SailfishOS on desktop?
Hey. This is not taboo, is it? :-)
We have moved to a new Sailfish OS Forum. Please start new discussions there.
Hey. This is not taboo, is it? :-)
We can dream, right? So let's dream!
I wonder, could Sailfishos handle multiple UI's?
As in, depending on the type of setup (mobile, "docked" - as in connected to a montor / kb), provide a customized UI for each case, and displaying the appropriate one on the (relative) port - the USB for desktop, mobile screen for mobile?
They would not need to differ by much in terms of functionalities;
and they would definitely be based on the same content (obviously);
but these customized UI's could be tailored more specifically to the different use-case scenarios (desktop vs mobile).
SailfishOS is a linux and can support different "display managers". My main computer (used as a HTPC) has three DMs installed right now. Sailfish could do the same.
But I think that SailfishOS could be adapted to handle both use cases.
Something that looks like an app could transfer the “desktop" of the phone to the bigger screen and activate "touchpad emulation" for the phone's touchscreen. A gesture would close the big screen mode and make the phone a phone again.
I'm experimenting with a bluetooth keyboard just to get a feel for how such a jollaDesk might feel to use.
vattuvarg ( 2016-06-24 18:50:11 +0200 )editThe point would be to get rid of the "desktop" transfer alltogether.
An adaptation is always inferior to something native. And yes, as this would definitely be possible with different DM's, in case of Wayland, the compositor in question would need to be different OR the main compositor (lipstick in this case) should arrange the info differently for the desktop.
The challenge in here, is to KISS (Keep It Simple) things down to earth. As code would face the danger of quick duplication (hence maintenance), plus you would face double the ammount of testing.
tortoisedoc ( 2016-06-24 23:00:59 +0200 )editOne challenge in this respect is the possibility to rely mobile-first apps to be usable as desktop apps as well.
tortoisedoc ( 2016-06-25 12:50:27 +0200 )editThere at least is Sailfish OS on Raspberry Pi 2. https://sailpi.wordpress.com/
Not sure if it also works on a Pi 3.
Jolla could sell a kit based on the raspberry pi 3. Something like the Kano would be nice.

vattuvarg ( 2016-06-29 12:48:33 +0200 )editI think some kind of virtualization support (Xen, KVM, whatever...) will suffice, so that it's possible to plug in keyboard/mouse/screen and use your phone as a desktop PC.
And then add a possibility to interact with Sailfish apps from this VM (like a remote desktop service) - wayland has probably sth. like this already implemented.
edit: With VM I mean a general purpose VM which can run arbitrary OS's, i.e. run a desktop Linux/Windows/whatever you like on the phone (would require enough RAM).
@Lutwolf the glacier compositor was discontinued. The main reason for that I believe lies in the closed-sourceness of Silica API. But I might be wrong.

How would you like a TV with a HDMI stick connected, to interact with your Jolla?
Enable more refined locale Settings that are respected by system and 3rd-party apps
a vncviewer (maybe by the community or externel developer)? [duplicate]
Cloud backup should be encrypted
[Feature Request] User agents for Jolla Browser: Open website as Desktop/Mobile
Suggestion: Switch to disable swiping in Android apps. [duplicate]
Sailfish or Android support development [answered]
Introduce Co-developer badge linked to karma-levels and activities
Its basically a modern linux distro minus the UI and a few things that are coming in the near future (systemd-user, wayland)
Use any and you'll be alright.
ApB ( 2014-02-28 12:01:50 +0200 )editOne suggested hardware for running sailfish is the $99 Utilite computer. It has no screen at all so it has to be used as a desktop. It can be powered by a car battery without adapters and uses a maximum of 6 watts. There are other systems out there with similar specs.
vattuvarg ( 2014-02-28 12:17:57 +0200 )editI would like to see Sailfish on TV's - especially when having problems with the SW of my Philips (42PFL6907K).
torcida ( 2014-02-28 12:18:38 +0200 )editIt's not taboo, but it's just not helpful to other Jolla owners who are seeking to learn about their new phone and fix the myriad of problems it has. This kind of question really, is better suited to the likes of TalkMaemoOrg forums, where there is a melting pot of ideas for all kinds of tech, including Jolla and sailfish. Please consider moving/closing this question for the benefit of the forum, as we are slowly getting bogged down by irrelevant questions and comments. However, your question is very similar to questions in my own head; what can we cram on here, on that, on this.....the list is endless, but please consider moving your question to a more suited forum, just sayin ;) Regards,
Spam Hunter ( 2014-02-28 16:42:53 +0200 )edit@Markkyboy - If Jolla releases SailfishOS for a bigger pad and if someone uses that pad with a keyboard then that's pretty much a desktop computer. ...and related to Jolla, imho. It is a bit on the skunkworks side, I have to admit that, but a smartphone with a external hdmi screen, a usb keyboard and the shipRat app for touch/num-pad functions could be quite nice. I would like a desktop like that. And Jolla could well be making one in the near future.
