Hardware problem: USB connector is loose, charging sometimes stops, anyone else has the same?

It seems that USB connector is a bit loose. Usually I have to double check that the device is really charging. Also it feels very weak and I'm afraid it might actually break at some point since its used daily.

Had same kind of problem with N9...

Others feel the same?

EDIT: The problem is that the cable part (connector) doesn't go "all the way in". When plugged in, you can clearly see a part of the silver connector and it is not tightly fitted, actually pretty loose. Same with N9. But not with Iphone, which has different type of a connector.

I haven't had any problems yet, but it does feel loose and fragile.

Yes mine is quite lose too but charges without a problem. Have you tried a different lead on your charger. The one that came with my Jolla gave up working a few weeks back. Charger unit and phone are fine though.

yes I do. If I hold the phone while charging the charge stops an resumes few seconds later.

Might it be due to the TOH being curved at the top, making the usb connector stay out of its fully inserted position by a couple millimeters?

Lose USB micro ports are a general problem with lots of devices, usually due to a questionable PCB layout (I've not looked at the Jolla PCB, though). The usual reason is that the PCB area, where the solder pads are located (those holding down the micro USB cage) is about the same size as the pads. Thus there is no margin of additional material stabilizing the cage adequately for the mechanical forces exerted on the connector.

I was also surprised to find my Jolla uncharged the next morning. Connector loose. I found that different cables have slightly different connector sizes, some work better with the Jolla. But something can be improved with Jolla's USB port in a future HW revision. All these cables work fine on my old HTC.

Micro-USB is specified for over 10'000 insertions, and the design ensures the cable wears out before the device. For me this sounds more like a broken cable (I had to replace cables in the past because they were worn out). Have you tried a different cable/charger?

With N900 the problem was the soldering breaking apart.So, is the soldering included in your 10.000 inserts. I already filed those small hooks in that connector flat.

I am always careful with micro-USB sockets, they seem very fragile despite the specs. I never had a problem with my N900.

The cage might be specified for 10000 insertions, but that's about it. Everything else is likely to die sooner.

I still use my N900 on a daily basis. The micro-USB socket is still fine, while I had to replace the flexible cable which is connecting the screen and the keyboard half (Right now it seems to break apart for the second time). So, at least in my case, the connector is not limiting the lifespan of the device (the average user would have thrown away a device with a non-working display or speaker instead of taking it apart and replace the cable).

I have this problem with two JP1, getting worse every day. Only chance to charge is to bend the usb-cable to the connector. Are there any usb-connectors to replace? Whitch connectors where used at the jp1? Does anyone know what devices uses the same connector?

These for me have always turned out to be poor cable issues.

If the plastic case of the micro usb connection end of the cable has any flex in it whatsoever it is going to slowly flex over time giving erractic connection that usually needs some bending to correct. This is almost always the case for cheep micro usb cables.

This is one time when price actually is important unfortunately. If the plastic closing the connection to cable is solid i.e. no flex in that part, then It's probably going to be good.

This is based on numerous micro usb cables of a few different devices. samsung, htc, jolla, nokia n9 and n900

Several times I met broken or desoldered connector pins (the pins of the connector soldered to the phone motherboard, not the ones that make contact to the cable).

Similar problem happened to me. Soldering of one pin was broken. Problem was solved by resoldering the connector pins.

Same probleme here with different cables and chargers. I tried to fix in an elegant way:

I tried it with the available pads for the Samsung S3, as stated here. You have to remove the fat solder "bubbles" but even with a lot of tape abd pressure my Jolla loaded only a few seconds :(

I had it with specific charger, seems like a problem in the charger itself. when happened, the charger got warmed, after cooling it, it worked OK for few hours.

If the connector doesn't go all the way in, there might just be some dust or dirt stuck inside one of the connectors, which gets pushed in harder every time you put in the cable. I've cleaned this out once with a very thin needle (on my phone it was behind the plastic part with the contact pins in the socket, very hard to reach and to see.)

(Note: I didn't stick the needle in further than the bottom of the socket, just to wipe the dust out of the socket...)

For me the cable supplied by jolla caused the problem (like loose connection/connector) from the beginning with my JP1. I am still using the charger and cable from my CAT B12 Phone. Somewhere i also read, that the cable from jolla is very cheap and is causing such problems. Thats why i bought a replacement cable. This cables are also working very well here.
