I'm not an active geocacher (yet), but have helped a friend who is find some.

One of the main reasons why I haven't started geocaching myself, is that the from the ToS/PP side, I like the OpenCaching Network (.de/.nl/.pl/..., not to be confused with .com!) the best, but I could not find a working client neither for MeeGo nor for Mer/Nemo/Sailfish.

So, something like this could get me started with this hobby :)

Another similar cool hobby is BookCrossing, where caches are actually books and the idea is that after you read them, you move them someplace else.

I opened a separate question for that.

Will there be any interest in a native geocaching app for Sailfish ?

If there are, I might start the development of one, but as I'm not an geocacher myself, I will need someone to explain what features are needed!

Please observe: This is just a probe, and the project is entirely speculative right now.

It might be useful to just port the Advanced Geocaching Tool for Linux from N9 as it is already written in QML (needs to be ported to QtQuick 2.0).

I used agtl on my N9,which it was originally developped for. Unfortunately, it isn't under heavy development anymore. Might be, the new maintainer would give it a chance?

Yes there definitely is! Maybe the demand is delayed as this OS is still at an early stage. But there is a huge amount of poeple geocaching on smartphones..

I have had a look at AGTL, but it was developed in python! I'm no python fan and do not want to juggle yet another programming language, so I'll have to pass on that one.

I am also using c:geo and have been developing a geocaching application for my own fun and for learning. It will be named Geosailing; I hope to have a public beta at the end of the year and something usable next summer (depending on how busy I am at work). I have contacted Groundspeak and requested API access but I have not yet heard from them. (Groundspeak says that they do not give access to it anymore but let's see.) I try to build something modular so that any backend (geocaching.com, opencaching.com/de, etc.) could be used easily with the same code base.

Don't be too exited though — I am a geocacher and a tinkerer, not a professional application developer. And I have a bad habit of not meeting deadlines set by myself.

Did you have any luck with Groundspeak wrt the API access? I'm currently writing my own app, it's currently working with opencaching as a backend, and I wonder how big of a PITA would it be to get the official caches to work as well.

c:geo for Android works quite well, by the way. You can find it on the F-Droid store: https://f-droid.org/repository/browse/?fdfilter=c:geo&fdid=cgeo.geocaching

I would love to see a native app too, though.

Edit, March 2015: Seems to be removed from F-Droid unfortunately, but still available at Aptioide for example.

are the sensors working well there? I've got the official, paid app running but the the sensors are not running as they should I think, accuracy is quite bad..

It has worked for me quite well, but judging accuracy can be subjective. Just try it out.

c:geo works quite well for me too. Note that you need to set the map type to something else than Google Maps to see anything (at least that's what I had to do on my phone). Still, a native app would be awesome.

A SailfishOS port of c:geo would be very nice!

(Personally, I mainly cache using a handheld GPS, but it's always nice to have a tool for spontaneous caching. :-) )

I've been using c:geo for a month or two, about 50 caches found, so it works fine with Jolla. Native caching app would be nice...

Any news on this, there's still no native geocaching app? I'm using c:geo Android app, it works, more or less. But a native SailfishOS Geocaching app would be great! Do you know if anybodys working on this?

I just looked into this, since it would be fairly easy for me to add geocaches into the "Nearby venues" search in Poor Maps. It seems that geocaching.com is still the popular one, but don't provide an API. opencaching.com provides an API, but doesn't have much users or caches. Maybe those here with announcements of intentions ran into the same problem?

That's exactly my problem, I had plans for a simple geocaching app (as I do not geocache myself, I would start simple and let the users tell me what was missing) but after having researched the possibilities I found that I wouldn't be able to use geocaching.com, and the alternatives was little used. So for now the plans has been shelved, sorry.

You could look into the AGTL source code, which is neatly integrated with Geocaching.com. Its source can be found here: https://github.com/webhamster/advancedcaching

AGTL is a brilliant tool which does nearly everything. I really hope someone can port it to Sailfish.

I would like a port of cacheme, a geocaching application for N900 and N9. I always found it to be the easiest and most reliable application :)

There is app called OSMapper that let you record your track and save it into gpx file. U can download it from Warehouse/OpenRepos

Viewranger for android works without problems. I use it to track my routes on the mtb, but used it earlier for geocaching
