I have a rather annoying problem with my Xperia XA2 (3.0.0.8):

From time to time the phone calls can be established, but neither I hear what the person on the other end says nor does the other person hear me. The phone is not manually muted (when screen is on during calls, the button is off). It doesn't matter whether I am called or whether I establish the call. It happens in any ambience, so the quiet ambience seems to be not the problem. Only thing that helps so far is rebooting the phone. Then I can make calls like expected again, until at some point the issue pops up again.

Edit 2019-02-12: Happens to me too every now and then, I noticed that if I use headphones (plugged in), the call audio works, but without the headphones the call is muted. So it seems to be an issue routing the audio to the speaker correctly.

Edit 2019-02-21: Duplicate of https://together.jolla.com/question/161016/bug-no-sound-during-call/

Edit 2019-02-21: @raketti I don't think it is a duplicate, as the thread owner of the other thread only says that he/she can't hear anything (except when loudspeaker turned on, and reproducably), but this thread is about non-reproducable muted calls on both ends.

I too have experienced this problem with my XA2. Yesterday a phone conversation was cut off three times during the 20 minute call. Also I tried to continue both as caller and as recipient but had the problem in both situations.

This sometimes happens to me when my XA2 was previously connected to my Volvo Car via Bluetooth. I think it fails to switch back to it's internal speaker/mic automatically. Rebooting fixes this, but recently I also managed to switch speakers from within the call-screen (might have been introduced with the last update, not sure).

I just had the same problem now, I wasn't able to hear a call for the last half day. No sound on both ends. I tried multiple reboots without success. Now, the twentieth or so reboot has helped. This is a show stopper for usimg the phone.

Specially given your edit of 2019-02-12, regarding wired a headset always working.

Try cleaning (compressed air, gently rubbing with some cleaning device like a cottonswab/Q-tip, or extremely gently rubbing with some rigid object like a wooden [ = non conducting ] toothpick. Do not use a conducting object like a pocket knife's metal pick to avoid shorts. Do not rub to strongly to avoid bending the contacts) any lint that might be caught at the bottom of the audio jack and which might be confusing the plug-in detection.

Such "no sound" problems might be an actual bug in the audio routing (pulse audio not correctly activating the right output it supposed to), but might as well be just lint pushing on the plug detection trigger and making the phone think that there's a "ghost" headset plugged in.

I have the same problem . If i unplug headphones, then make a call. I have to put the call on speaker and back to handset before I can hear anything

There will be a fix for the audio problems of XA2 in the upcoming Sailfish release 3.3.0.

This problem is NOT fixed in 3.3.0.14. I have this problem with the Xperia 10 (but not with the XA2, see Phone calls muted at both ends [Xperia 10], can't make calls

AkiBerlin ( 2020-04-07 17:06:14 +0300 )edit

Is your problem temporary or permanent?

Sebix ( 2020-04-07 21:14:03 +0300 )edit

@AkiBerlin: the issue was reported on XA2 and fixed for XA2 (mentioned this in the release notes). Xperia 10 has a different audio system, so it must be dealt with differently. Deserves a separate report [1], too, or else it is hard to read and understand all different comments, or declare somthing fixed if the same report covers too wide an area.

So far, we have not been able to reproduce the issue on Xperia 10. But we will keep trying.

It would be valuable to get the feedback if 3.3.0.14 works on Xperai XA2 devices correctly, what comes to this voice call issue.

jovirkku ( 2020-04-08 12:39:06 +0300 )edit

I had no problems on XA2 with 3.3.0.14 so far. I had this problem a year ago, but it is fixed since then.

This issue, concerning XA2 products, should be fixed in Sailfish OS release 3.3.0.16.

If you have a similar problem with Xperia 10, please report here: https://together.jolla.com/question/223732/bug33014-phone-calls-muted-at-both-ends-xperia-10-cant-make-calls/

It also happened to me even with 3.3.0.16 on my XA2, after restarting the phone it worked again.

XA2 dual SIM, same problem with the update to 3.3.0.x. Problem appears during calls only, everything else works okay (Radio streaming apps, Android apps for calling or music). Phone calls ring normally, I pick up and I hear nothing, and the other side can't hear me either. It doesn't make a difference if I place the call or I receive the call. Something is broken with this update. It is definately broken with 3.3.0.16 but probably was also with 3.3.0.14. So basically the phone doesn't work as a phone.... Speaker, loudspeaker or headphones makes no difference, phone calls are always muted and the other party cannot hear me.

This issue has not been fixed in recent release. In fact, for the XA2 of my wife, this issue started with this release 3.3.0.16. She's never had that problem before.

Amboss ( 2020-05-04 16:22:13 +0300 )edit

The issue happened here with my XA2 (H4113) after installing 3.3.0.16. Fixed with 'pkcon install droid-config-hXXXX-pulseaudio-settings' and reboot. Only reboot was not sufficient. I had no issues with playing audio or WhatsApp calls.

simosays ( 2020-05-10 14:21:00 +0300 )edit

Same here with H3113 after installing 3.3.0.16. Installing the settings according to simosays post helped.

This is not a duplicate. This is a problem with Xperia XA2 and SFOS 3.x and not with an outdated version from 2017. So I reopened this report again.

Just out of curiosity. I had another problem where all audio disappeared. I was also getting intermittent audio death on calls.

After following the instructions provided by @Chris_ all my audio issues seem to have disappeared at once. Including patchy audio and phone calls being quiet sometimes. https://together.jolla.com/question/213682/xa2-can-someone-please-upload-pulseaudio-configuration-files-answered/

I just deleted the /etc/pulse/ folder then

pkcon install droid-config-hXXXX-pulseaudio

pkcon install droid-config-hXXXX-bluez5

reboot

hXXXX is the phone model

Just ran onto this with Nuksio (3.2.1.20) and XA2 (H4113). Phone worked fine, then suddenly didn't (and I didn't really do anything in between). No call audio to either direction - all else worked fine (notifications, media etc all ok, just calls muted to both directions). Worst part being that this time reboot didn't do anything. Neither did connecting/disconnecting headphones or bluetooth headset (actually, neither of those received any call audio either, all else again ok)

I've had some random issues before with single call being mute, but this was far more persistent than anything before.

'pkcon install droid-config-hXXXX-pulseaudio-settings' fixed this (for now?), though.
