problem was Sony's statements in their warranty "Rooting or flashing voids the warranty". I'm not sure how this works in other countries under the EU laws but in Finland we have very strict consumer laws and especially consumer protection law and they're on your side if you're a consumer. I read also EU's 1999/44 which also sets the consumer laws in EU region. Even though the Sony's warranty statements says "Rooting avoids the warranty" (in Finland) they can't withdraw their vendor's liability. So what does this mean? It means that they have to show that you caused the issue in the first place in order to get out of the responsibility.

I firstly contacted Verkkokauppa.com where I bought the phone from and they said it should be repaired under the warranty repair if the modification (Sailfish OS) didn't cause the problem. Well, I contacted their repair shop Mobylife which arrogantly just stated that they wouldn't repair the phone under the warranty due to the modifications. After that I contacted directly to Sony but they also just answered with vague answers. So I contacted to Verkkokauppa.com again that nor Mobylife or Sony would repair the phone. After this Verkkokauppa.com stated that I would take the phone to their service point and they would send the phone in the service (like doing reclamation service). Well they sent it and we discussed about the subject; Mobylife charges 35€ to find out what caused the issue and you pay this if you've caused it. If not, they'll have to repair the phone under the warranty repair (vendor's liability).

Yesterday I found out by finding the repair work with IMEI code that they've changed PCB / motherboard in the service work. Today I got a message that I could pick up the phone in Verkkokauppa.com's store. I haven't picked it up yet but I really hope that it works but it also seems that they didn't find anything that I would've caused to the phone. I was afraid of moisture damages since they would've denied the warranty repair instantly. I'm going to update this when I get the phone and see if it's working :)

I really hope that this helps other sailors who are having similar issues or at least issues with the warranty things since this is practical experience from Finland. Please also share your experiences with similar service things

Edit:Picked up the phone in Verkkokauppa.com, a few minutes later found out that the phone wasn't working as it should. Well, now they said that contact reclamation and they'll try to get a new phone or give you money back. Let's see how this settles out.

Edit 2:Picked up the phone in Verkkokauppa.com today 16.8.2018 and Mobylife hadn't even tried to fix anything. They claimed that the phone was working and there was nothing wrong with the upper mic. I could clearly hear that there was something wrong with the mic since the quality was awful and sound was weak/low. Verkkokauppa.com just answered that contact their reclamation service. I did. Still waiting for answers and how this settles out. Maybe I should try XA2 when it arrives :)

Edit 3:I had to put the phone in service for another two times. They changed screen module, aux module and in the fourth time again motherboard / PCB. Verkkokauppa.com stated that they'll give me money back since the phone didn't even boot up anymore.

Edit 4: Finally, after I had got my money back, I bought Xperia XA2

Quite a story!

You're lucky it's the mic that was failing and not the speaker since there is no concievable way rooting or OS change could break the mic... :)

@juiceme, yep. But yet still, it was only the first service time when vendor's liability had to be proven. After that case they had flashed stock Android and Sony's firmware back to the device. Anyway, I should get the money back :D
