Hi Fellows, do you like "our" calendar app? For me it is the 3rd importend app (after browser and messenger), but if you have to use (at the office) outlook or see the android app "a-calendar" at the mobile of my wife, then you'll know that this kind of calendar, that we use is ..... not that good. There is no chance to see a complett week, no different colours for different events .... The look an feel is ... not easy.

Is there somebody who know a useful app, that looks and work easy, maybe as an android app?? BUT, I was movin' to sailfish because of Microsoft and Google, I don't want to use them here also!

So maybe someone who is able to develop our calendar is reading my wishes and find a way to make it better?!!? Sorry, but I can't help you ... :-((

If there is any workaround until we (you) find a calendar solution/developing, I'll take it!!

Thank you for understanding,

DiveComp

Sadly the app itself is closed source, as you may know. So not so much community driven evolution possible. That being said, the middle ware it is based on is open source and easy to modify. I'm not using Android, so I don't know what you prefer in the other apps that is missing here. Can you give a list of what feature you would like to have ? I've understand that a week view is missing. Or a way to colour events.

Yes, I agree with you, the calendar app could be improved. Besides, there is the problem that you cannot use an android calendar at the moment because aliendalvik does not support it. On Xperia X, however, with the old android version, this has been supported. I really hope that Jolla is enabling this feature in future updates or improving their calendar app. It is a little bit frustrating that the three most important apps, viz. browser, email and calendar, are so halfheartedly taken care of. But whom am I telling this, it has been said many times before.

thanks you so much

what exactly is not supported in Alien Dalvik? I tried to install "simple calendar" from fdroid and I can set events and get notifications. Is CalDAV the problem?

Kekskopf ( 2020-03-05 13:26:40 +0300 )edit

The problem is that the Sailfish calendars (including CalDAV calendars) are not visible under Alien Dalvik, compared to contacts, for instance, which are accessible from both sides.

how about trying calcurse on openrepos calcurse ? Seems a neat calendaring solution, comes with CalDAV support, todo list, and it looks like a lot of fun.

Hey cool, I didn't know that it is available on openrepos. Last time when I've checked, it wasn't. I adore command line tools like, e.g., the taskwarrior for task management, but it might not be the optimal solution for the average user.

Woidboy ( 2020-03-05 18:49:01 +0300 )edit

that's probably true, I for example don't know how I could set up CalDAV syncing. If I could do that, I might step forward to using it..

Hello and thanks for your comments and answers. I will answer and comment in one!

What I really want is a calendar like (as I said) aCalendar, if you take a look at the pics, you'll see a really good calendar! But, as Woidboy said: there is no chance to run an Android calendar app inside of Sailfish OS. But why is there noone at Jolla/Sailfish who would like to improve this wonderful OS to make it more intresting for everybody? I tried nearly every calendar app from Android, nothing works in total.

And please why is this app (as damien said) a close source? Sorry, I am only a poor user, a carpenter who did'nt know anything about programming.

And as an answer to danfin thanks for this idea, but this app will work good on a laptop or PC, but it will be a little bit difficult on a mobil, because of all the "special" signs.

If there is someone who had a workaround in petto ... let us know.

Thanks

If the developper grants access to the program code and allows to take and modify it it is called open source, in contrast to closed source, where only the compiled binaries are published, so you can't modify the program.

@divecomp, sorry, but it would help a lot if you can make a list of single items you would like to see improved in the calendar app. Looking at screenshots of aCalendar didn't help me much. I can see the differences, but this does not convert into tasks we can discuss the feasibility or not. I'm waiting to something like:

Then, we can discuss point by point what is possible or not or how to do it. For instance, I'm proposing an implementation for the time zone issue at the moment (https://together.jolla.com/question/81380/add-timezone-setting-when-creating-calendar-event/?answer=222776#post-id-222776). This solution is being discussed with Jolla developers and may be accepted (or not) after improvements and modifications. So it's not all doomed, just that it would help to be precise on what you would like to see as changes.

Hi there,

For me ...

  • a week view with the event titles plus color of the event category would be nice

  • In month view the little lines in the color of the event category would be great

Greetings, broncheolus

broncheolus ( 2020-03-05 22:49:05 +0300 )edit

Hi, I am totaly with broncheolus for the timebeing is the week view with different colours, so that we can see it in the month view (as broncheolus said).

Thx DiveComp

For me, I would like to have the following features:

  • week view with 6 quadratic tiles for each day, the last tile includes Sat and Sun; this way, many events are visible without the need of scrolling

  • tasks are included and shown when they are active, i.e., from start to end date

  • copy/paste feature of events

  • possibility to change the calendar of an event after it has been created

Unfortunately You are not the first one mentioning this issue: just search the forum and you'll find posts from years ago, but nothing happened. For me the calendar is the most important app, and I was just close to quit Sailfish for that poor app. But for me now it works with aCalendar from GoogleStore with DAVx5 and synching with nextcloud calendars. But this is IMHO just a ugly workaround. WE NEED A GOOD CALENDAR-APP, all the suggestions are given ... where are all those nerdy coders? 😉

Now I am confused. Does CalDAV synching in Android Calendars work or not?

Kekskopf ( 2020-03-12 14:14:18 +0300 )edit

For me, at Simple Calendar Pro an aCalendar = NOT.

DiveComp, Sony Xperia XA2

divecomp ( 2020-03-12 14:52:30 +0300 )edit

On Xperia X with Sailfish 3.2 + DAVx5 version 2.5.3-ose(297) from the Aptoide store (this is not the latest version!!) + calendars on a Nextcloud server (latest version) = it works! The Android calendar app you use does not matter, for me at least two apps are working (aCalendar and Etar from F-Droid store).

Jolkas ( 2020-03-13 09:20:25 +0300 )edit

On Xperia 10, DAVx5 from Fdroid syncs but the calendar is not visible in any Android calendar. Just tried it out. Is DAVx5 on the Xperia X necessary? I thought that the calendars are shared between Sailfish OS and Aliendalvik, i.e., if you set up a Caldav account on Sailfish OS, it should be also visible on Android.

Woidboy ( 2020-03-13 15:17:14 +0300 )edit

@ Woidboy: that would be fantastic, but it is not reality ... we still have to frickle around for this basic function with ugly workarounds! Yes, a Android CalDav Synch tool is necessary.
