Now that we are discussing the technology that could be used for making a PC sync / backup tool, a "PC suite" for Jolla.

Now, whatever technology we choose, I think we should also come up with more Jolla-like name, which we call it, that fits into the theme!

We already have Harbour, a dry-dock for developers, Sailors, and the Jolla (Finnish for "dinghy") etc., so your suggestion should probably fit in to this theme.

Vote for your favourite, and/or add your own suggestion (please remember to check the "community wiki" box)!

To promote your own suggestion, collect votes, and give everyone an easy overview (to avoid doubles), please link your answer to the end of this list:

@Anna thank you for this poll! The list of the names proposed above does only show about half of the proposed names so far, which is a bit confusing. Please consider to delete it, as it would make it easier for users to scroll through the answers without the space covered by it on each page.

@corneliusg - (it's a wiki, remove the links if you think that's a better solution. I'm the one who added the links, as I thought it would give others an easier way to see the different suggestions, when the suggestions began to cover multiple pages. the idea was for contributors to add an answer-suggestion (as a wiki!) and then add the link to the question-suggestion.)

phle ( 2014-02-11 23:44:01 +0300 )edit

I think it was a bad idea to delete the links. Everyone who was serious about their contribution should have added a link for others to easily access their favorite suggestion and vote for it. Not sure if people go through all answers now. I could add tons of suggestions, but I may not be convinced of all of them myself. So I might add them as an answer but not promote them to collect votes. However, if someone finds a suggestion well worth being promoted, they are welcome to add it to the list.

Also, I'm sure there will be lots of doubles now. Not good to have the links removed at all. This is why I recovered the earlier version and added To promote your own suggestion and collect votes, link your answer at the bottom of this list:. Should be very clear now.

Anna ( 2014-02-12 06:30:47 +0300 )edit

Ok, I've added all suggestions "up til now", and also edited them to a more compact format.

Hopefully this will suit both @corneliusg, and the rest of us who (have actually added our suggestions to the list, and) prefer having all suggestions easily viewable.

Sally Port

According to wikipedia "sally port is a secure, controlled entryway, as of a fortification or a prison".

a Opinion: What exactly would the PC Suite do? I would like to see the phone in a simple USB Stick mode (both local and SD card visible like a USB stick) and therefore no additional application would be needed and compatible with Linux, Mac, Windows and other OSes (!!) - use your favourite media/photo manager or a plain file manager (like MS Explorer) to manage the storage, have "Backups" folder in the root which can be copied to a PC by simple copy+paste, then charging only which would do nothing, but draw more power from the USB port if possible (500mA?), finally everything else for the developers or travellers with no Wifi device, which I suppose is the USB LAN card which should also give a network access like real USB LAN card connected to a Internet router (Simple, Generic, no drivers needed).

I do not see a need for a separate PC suite.. just make sure the USB stick mode exports the backups directory properly so that a simple copy+paste would be a very easy task. If you are thinking of a calendar sync, then this should be done via an online service, e.g. a cloud, ownCloud, Google, Jolla(?), etc. I would like to stress here the requirement to have own solution, preferably FOSS, like ownCloud because Privacy is an important thing these days.. There is also SOGo things which give access to Calendars, Events, Tasks, Contacts and Emails via WebDAV services. A PC suite for syncing sounds like the 90s, Internet Explorer 4 and Outlook Express...?

Please correct if I misunderstood something here.

no pc, no ios, ..... Just " SailSuite " program inside a jolla phone & @ all backup sw developmet as part of normal sailfish OS development and that - jolla should be able to format normal usb stick that is my back-up storage - or use preformatted usb drive that has been formatted to ext4 - and just store the backup into a usb drive - and gallery option "save / move files to usb stick

  • requires of course the big usb to small usb adapter cable or just use usb dual drive stick that has both sizes built in

SailSuite or SailSafe and if my jolla formats the usb stick and the label of the stick is named as MySailSafe or MySailBay or MySailDock

on a usb-stick, or through an http(s) connection through usb or wlan, which we could use with a webbrowser, like Airdroid or sailserver (with expanded fuinctions)

Port

The fact that I don't need to copy-paste a dictionary definition should speak for itself. Why over-complicate stuff?

Comments

Better do some pasting form wikipedia anyway, to avoid confusion. (:

Port "a physical interface between a computer and other computers or devices"

Porting "the process of modifying software so as to make it compatible with other operating system and/or hardware architectures"

evk ( 2014-02-07 15:05:21 +0300 )edit

Also:

  • PORT.hu, a Hungarian film, actor, television, sports, and theatre database

  • Port, Szczecin, a neighbourhood in Szczecin, Poland

  • Port, a small medical appliance installed in the body

Among many, many others. But I don't see how is that relevant... :/

You're right, those and other non computing related uses of the the word port can be ignored. But using a term that already have one or even two established uses in more or less the same context is in my opinion not optimal.

We most probably want to use this to move things to, and from, our Jollas - load, and unload - so:

Berth (pronounced similar to "birth")

Wikipedia: Berth (moorings)

A berth is a designated location in a port or harbour used for mooring vessels when they are not at sea.

and

Berth is the term used in ports and harbors for a designated location where a vessel may be moored, usually for the purposes of loading and unloading.

(edit: yes, this is basically "a part of port/harbour", but without the risk of confusing it with the Jolla Harbour (where developers load their applications))

Jolla Porvooseen : the meaning is "Jolla to Porvoo" where Porvoo is Finland’s second oldest city following Turku and there are there a wonderful wooden waterfront warehouses. Jolla’s updates are following lake names, so I’m suggesting something strongly connected to Finland.

"Jolla in Porvoo" would be actually "Jolla Porvoossa", when translated in finnish :)
