I was wondering what are the best ways of helping Jolla succeed in having a sustainable ecosystem around their OS and phone. Obviously, more apps in the store always help, but which apps should get the most attention for the greatest impact? And spreading the word is also important, even without a personal website (showing the phone to friends etc).
What do you think? What community effort will help them the most?

Obviously if you can contribute to the code is the best, but something that everyone can do is keep spreading the word whenever and wherever (especially to not so much tech savvy people): face to face, comments on review sites. Always be polite and shows objectively the merits of SailfishOS and the vision, help people understand the importance of not being locked in a walled garden.

Is there any how to on porting sailfishos? I would start ASAP, the mer wiki is not really up to date, and for the other stuff like libhybris there are only some blog posts and YouTube videos. In fact there is no recovery image of sailfishOS for Jolla device. So how could you start porting, when you are no Jolla employee?

Great! I'd say the community can help by approaching local developers and help them publish their apps in the Jolla store. Jolla can perhaps incentivice this by rewarding community helpers. Essentially, there should be a viable business for people in porting apps to Sailfish on behalf of developers.
It should be orchestrated somehow, not unstructured.
I think writing out my idea would quickly turn into a project plan. However, the essence is a community of local developers who approach app publishers about publishing their apps in the Sailfish store or about writing native apps.
The 'app ambassadors' would need some training in porting apps to Sailfish. Jolla can incentivize with a micro-payment program, so they can publish an Android app in the Jolla store for free. Writing a native app could be an additional service. For the ambassadors, this creates an opportunity to attract assignments.
Obviously, there needs to go some thought into the right training, incentive program, as well as a targeted approach to get the most relevant local apps in the store first: banks, public transport,news and sports, etc.

One thing you can do is to help organizing development / fan events in your location. Just invite people with interest and make it happen!
