I have finally made the switch over to SailfishX and am so far very happy. The biggest issue and sad point for me is the fact that Wire doesn't work despite successfully installing. I can't login and have since found a fair few threads on here discussing it not working. It was the only chat app I'd managed to persuade friends and family to install so I didn't need to use Whatsapp.

Massive shame! And also shame there's no basic Sailfish version but can imagine that's not an easy task (or even possible task??) to embark on.

But anyway, there's enough questions asking for that, my question is, and I know it's a bit subjective, but what is the best alternative I can use on SailfishX? And when I say best, I mean relatively bug free, usable and not likely to hammer my permissions - if open source like Wire then that's a massive tick. I mainly use the messaging and groups and sometimes the calls but don't require video calls.

Fingers crossed sailfish3 will get Wire working again and also give us loads more control on App / Android App permissions.

persuade others? nothing beats delta chat. downside: no video or voice calls. also matrix with riot as client is worth a look with its bridges. more open than wire. wire is far from beeing federated- just as one example why id prefer the two mentioned.

I use Threema on SailfishX and it's working fine. Delta chat would be my second choice.

Cheers, I will probably give Threema a go if it's useable as that seems like a decent swap over from Wire. I seem to get warning about push notifications 'No push service found. Error code: SERVICE_INVALID' then a 'Install/Update' or 'Use Polling' - is that what you do dirksche? Seems to check every 15 mins for any updates.

The problem is with these stuff is to get others to follow in order to make use of them. I can see why Delta Chat appears a good idea on that side but doesn't look like they have an iOS app yet which is what most I'd try to use it with have.

On a separate note, I looked at Signal but was completely put off by the permissions it was asking for, I'd never seen so many required in all my years using Android! Surprised it's so popular.

And thanks Kaktux, I forgot all about Riot, that's a strong potential - will see how well it works.

Just ignore the warning. Push works. By the way don't forget to save a backup of your Threema ID

have a look at this question and answers:

https://together.jolla.com/question/166396/which-social-media-platforms-are-a-good-match-for-sailfishos/

Some of them based on XMPP which even it is not fully implemented (ie chat) on sailfish, it gives you the 1to1 chat, and a nice web interface for everything else.

Since you mentioned open source, movim is open source, you can install your own server and make modifications, or use 2-3 free online servers they run, also friendica, but friendica as far as I checked is more social oriented
