I understand your disappointment, believe me I was angry too. But noone should forget, that this company doesn't have the resources to fulfill everyones needs and wishes. Maybe updating the Xperia X Android compability layer would mean, that other vital parts of the os can't be worked on. Having said that, the only solution is Jolla being clear and open about what is going on. Last year, when Sailfish 3 was announced, not only should have been made clear, that Sailfish 3 will be intially released with not all announced feautures, but Jolla should have also said, that they are only working on an upgraded Android version for the XA2. Most people are willing to forgive missing features and missed deadlines, but only if we know what is going on! Please Jolla, reconsider your communication practice, if you rely on the community, you have to make sure the community is informed. Also, if you know a deadline is going to be missed, share the information officially, not when the deadline has passed, but when additional problems have been discovered.
bkos ( 2019-02-02 13:45:15 +0200 )editI have to disagree about the Sailfish OS 3 messaging/marketing - that was really botched. When they showed the roadmap in early 2018, it looked really ambitious - but that was just what was needed to revitalize Sailfish OS!
And there really were no clear indicators it's just a plan what Sailfish OS 3 should have once done, so no wonder people feel something was promised and not delivered in the initial release.
MartinK ( 2019-02-02 14:20:15 +0200 )edithonestly, in this case they should shut down. if u haven't the resources to keep one single promise to your customers, go f°°k yourself. if there was any respect for customers who bought sony hardware to use their os they would understand that it is vital to at least give them a working environment. why no newer kernel? why forcing people to buy sony hardware every 12month? please enlighten me.. i have a working hexacore mobile and i should dump it for an unstable os in beta to use what was advertised: androidsupport! no thx. im here giving money to jolla since the early beginnings and i know enough about coding to understand that it is work to make this stuff working. but: if i tell someone he will have updates for at least one year and i only give him optical stuff instead of an actual kernel or a higher androidversion it is pretty close to scam in my humble opinion. wouldn't have bought any xperia x if i had knew that it will stay on fucking kitkat. im pissed. why not giving the clients that allready invested money and their time to jollas product a higher version of android first? they even dont earn any money by forcing us to upgrade the hardware. give me one single reason. i feel like they are sabotageing their own company at any possible moment. snailfish3 was nothing beside optical stuff. if they want to compete they have to deliver. otherwise the market will kill em. if u have customers even giving u vital feedback like here at together u should see this as an asset instead of pissing of the early adopters every possible time.... why not providing fairphone with android 8? why not xperia x or already existing hardware? why forcing peeps to buy a newer phone even not produced from jolla. thats crazy stupid. i would have paid 30 bugs for a newer androidversion. i bopught my jollas tablet twice. but now im left behind after waiting for years. no thank you. srsly
toba ( 2019-02-02 18:41:26 +0200 )edit@toba: man sure you have reason to be angry. I wasn't very happy to learn of the killed-off update to AlienDalvik. In fact I'm hugely disappointed.
But, come on walk a mile in their shoes! It's not easy to keep alive a business like Jollal's based on a niche OS only enthusiasts know about, left alone are willing to pay for it. So it's logical they are going for corporate contracts as they did in the past year. To sustain a company that otherwise would have had to shut down. 50€ per license won't get you far, given that the numbers of sold ones are at the mentioned enthusiats level.
Jolla has been very unfortunate with their communication choices. They should have made clear, that for 2018 and SFOS 3.0 the focus lies on corporate customers and supporting the XA2 will be the only real update on the private customers end.
But apart from that, ranting all over the place will neither help you nor change the situation. It will just dampen the mood here at TJC further.
Btw. I think that most peple misunderstand the role of the community for Jolla and also the company direly needs to reestablish a clear relationship. There is an old study that kind of explains Jollas 'imperviosity' to feedback: Research on Together community
rozgwi ( 2019-02-02 23:41:13 +0200 )editi walked beside them since they exist. never was ranting like this. not even after the tabletfuckup. but waiting a year long for kernel updates und finally being left behind just tells me to turn away. if u develop an alternative os u rely on your users, espacially on those willing to pay for it. i was such one. now i have a nonupdated device with kitkat on it. great. why should u roll out an update that relevant only on hardware barely anyone of ur customers uses yet? in beta? for 30€? common, if u are a coder, u know it takes time and manpower to write all needed drivers etc... but if u just want to use an os not from google or apple, u learn to flash ur phone etc and u buy it with the promise to have also relevant updates, u r pissed. nobody following this development from a market side will understand it. u have clients with hardware and now u only upgrade hardware mostly none of them is using. its stupid. u will loose more customers then winning... next financiating round numbers will be worst, so even less money to develop... won't work like this, pretty sure.

Im thinking same. I like my Xperia x. My bank just don't like old android on this machine. I'd love to use banking apps with my phone. I would be more than happy for Android 8.1 support.
sfxman ( 2019-01-31 18:33:58 +0200 )editCopy from other question:
Staying still with Xperia X as waiting for update of Android support to 5 - 7 from 4.4.4. I'm very interested in to know whether the android support of 8.1 for XA2 is enabling the use of Galaxy Wearables app from Aptoide? I thank you for the answer. This will show if there is any sense to wait for anything with sfos anymore.
N9Sailfish ( 2019-01-31 18:38:00 +0200 )editBanking apps also checks if phone is rooted or unlocked, and therefore do not run, because this enviroment is not secure enough.
jsorn ( 2019-01-31 20:48:03 +0200 )editAndroid 4 support is very much tied to the current system. Android 8 would need a different underlying system and most probably require a reflash. You can ofcourse guess that after one year of use, not everyone will want a reflash. That would give 2 streams of Sailfisf X in the wild, people on the original system, and people on the new reflash. Jolla is not big enough to support both systems going forward. Someone here will feel the cold and a hard decision has to be made.
Marcel Pol ( 2019-02-02 12:22:54 +0200 )editEveryone has already flashed their device to get Sailfish onto their device. If it means reflashing to get better functionality I'm willing to bet they would flash again in a heartbeat. Those that don't wish to flash still have a stable OS which may or may not be updated.
