[i18n] German translation for &#34;Top menu&#34;

Hi sailors,

with SFOS 3 we got a new feature called "top menu".

I have a hard time to translate this name into German. For now I settled with "Oberes Menü", which sounds a bit clunky in my taste. There are suggestions to call it "Top Menü", but it just does not feel right to me.

So here is a wiki post in order to suggest and vote for a good translation.

I don't really know how long this should be open for voting, because this is the first time I do this.

One week?
Two weeks?
One month?

It would be nice if we could get some "standard" done for things like this, so the community get's more involved as in just posting some suggestions on pootle.

If it works well, I would like to do it for other translations as well.

This is a good idea!
It's a real pity that Pootle (at least Jolla's version) does not support discussions. In my personal opinion TJC is not very well suited for discussions and issue solving.
But still this is worth a try.

Allthough I tend to be a little elitist about language (bad habit of a linguist ;) ) and I think that many votes alone do not yet make for a good translation (resp. localisation). There might be many 'unqualified' suggestions making the poll a bit noisy and hindering discussion about good candidates.

errm, what about simply "Menü"? From my logic, ambiance menu and quick settings menu have been unified in sfos3 so why not simply mirror that? Or do we have other or more important menues in need of differentiation i am not aware of atm?

How about Schnellzugriffe
which would be roughly equivalent to ~~quick actions~~ quick access.

Rationale:

'Top Menu' actually is quite generic in terms of semantic UI components. And as I have noted elsewhere the English source sometimes itself can be a bit cumbersome. So in this case I'd not feel too obliged to keep close to the original wording.
essentially the new menu is about giving quick access to options and settings available elsewhere, so it's not necessary to give it a name by itself. I don't recall the translations of the old quick actions from Events View but that was something similar I think.

Alternatively there's Globales Menü.

Btw. what's the term on Android or iOS?

@reakolia: hum. the 'menü' seems a bit redundant to me. it does not add much semantic information and the string gets longer.
also it's plural since it's not only one 'schnellzugriff' but multiple such as the ambiences, network, torchlight a.s.o.
I'm not currently using the German locale so I don't know what was decided in the end.

When it's sounds a bit clunky, dann kann man doch eine andere MenüSprache wählen. For me is Oberes Menü ok.

Ich finde "Oberes Menü" ebenfalls besser verständlich. Ok, ich habe auch eine Zeit lang überlegt, ob es sich richtig anfühlt. Trotzdem finde ich Top-Menü noch falscher, da man dann eben nicht gleich weiß, was gemeint ist.

"Top" may be interpreted as "top layer" or "very good". Maybe we should find an own name like Settings Menu, Pull-Down-Menu or Sailfish/Lipstick Menu. Quick Settings/Schnelleinstellungen would also be ok. But I would keep it as it is.

This is a no-go for me. Never seen this term in any similar context ever. Additionally I don't agree that "Top Menü" is such a strong anglicism nowadays (see Duden link in my earlier answer).

I like the idea to find an own name. Sailfish OS is unlike, so we have to find a name for the most important menu in Sailfish OS, which is unlike. "Top menu"...Android has it, does Apple have it? I don't know. But in Sailfish this should be the most smart and swypy thing in the world.

einfach reduziert übersetzen.

Ignore "top" in the translation and call it simply "Menü" instead of "Oberes Menü", "Höchstes Menü", "Oberkantenmenü" or "Deckelmenü". ;-)

I think "Oberes Menü" is the best of the list, if "top" should be translated too.

But applications can have their own menus, too. It would only lead to confusion if they all had the same name, and as soon as you need to specify that you aren't talking about a restaurant's menu or the menu of the browser you're viewing the restaurant's website in, but the menu you get by swiping from the top of the screen, you're back where you started at.

To be honest, I didn't had a look on SFOS 3 so far.

But looking at the mere wording, I would rather go with "Top Menü". The other suggestion "Oberes Menü" sounds like over-translating here to me. "Top" is in several ways a valid german word according to the Duden (https://www.duden.de/suchen/dudenonline/top), even though not mentined for the literal translation to "Upper"="Oberes".

Saying this, we don't get a literal translation by "Oberes Menü", which would be - like it was mentioned before by others - "Upper Menu".

Might be interesting to delimit the "top menu" to any other menu level in terms of the new overall menu structure. So this might bring up a different, even better approach here to refelct the top level. As said without a closer look to SFOS 3, I don't have a suggestion at hand yet.

"Top Menü" is not possible, it's wrong. You could call it "Top-Menü" though.

@inta, as you are very strict here, could you provide a link to this rule? To me (personally!) this wouldn't look wrong even without the hyphen.

Compositions do not have spaces. That is quite a basic german grammar rule and described in more detail and with references here: https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leerzeichen_in_Komposita (there are valid exceptions, but more or less only for proper names)

@inta, @zackbuffo: while you both are not wrong in a technical sense I think you have the wrong approach.
Translation/localisation is not so much about refering to a lexicon ( one could argue if Duden is a good reference in this situations) or grammar. But you rather have to consider the usage context (Smartphone UI) and semantics (menu to quickly access a lot of actions/settings).

I'd suggest to look for terms that express this meaning in a concise and unambiguous way instead of focusing too much on keeping the wording of the source.

Spelling and grammar should be correct, I see no reason not to stick with that. I personally do not like "Top-Menü" as translation, but I am ok with it as long as it is spelled correct. That's all I wanted to point out here, that was not meant as offense or argument against this answer.

I think in functionalities therefore I would it call "Kurzmenü", because your'e able to set something in a short way.

Deutsche Sprache ist sperrig schön. In den Einstellungen habe ich "Oberes Menü" sofort verstanden. Warum immer Sprachen mischen? "Top Menü" klingt gekrampft und nach Tagesordnungspunkt. Lasst es wie es ist.

Kurz ist gut. Also "Top-Menü"! Wegen merkwürdigen zwangseingedeutschten Begriffen nutze ich meist Englisch.

Verstanden hab ich es auch. :) Man gewöhnt sich ja an alles. Ich gehöre eigentlich auch der Fraktion an nicht alles Germlish zu gestalten. Oberes Menü klingt halt einfach etwas seltsam

That doesn't cover the whole package. Quick settings are most of it, but you also get the button to lock the screen, and locking the screen isn't a setting. You can also put shortcuts to different pages (in the Settings application, granted) in there, and I wouldn't consider those to be quick settings either.

Another suggestion: "Hauptmenü"

(Which also doesn't fit literally. This would be "Main menu".)
