I need the android subsystem for one thing: Open Whisper System's Signal.

On the current setup I cannot use it, as after every Android/AlienDalvik restart the app may be started and is usable for approx 30 sec before the android subsystem freezes. Can only render it responsive again by stopping/restarting the subsystem.

Is this a common issue? How do I fix it?

* EDIT * I recently updated to 3.0.3.10 and the problem persists.

I can confirm this too on my XA2 and it has been around somewhere since 3.0.2.8 update. Not quite sure how is it going on with this issue. I've noticed that it occurs after a reboot when aliendalvik starts for the first time but yet still it's not every time.

Same here with XA2 Dual Sim model.

OK. I interpret the reproduced observations as me encountering a general problem and will thus not reflash, but wait/hope for someone knowledgeable to chime in ...

@Sakke: Is your XA2 single or dual SIM?

I have a dual sim XA2 and noticed this yesterday. I have 3.0.3.10. It does not seem like this did not start on any specific update for me.

Thanks for making this report. :-)

EDIT 1 month on As also reported in other comments, it appears I was prematurely optimistic. During continued use Android apps (Signal) reacquire the observed unresponsiveness shortly after firing them up - THE ISSUE IS NOT SOLVED.

End of EDIT.

I managed to finally look into and ultimately fix this issue.

What was needed for me to get a working Android/alien-dalvik subsystem on my X2A Dual Sim was to reflash the phone using the Android v17B image from Sony and NOT the v16 image - despite the warning to the contrary on the installation page (item 5. here).

I later discovered that it's actually possible to reflash ONLY the vendor image without having to go through a complete reflash (link), but whether that works thus remains untested.

Android subsystem appeared to be working even at Sailfish 3.0.3 (before upgrading to the recent 3.1).

I hope this helps others.

YMMV

Did reflash to v17B today. I have had the exact same issue before. Let's see if this helps!

I have only used v17B and still have had this problem all the time.. Originally installed 3.0.3 beta in the XA2, did the signature spoofing etc stuff, and poof after installing some apps (ending with installation of DJI Go 4, installation "Successful", but the icon I never got) it started to freeze in a minute or two after starting Android, and some Android icons like F-Droid and Aptoide disappeared. Removing Android apps, Android support, anything Android related I could find didn't help, factory reset did. Same after some days, decided to wait for non-beta. 3.1 came, factory reset, install some Android apps, everything fine -until starting to install some Android camera app over mobile network (might have been installing over WLAN until that), installation "Successful" but no icon, and again always freezing after a minute or so. Not other icons missing this time AFAIK. Started updating to 17b but noticed that was the one in my Sailfish update folder already, had never downloaded v16.

So, 17b doesn't seem to be the final answer. After my experiences I suspect it might be related to Android app installation process, maybe incomplete installation that leaves something the Android subsystem tries to finish the next time but jams when trying.

Yeah, seems running 17b AND reinstalling the offending apps seems to help solve the issue.

ixevix ( 2019-08-09 14:20:57 +0300 )edit

Never had <17b and have uninstalled all Android apps and reinstalled Android support, still whatever Android app I install and run will freeze in a minute or two. I'm sure factory reset will (again) resolve it, for a couple of days. Haven't figured out how to delete Android completely enough to avoid factory reset.

Same observation as @tjh - not solved after all. Edited my answer, but do not seem to be able to retract "correctness" icon ...

This issue is mostly due to a huge number of synct contacts from a google account. It should therefore help to either disable contact and sms access for all android apps (through aliendalvik control) and/or to disable google contact sync, remove all contacts and subsequently them as ics files. I did the latter (and made a phone backup subsequently since it requires some handwork) and didn't experience any problems ever since.

And., this question is a dublicate since there are several threads regarding this topic on tjc.

inte ( 2019-08-28 00:53:44 +0300 )edit

Thanks for the input. @inte - links to other questions? Also: I have no configured google account, but cardDav with indeed a large number of contacts. I have installed aliendalvik Control and attempted to disable all contat syncing for all apps individually - to no avail. Freezing continues. Are you telling me I need to reset to factory and try this from the start to have a shot at a usable signal setup?

balin ( 2019-09-09 16:54:12 +0300 )edit

Also using Aliendalvik Control to prevent ALL automated account syncing did not fix it.

balin ( 2019-09-09 17:05:19 +0300 )edit

OK - I can confirm now that deleting the CardDAV/CalDAV account accessing my contacts in the cloud (hundreds) gives me a quite responsive Android subsystem (Signal, Kindle, DB Navigator, Raumfeld App all work). It's, however, at the hefty cost of loosing functionality even more central to general smartphone usage: contact/calendar management. Is there any inkling that Jolla may be tackling this in an upcoming release?

On a just-flashed XA2 i'm having CPU spikes from system_server process (I used Crest to see processes - setting "app only off" with pulley menu). As long as Android Support is activated, system_server process is there, using 90% -100% of CPU, making the phone, especially android apps, lagging, freezing and heating. I tried to unistall and reinstall androd support but it didnt get solved. Then I decide to do a factory reset but nothing changed. Stopping it solves the issue. Can anyone control if behind the freezing issue explained in this thread there is the same process ongoing and using all CPU (system_server)?

I also had this problem. My aliendalvik kept crashing every 20 minutes or so. It actually turned out the root cause did not lie within Android, but actually with sailfish connecting with my memotoo account every 15 minutes. Since I turned this off (changed it to manually) my xa2 is running smoothly. So something to look at: 'accounts' under sailfish settings.

Presumably, AlienDalvik is the first to crash when CPU is having a hard time.
