Because WLAN has issues. The version jolla uses is 1.15. The current version is 1.21

From the 1.20 releasenotes:

ConnMan 1.20 is a bugfix release fixing a wide variety of issues. Since a few of the discovered issues can potentially lead to a crash, we recommend upgrading.

connmanctl help ends with:

Note: arguments and output are considered EXPERIMENTAL for now.

PyroDevels build instructions, change checkout to 1.21.

Lets do it togehter: connmand 1.21 works with this configuration: ./configure --prefix=/ --exec-prefix=/usr --enable-openvpn --enable-vpnc --enable-test --enable-nmcompat --enable-polkit --disable-dundee --disable-neard

Discovered downside so far: networks are not displayed in WLAN settings, only "Pull down to connect ot Internet". It discovers present WLANs. New connections can be made with connmanctl

One note to add: I don't have a data plan, data only over WLAN, so can't tell about that. The jolla displays 3G coverage.

You definitely need to set --enable-pacrunner that will enable automatic proxy settings, and you would need --enable-wispr for the hotspot access.

My own accesspoint was the turning point yesterday; once in a while that thing needs a power cycle. Upside was that the jolla kept responsive, but couldn't connect to the ISP WLAN. After the rebuild it was troublesome, but that is why I have an extra accesspoint... So far connman 1.21 improves stability.

Since Jolla keeps updating ConnMan (v. 1.23 right now) and an answer was given, I close this question. Please reopen it if you don't agree.

There are so many connman related issues because of the outdated version :-/. And in every topic we got no official answer if it is planned to update connman :(.

Here some examples:

yes, Jolla is working on updating connman. But all software is buggy, even the latest and greatest of anything.

Connectivity is not just connman though, there are quite a few components and other variables involved with it all, including environmental.

Jolla, please update connman or at least provide a package we can test. Current outdated version is too buggy and make wifi connectivity very unstable and unpredictable.

connman is not the only thing determining connectivity.

Jolla will update connman when we have time to test it, as well as test local changes we have and will make.

That is clear, but as the connectivity issues are probably major problem with current Jolla(next to the random spontaneous reboots) we really need urgent fixes there. Why don't you consider hotfixes outside major PR-s?

Indeed, there's more than connman alone, within a few hours the status change phenomenon showed and this morning the exclamation mark showed continous with a working connection until it went to sleep - I observed it yesterday evening too. With at sleep I mean when jolla doesn't accept an incoming ssh connection. A wake up by double tap shows the WLAN icon with no signal. And then it reconnects.

the exclamation mark only means there might be a problem with the connection. If the connection works, it simply means the online check failed.

We will do hotfixes when needed and the fix gets tested enough, works well and does not cause any regressions.

With 3 days experience connmand 1.21 is more stable then connmand 1.15. Rebooting this afternoon was the first time since saturday afternoon. The screen didn't respond to answering a call, while an hour earlier it still did. Please keep the battery usage: that is a big improvement with 1.0.3.8! That is a big improvement: before 20 % usage a night, with 1.0.3.8 a few %, 5 % max. If you want to know more about connmand version 1.21 experience, please ask. I'm a very regular user, who just knows how to build a program.

You will be missing quite a lot of missing features if you use a generic connman. It is not recommended or supported.
