How to use 'DWD Warnwetter'-App on SFOS?

Fellow sailors,

does someone know, how to use the full version of german app 'Warnwetter' by the german national weatherservice as a full version, after i bought the full version 'in-app' via android?

Background: As a curt ruled in 2017, the DWD is not allowed to offer free informations about the weather as it is a government financed service.

Just to clarify: I don't want a way to pirate the app, i'm looking for a way to get the payed for version running. :)

Does not help, but the reasoning it stupid. Its financed by the tax payers already.

As I see, there is no "Pay-Version" of the DWD App in the Appstore. On Sailfish, you have no Google PlayServices. So its not possible to register the app as "Pay-Version". If there would a Pay-Version APK you can try to download them with the YALP Store and your Google Account Credentials.

I'm also trying to achive this, but couldn't find time to do yet. My way will be using the stripped Google Store from NanoDroid, which allows inApp payments. But as said before, I hv'nt tried it yet.

@Blizzz Yes it's a little bit stupid german law.

Law on the German Weather Service §6

"The German Weather Service charges a fee for the provision of its services."

Only a few informations are free for public (storm-, floodinformation and warnings about radioactive substances in the air (Hello cold war) ).

EU regulations argue this would be a disadvantage to commercial weather service providers, so DWD has to charge for the app as well. Another example how all this exactly does NOT help the consumer by paying a service twice.

Follow this Guide to install MicroG https://together.jolla.com/question/200448/how-to-install-microg-on-xa2-android-81/?answer=200462#post-id-200462. Then install Nanodroid with the Play Store. Then you can buy the app.

Or the other guide to install genuine Google Play Services through Opengapps. It's simpler, more automated process and can be fully done on the phone.

Come on boys, I can't believe it. A lot of dirty hacks to bring G-spyware on your mobiles OR installing illegal software? For what?

Yes, I know. It's a comment and not an answer, but i couldn't see any solution here too.

There is no solution if DWD accepts only in-app purchases provided by Google play store. I asked them insistently for alternative payment methods, but they refused to offer any.

If you are a member of some (voluntary) fire brigade, THW, or any ambulance corps, you may get a license key, too. May be it's time to think of some voluntary service?

All those little damn things you need in your daily driver, the developers of which insist that Play Services are an industry standard like Microsoft Windows was back in the day.

Pls not the same thing every time. SFOS give you a nice generic runtime to play with some Android apps. Nobody told before, that can replace an Android phone, right? Better you talk with all App developers on Google Play to remove all dependencies related to Gapps. This should be the way. And no, Play Services are not an industrial standard, but Android. PS is for making money.

In case you just cam across this post wondering if you can at least get weather-warnings with the free version...

Does the free version work?

Yes and no. While the app runs, it will load data and show you a map with current weather warnings. So it is of some use. You can even add favorite places (just click "ignore" when it complains about push registration failure) and you'll get current warnings when you click on your favorites. But of course without Google Play Services installed, you can't receive push notifications and therefore won't get a warning while the app isn't running.

How to install it?

If you'd like to install in anyway, it can be manually downloaded from DWD (website in German): https://www.dwd.de/DE/leistungen/warnwetterapp/apk/apk_download.html?nn=16102&lsbId=514322

I downloaded it on my PC unzipped, copied it to my XA2 and installed via "File Browser" (first attempt from terminal running 'apkd-install WarnWetterAndroid2.1.apk' failed with "invalid apk...")

For aviation there is another app for registered users which may work (without Google)...

Finally, if you really want to pay or badly need more detailed weather information, then go to www.flugwetter.de and get an account there (it's 79,50Euro/year) it comes with an enhanced version of the DWD Weather app for "free" and includes detailed weather information for aviation: https://www.dwd.de/EN/specialusers/aviation/teaser/news/07_flugwetter_app_android/07_flugwetter_app_android.html

As I'm doing paragliding I might try that and will let you know if it works...

You also could also try to install the app Aurora Store via the F-Droid Android app store. In Aurora Store, you can download and isntall your paid Google Store app after you keyed in your Google Account data. That could also be an option to install your bought DWD Warnwetter app on Sailfish. However, you need a running copy of Sailfish X on your phone.

Looking around on the internet, you can also find "cracked" versions of Warnwetter providing the complete set of features. You have to decide whether it's better to trust Google and use their services, or to install some apk from dubious sources...
