Im thinking same. I like my Xperia x. My bank just don't like old android on this machine. I'd love to use banking apps with my phone. I would be more than happy for Android 8.1 support.

Copy from other question:

Staying still with Xperia X as waiting for update of Android support to 5 - 7 from 4.4.4. I'm very interested in to know whether the android support of 8.1 for XA2 is enabling the use of Galaxy Wearables app from Aptoide? I thank you for the answer. This will show if there is any sense to wait for anything with sfos anymore.

Banking apps also checks if phone is rooted or unlocked, and therefore do not run, because this enviroment is not secure enough.

Android 4 support is very much tied to the current system. Android 8 would need a different underlying system and most probably require a reflash. You can ofcourse guess that after one year of use, not everyone will want a reflash. That would give 2 streams of Sailfisf X in the wild, people on the original system, and people on the new reflash. Jolla is not big enough to support both systems going forward. Someone here will feel the cold and a hard decision has to be made.

Everyone has already flashed their device to get Sailfish onto their device. If it means reflashing to get better functionality I'm willing to bet they would flash again in a heartbeat. Those that don't wish to flash still have a stable OS which may or may not be updated.

in my opinion it is completly ignorant to everybody who paid money to flash their xperia x to sailfish. i have a 2017 hardware with androidsupport on the 2013 level and now i have to buy newer hardware to get this upgrade. xperia x runs oreo. why do i need to buy a new phone? i paid 50€ for an old kernel and kitkat and now i can't even upgrade to a newer androidversion. im pretty sure most of the sailfishdevices are xperia x. again, after beeing loyal since the very beginning i can't get how i as a custumer am treated by jolla hq. since i flashed my phone i hope on every single update that we could have at least android 5 or 6 support. and now they tell me it won't happen. I don't get it. u work with sony, right? why u don't at least upgrade the kernel? my tablet crowdfound was an fuckup, i didn't get why u made toh obsolete, lost a bunch of great community members with this move who had build nice oth like kbdoh and now after everybody waiting for 16 months to get a newer androidversion jolla tells us: nope! spend another 250€ for a even bigger phone and install your beta for 30€. i would never treat my clients like this.

I understand your disappointment, believe me I was angry too. But noone should forget, that this company doesn't have the resources to fulfill everyones needs and wishes. Maybe updating the Xperia X Android compability layer would mean, that other vital parts of the os can't be worked on. Having said that, the only solution is Jolla being clear and open about what is going on. Last year, when Sailfish 3 was announced, not only should have been made clear, that Sailfish 3 will be intially released with not all announced feautures, but Jolla should have also said, that they are only working on an upgraded Android version for the XA2. Most people are willing to forgive missing features and missed deadlines, but only if we know what is going on! Please Jolla, reconsider your communication practice, if you rely on the community, you have to make sure the community is informed. Also, if you know a deadline is going to be missed, share the information officially, not when the deadline has passed, but when additional problems have been discovered.

I have to disagree about the Sailfish OS 3 messaging/marketing - that was really botched. When they showed the roadmap in early 2018, it looked really ambitious - but that was just what was needed to revitalize Sailfish OS!

And there really were no clear indicators it's just a plan what Sailfish OS 3 should have once done, so no wonder people feel something was promised and not delivered in the initial release.

honestly, in this case they should shut down. if u haven't the resources to keep one single promise to your customers, go f°°k yourself. if there was any respect for customers who bought sony hardware to use their os they would understand that it is vital to at least give them a working environment. why no newer kernel? why forcing people to buy sony hardware every 12month? please enlighten me.. i have a working hexacore mobile and i should dump it for an unstable os in beta to use what was advertised: androidsupport! no thx. im here giving money to jolla since the early beginnings and i know enough about coding to understand that it is work to make this stuff working. but: if i tell someone he will have updates for at least one year and i only give him optical stuff instead of an actual kernel or a higher androidversion it is pretty close to scam in my humble opinion. wouldn't have bought any xperia x if i had knew that it will stay on fucking kitkat. im pissed. why not giving the clients that allready invested money and their time to jollas product a higher version of android first? they even dont earn any money by forcing us to upgrade the hardware. give me one single reason. i feel like they are sabotageing their own company at any possible moment. snailfish3 was nothing beside optical stuff. if they want to compete they have to deliver. otherwise the market will kill em. if u have customers even giving u vital feedback like here at together u should see this as an asset instead of pissing of the early adopters every possible time.... why not providing fairphone with android 8? why not xperia x or already existing hardware? why forcing peeps to buy a newer phone even not produced from jolla. thats crazy stupid. i would have paid 30 bugs for a newer androidversion. i bopught my jollas tablet twice. but now im left behind after waiting for years. no thank you. srsly

@toba: man sure you have reason to be angry. I wasn't very happy to learn of the killed-off update to AlienDalvik. In fact I'm hugely disappointed.
But, come on walk a mile in their shoes! It's not easy to keep alive a business like Jollal's based on a niche OS only enthusiasts know about, left alone are willing to pay for it. So it's logical they are going for corporate contracts as they did in the past year. To sustain a company that otherwise would have had to shut down. 50€ per license won't get you far, given that the numbers of sold ones are at the mentioned enthusiats level.

Jolla has been very unfortunate with their communication choices. They should have made clear, that for 2018 and SFOS 3.0 the focus lies on corporate customers and supporting the XA2 will be the only real update on the private customers end.

But apart from that, ranting all over the place will neither help you nor change the situation. It will just dampen the mood here at TJC further.

Btw. I think that most peple misunderstand the role of the community for Jolla and also the company direly needs to reestablish a clear relationship. There is an old study that kind of explains Jollas 'imperviosity' to feedback: Research on Together community

i walked beside them since they exist. never was ranting like this. not even after the tabletfuckup. but waiting a year long for kernel updates und finally being left behind just tells me to turn away. if u develop an alternative os u rely on your users, espacially on those willing to pay for it. i was such one. now i have a nonupdated device with kitkat on it. great. why should u roll out an update that relevant only on hardware barely anyone of ur customers uses yet? in beta? for 30€? common, if u are a coder, u know it takes time and manpower to write all needed drivers etc... but if u just want to use an os not from google or apple, u learn to flash ur phone etc and u buy it with the promise to have also relevant updates, u r pissed. nobody following this development from a market side will understand it. u have clients with hardware and now u only upgrade hardware mostly none of them is using. its stupid. u will loose more customers then winning... next financiating round numbers will be worst, so even less money to develop... won't work like this, pretty sure.

Question 13 on FAQ:

13. The Android app support of Xperia X is based on version 4.4.4 now. Will you update the Android support of Xperia X devices? UPDATED: 26/03/2019 The Android App Support in Sailfish OS upgrade from Android 4.4.4 apps to Android 8.1 apps is a major architectural rework, and depends on a whole new hardware adaptation software (aka baseport) based on Android 8. The Sailfish OS hardware adaptation for Xperia X devices is based on Android 6 baseport, which as such is incompatible with the our new Android App Support.

With Jolla’s very limited resources, we have the chance to work on either one at a time, and we chose to develop and maturize the new Android 8.1 app support in Xperia XA2 product range. As stated earlier we will look into whether supporting other Sailfish devices (like Xperia X) is feasible only after we’ve got the support in XA2 in good enough maturity level and well stabilized. Also, please note that as communicated we will continue providing Sailfish OS updates for Xperia X, and the above concerns only the Android App Support functionality.source: https://jolla.com/sailfishx/

Oh, well, it's disappointing. I's been more than a year since Sailfish X release. Xperia X adaptation is still alpha quality with lots of bugs and it's already considered deprecated.

Still a missed opportunity, as they would be able to embrace so many more users/devices. The Sony Open Device program is not limiting them either:

2018-10-11: Update of AOSP Oreo binaries (Android 8.1 – Kernel 4.4) for:

  • Xperia XA2, Xperia XA2 Ultra and Xperia XA2 Plus (Nile)
  • Xperia XZ Premium, Xperia XZ1 and Xperia XZ1 Compact (Yoshino)
  • Xperia XZ, Xperia XZs and Xperia X Performance (Tone)
  • Xperia X and Xperia X Compact (Loire)

While I am also disappointed in having to change (downgrade?) my device to go beyond 4.4.4, keep in mind that this means changing the Android runtime running under SailfishOS from Dalvik to ART, which is a really really big issue, not just upgrading the kernel and the Android installation.

No, only to the XA2 series. For the Xperia X the possibility of upgrading Dalvik to Android 7 level is under review. Please use the search function (e.g. "sailfish 3 android") for the primary sources in this forum.

So what Android upgrade will the Xperia X be getting?

I for one am extremely disappointing there is no pathway to Android 8 or failing that any concrete information on an upgrade to the present Android 4.4 support, particularly considering how recently Sailfish X was released to the market for the Xperia X. Until a very few months ago when Sailfish 3 was released, the Xperia X was the latest phone you could put Sailfish onto and for Jolla to appear to have abandoned it so soon is very concerning.

I know Jolla is a very small company but the development output appears to be minute with no real progress on improving functionality or fixing bugs. We don't need new ambiences etc we need better functionality( calling groups, be able to forward SMS message, better Bluetooth support) and bugs fixed (get MS Exchange working reliably, get the weather app to integrate properly).

If Jolla are to retain and grow their enthusiastic band of followers in my opinion they need to do much better with the OS development.

Why? Xperia X got already Android 8.0 and there's AOSP 8.1 so it's cleary not a hw problem.

I actually have a plan. Sailfish X can install qemu and use qemu-system-i386 to boot the android_x86 image then create the qcow2 virtual disk. Unfortunately X windows server won't run on sailfish os because it's using Lipstic so VNC instead X windows. I can run Windows XP 32bit and ReactOS 32bit on my XpX. I use VNC Viewer app running on aliendalvik to connect to localhost:5900 VNC local server. Also maximum possible RAM to be allocated about 2GB and working virtual network adapter.

The jolla doesn't care about this.Because I ran the OS on virtualization software. The performance and hardware access are the way less that aliendalvik.also long time booting and can't be use while multi-tasking.

The situation by the end of July 2019:

  • Any Sailfish phone without Android apps is pretty much useless
  • Android apps are already dropping their support for older Android versions
  • Sony Xperia XA2 is already an "out-of-the-market" product

So, what options do we have left ?!?

Perhaps, but I'm pointing my post more to Jolla itself.

The FAQ says about upgrading Android for other devices:

"we will look into whether supporting other Sailfish devices (like Xperia X) is feasible only after we’ve got the support in XA2 in good enough maturity level and well stabilized".

And the latest release notes states:

"this update brings Sailfish X for Xperia XA2 officially out of beta"

Well, isn't it time for Jolla to actually look in to this ?

I too would like to see a baseport re-write/Android upgrade to the Xperia X since, at the time I bought it and the Sailfish X license, it was being advertised as the much-awaited (and sole) upgrade path from the Jolla 1. As for the future, I think an official port to either the PinePhone or Librem 5 makes the most sense, even if the display sizes are larger than what I'd like.

Supporting Android 5 and 9 is exactly the same thing for Jolla (if the HAL allows).

It would be interesting to discover/understand what Android runtime Jolla has put in XA2. For J1/C/X they went for Myriad Aliendalvik, and that was also the price to pay for SailfishX. I think they moved to a different solution on XA2, the beta branding and the free download could confirm this. Maybe somebody could backport the solution to X, WRT the kernel capabilities of the device.
