Hello Sailors!

I stumbled across Picross in Jolla Store a year back, but it didn't work at all. At some point a fatal bug had slipped in the release version, or something, but there was a patch for it already. I tested it and it worked - and I liked the game, too. I decided to fix the application properly and publish it, and ended up rewriting some parts of it.

This gave me an idea; are there any other community-provided applications that you would like to use, but are no longer maintained? Submit your suggestions in answers, and I see what I can do :)

Edit: This question was inspired by Sailfish Devember, so make sure you check out that, too!

Edit: Translators are always needed! Many of the projects I picked up are not quite up to date... Please consider helping the community by translating a few applications if you can spare an hour or two.

How are the projects progressing, you ask? First the more active ones:

  • GPSInfo
    • Mostly done for now at least
    • Bar chart component may have to be re-implemented (without qcharts.js...)
  • YTplayer
    • Uses custom-made "youtube-dl-lite" for speed
(It means youtube-dl script execution kind of speed, not download faster speed :)
  • Battery Buddy
    • Finally supports automatically pausing/resuming charging the battery!
    • Landscape orientation support
    • No longer Jolla Store compatible; only from OpenRepos from now on

Then the ones that haven't had much attention lately, but forgotten they are not, trust me:

  • CarBudget: Pushed layout fixes to condo4, hopefully he still updates the app... (11.2.2019)
  • SailKino: major UI rework done and released (25.2.2019)
  • CountMe 2: Screen blanking prevention added. (12.2.2019)
  • Picross 2: Updated welcome screen, translations added. (12.2.2019)

The future of these ones is unclear to me (but you can help, too):

  • Daedalus: It compiled and ran almost out-of-the box!
  • SMPC: Not started yet.
  • PhoneHook: Not started yet, but definitely on my list :)
  • Call Flasher: In consideration. It may be possible, but the results may be poor. Looking at it later this year.
  • Squeeze UI: In consideration. It's hard to test this, as I don't have a Squeebox... https://openrepos.net/content/pawelspoon/squeeze-ui-remote-ps
  • File Browser (although it is not abandoned): I am implementing support for other applications to open files and folders in the application. Serious nerd snipe at the moment! Need to learn D-Bus first...
  • Swipe URL in browser toolbar right/left in order to go back/forward - updated to latest sailfish, forked, with pull request, also released on OpenRepos

Even abondend apps on OpenRepos that with some TLC may find their way in the Jolla store?

I miss "Daily Comics" from tardypad on OpenRepos: https://openrepos.net/content/tardypad/daily-comics

Code is here:

https://github.com/tardypad/sailfishos-daily-comics

And maybe you can improve it by enabling users to edit and fix the comics definitions/urls.

Daedalus Musicplayer: https://openrepos.net/content/djselbeck/daedalus-musicplayer

In my eyes the best player for SailfishOS, but unfortunately no longer able to get/display album information since Sailfish 2.1.4.14

CuteSpot stopped to work for me some time ago. Don't know what's the current status as I stopped my use of Spotify (mainly because it stopped working on Sailfish ...)

Sporify on Sailfish is a big can of worms, plus there are talented minds working on it already.

Having said that, Spotify on Alien Dalvik is broken ATM, so I can't use Spotify at all on mobile.

Try with Hutspot, working okay for me.

It seems it's not on OpenRepos nor on Jolla Store yet. https://github.com/sailfish-spotify/hutspot

Actually no developer can do something, as spotify just closed their API - we have to wait until spotify publishes a new one.

Had a quick look at it. A simple recompile fixes the daemon crashes. Only thing I do not see working is the restore of the previous ambience (but general profile is restored).

adekker ( 2018-12-23 12:37:43 +0300 )edit

@adekker Could you maybe upload your build somewhere? I have the feeling the original developer is not interesting in providing new builds.

@adekker thanks so much! Do you know whether its possible to start the daemon upon boot e.g. via systemctl or a custom rc.local file which I already have set up?

bomo ( 2018-12-30 12:54:16 +0300 )edit

This is the openrepos version, which already has an autostart for the daemon build in. Better reboot the phone after installation, so the daemon gets properly replaced.

Meerun still installs and runs fine under SailfishOS 2.2.1 (and presumably 3.0.0, too).
To install it, one has to have zypper installed (e.g., per pkcon install zypper as root) and follow the little guide in Meerun's comments on OpenRepos (the ssu re is superfluous and can be omitted).

While Meerun has been a great multi-platform app (for Android, SailfishOS), it has been abandoned two years ago and is superseded by Laufhelden on SailfishOS.
IMO efforts shall rather be directed at enhancing Laufhelden than resurrecting Meerun for SailfishOS.

olf ( 2018-12-22 18:24:14 +0300 )edit

Thank you for this information. I managed to install both programs. Hopefully there will be more sports in Laufhelden.

jklmlk ( 2018-12-22 21:26:44 +0300 )edit

You may make suggestions and discuss them at https://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?t=100052
If you have a specific request, you may pose it at https://github.com/jdrescher2006/Laufhelden/issues
Hoping for something you have not asked for often turns out to be futile, because nobody (except you) knows about it.

I can't work on heart rate measurement in either program. Meerun crashes to add sensors. Laufhelden shows zero value at heart rate. I have two sensors, Suunto Smart sensor and sport tracker hrm2.

jklmlk ( 2018-12-25 20:24:49 +0300 )edit

@jklmlk, again:

  • For issues with Laufhelden, use one of the links I provided above to report them.
A simple "Does not work" report without further analysis rather ought to be discussed at TMO.
The Laufhelden community, especially its author and maintainer @jdrescher most likely do not read your comments here at TJC.
  • Meerun is unmaintained, thus unsupported.

I didn't even know someone ported Kodi :o

As the code base is quite old by now, it would make more sense to just take the current Kodi 18 RC4 and try to make it work. I am quite busy at the moment, but maybe some point next year...

Direc ( 2018-12-31 11:05:02 +0300 )edit

@Direc this is one of the apps missing the required functionalities that if present I would drop android support on my Jolla phone. You should know the two majors bugs it has when recoding it, the screen goes blank after sometime the same setting as in display setting in the phone, making it impossible to use as you need to touch the screen steadily for it not to go off. The second bug is every media started at max volume, which is very dangerous for earphones usage. There is an inability to return to the kodi main screen while watching pictures, a restart of the app is the only remedy. So please prioritize this app, I will willingly buy you a beer as commitment.

As much as I'd welcome (money for) a beer right now, time is the even more limited resource right now. I'll definitely keep this in app in the list :)

Having Kodi could mean having Netflix and other video services as well. I'm using Netflix on Kodi on my HTPC. (If it weren't for this add-on, I wouldn't have Netflix) There are, of course, stupid limitations because of stupid DRM, most notably the requirement (!) of using a software decoder instead of a hardware decoder. But still better than nothing, especially if you already have a Netflix account anyway.

@Direc thanks for giving me hope, it remains my strongest weapon. That beer will definitely be a promise. @Fuzzillogic I had even completely forgotten about add-on , truly this app is a must for sailfish, it would definitely solve this lack of native app we have, covering a wide range of video players.

QRemoteControl. It still works but has not been updated since 2013, and it's still the best WiFi remote we have (and, in my opinion, the best even when including Android alternatives). It even features a touchpad and keyboard. I would love to see other maintainers for that, especially since the desktop server app is now outdated and has to be fiddled with to install on some Linux distributions (I did it, it works, but it is inconvenient and many won't bother with this and therefore think the Sailfish app is useless).

You might want to have a look at KDE Connect. It comes standard with KDE Plasma, but there also is a Gnome variant. There currently are two native apps for Sailfish, as well as the official Android app.

Fuzzillogic ( 2019-01-06 03:50:25 +0300 )edit

Thanks @Fuzzyllogic. I know about the two native apps and I love them (I have yet to find which one is the best, seems that SailfishConnect now has more plugins) but last time I checked, the remote control was nowhere as complete as QRemoteControl's. QRemoteControl's offers a full remote with more than just Play/Pause, there's also all media keys (volume, full screen, mute, previous/next, seek forward/backward, etc.). It also features a touchpad more complete than KDEConnect's as there is support for left click, right click, middle click, and both horizontal and vertical scroll. Finally, there is also a full keyboard with all the keys, in addition to the native Sailfish keyboard, which is very useful for adjusting audio/video sync or subtitles sync without moving from the couch for instance.

It is very lightweight and completely multi-platform (however, the server app is built on old librairies and I needed to tweak it a little to compile it, and I needed help to do that, won't be able to do it again alone). I think KDEConnect is more limited, not sure if it provides full support for Windows and Mac for instance. Maybe the browser extension does work on all OSes though, but I only have Linux so I cannot test.

Don't get me wrong, KDEConnect has many features to love and I am eagerly looking forward to the moment the KDEConnectIndicator available on my distribution (Solus Budgie) will have support for sending and receiving texts from the computer. This is the one feature I want the most with KDEConnect and unfortunately I don't have it on my distribution, but no doubt more popular distributions have it already, and SailfishConnect seems to have the plugin too. However, on the WiFi remote control topic, I still think QRemoteControl does the best job. It's also very UNIX-friendly with the one function one application spirit.

Sailimgur

Its an app for the social media website Imgur. I like the app very much and compared to the original android app it is superb in every way. But for quite some time the problems are adding up: since short videos are not mainly gifs anymore very often the single posts of imgur won't load at all or can crash the app. big gifs crash the app, videos with sounds are silent etc. etc...

Similar to this app is Gagbook for the 9Gag page, basically the same content while Imgur is usually more original and more US centered 9Gag is more international. But lately the 9Gag app has been adopted too and now it works very good and often i use this to look at the same content that sailimgur fails to show correctly.

I guess looking into the media-playing section should give some indication last update was 2016 and considering the changes we had in SFOS since then I think its needed to link maybe the actual libs to the code again.

The best case is that recompiling the app fixes a bunch... I'll have a quick look at it at some point.

Does someone know if Sailfish has webp support?

Direc ( 2018-12-20 16:34:23 +0300 )edit

Hi @Direc, sorry for late reply but somehow I just now realized that I can answer this question myself: I tried this link https://developers.google.com/speed/webp/gallery1 which is an example gallery from google. In my current Firefox on my computer I can't see the webp pictures therefore also not in the Sailfish Browser. But if you download the file you can just normally open it in the gallery and see it. SO as long as you can use the same mechanisms as the gallery the app might view also these pictures.

A lot of Dropbox functionality is covered with existing file browsers, or the SFOS share DropBox plugin. What extra DB functionality is missing?

I use File Browser 1.7.3 from the official store, and I don't have any Dropbox integration in it. Which file browsers include Dropbox integration?

The main feature that I miss is being able to browse the files in my Dropbox and generate a share URL that I can easily copy/paste to send via email.

Battery notifier 2

Up to now this has been the only native app, with which one can effectively

  • set an upper charging limit, at which the device automatically stops charging
  • set an arbitrary lower limit as a threshold for extra intensive acoustic warnings
  • settings and functionality persists over GUI (Lipstick) restarts and reboots (i.e., it autostarts when booting)

But unfortunately it does not work at all on Xperias.
It might have additionally stopped working on all devices since SailfishOS 3.

If the code turns out to be hard to maintain, the resources at TJC mentioned in Battery notifier 2's version history at OpenRepos might be helpful to enhance a similar utility (e.g. Battery Buddy) to include Battery notifier 2's essential functionality: automatically stopping to charge at a freely chosen battery level.

P.S.: Its source code is (only, AFAICS) the script files (QML) in the RPMs at OpenRepos.
