Problem

We have ~~4 directions (two in each screen but Launcher)~~ 2 horizontal directions to swipe into the screen ~~and have for all four the same response~~ from the basic views (lock-, home-, launcher-).

~~Either have Lock-screen border-swipe (left|right) or home-screen go to chooser but not both and not all four kinds, please.~~

Make it default to have all six ambience-chooser but give us some choices, please. You need to keep the settings app open at all times as you need the favourites so often that there is no point in closing it.

Ideas

Have Lock-screen have the ambience let Home-screen have settings for border swipe
Have Lock-screen have the ambience let Home-screen have setting's favourites page for border swipe
Have a settings entry to choose border-actions (I am sure you come up with some crazy ideas what there could be hidden for a border-swipe)

Question

Why does Launcher-screen have no border action (that would make 6 directions) and why did you remove the ambience-page from the lock-screen?

An answer from 1 year and 3 days ago was accepted - this reads again as Jolla failed to deliver

I'd like the third Idea, that would be the most useful have "extra" swipes configurable.

another idea for Home screen border swipes:

Swipe from either side of the Home screen, to access all opened covers - that is: not only the nine most recent ones. An option would be to have one side with pinned covers (max nine), the other side with "#10 & older" covers opened (scrollable sideways).

@phle having home-screen swipeable left-right is another idea already and is not giving any use to border-swipes for anyone with <10 covers

In the long run, Ambiences are intended to be setting umbrellas, where switching between your favorite ambiences would disable and enable a user specified set of system settings. This is just another way of offering you a way to control your device radios and features with the added bon, us of seeing a visual image as a representation of your selected features that extends all the way to application level.

This way, you can have your favorite set of accounts and features enabled when you go running, and have a deep visual indication of it. When you go to bed, you have similarly an image that communicates all your sounds except alarm tone is muted, all accounts are turned off and all features are optimized for power saving.

That's the reason for reserving the border swipes for ambience switcher in both lock and home screens. For launcher side swipes, maybe we have some plans for them, stay tuned ;) Thanks for the good feedback that confirms our initial design intention to provide control over your favorite settings.

With this explanation by @Jaakko Roppola fast ambiance switching via shortcut starts to make sense in the long run. Looking forward to getting extended settings&option control as well as a way for scheduled ambiances switching.

Even if Ambiances would be a central function of Jolla/SailfishOS I think reserving both lock and home screen swipes for this is too much. The transition between them are simple so even if only one is used Ambiance switch isn't that far away.

@Mohjive, yes I understand, the use cases the ambience switcher serves are:

take device from your pocket, power on display, change ambience -> continue using or pocket it again
use an application, swipe to home, change ambience - continue using the app.

Lock and Home views are part of the vertical Main page and therefore the function is the same. Thanks for the good feedback!

Great!
At the moment, I have a "sleep mode, when working the day after", where everything except Clock alarm and Ringtone is set to "No sound". Ringtone due to in the case should I oversleep, then my work calls and wonders where I'm at.
The ideal would be if I could choose "Ringtone: No soundexcept for (the number my work may call from, to alert me, but still none of my colleagues)".

This way, Ambience would be "Profiles, but way fancier". :-)

@Jaakko Roppola: Isn't launcher part of the vertical main page as well? But that has another use for swipe (yet to be released :) )

I did some tests and imo minimizing an app and going via the lock screen to switch ambiance and the extra two pushes are very little extra action - for extra function

I've changed my mind: I no longer wish for "Ambience only available from Lock screen, side-swipes from Home should show [some sort of multitasking views]", but rather:

1) Make the Ambiences truly customizable:

ability to have separate Systems settings (display, sounds and feedback, connectivity, language, etc.) for each Ambience

but also

what four apps, and in what order, should be shown at the bottom of the Home screen
(I could have very different apps showing, depending on the Ambience.)
ability to re-arrange, but also hide altogether, apps in Launcher
(example:
"Work" Ambience hides all time-distracting games,
"Leisure" Ambience hides all work-only related apps.)

With this, I could have all my Android apps in one Ambience, and hide them in all my other Ambiences (with the goal of not needing any Android apps at all).

If I could device-lock chosen Ambiences, I could even have a "demo-Ambience" to show friends without worrying that they'd "break my settings".

2) The next level up from that would be simultaneous multitasking on Ambience levels:
Absolutely no need for more screens to show 10+ apps - just switch to another Ambience and, voilà, there you go.
(Problem, though: How to deal with, say, music playing in one Ambience? - A workaround could be for that app & cover to be present on all Ambience's Home screens, similar to Linux' "pin" feature.)

The home-screen favourites are editable just like re-arranging launcher-items (launcher-edit-mode). For the rest, interesting idea to have ambiences hold +9 covers - for the +9 covers I personally favour a pinch gesture so you do not need to go anywhere and stay on home-screen and keep swipes as is.

@chemist - I know that it's possible to re-arrange the apps showing on Home screen, but what if you could switch all the four different apps with the change of Ambience?
It would be possible to have a Work Ambience, with, say, work-related apps (and that Ambience would have "an office appropriate" ring-tone, automatically connect to your work's WLAN, etc.),
and a "Leisure" Ambience, with four different apps showing at the bottom of the Home screen (and the corresponding Ambience has a ringtone of your choice, connects to your mobile network or home WLAN, etc. - and I probably won't even see any work related apps using the "Leisure" Ambience).

I really hope this is what they envisioned with Ambiances. Totally switching moods depending on ambiance. Reminds me slightly of BB10 work/play areas.

(and yeah, I know ... that's the thing with beta - wanting things, but needing to actually make them work before they're released - and if I'm not willing, or able, to contribute (as in coding, for example) myself, then I'll just have to wait ... I guess this very first Jolla phone should be nicknamed "Patience" ;-) )

Just an idea... Lockscreen pull down menu to contain

.......silence sounds.....(this can be replaced by something else if vibration off is supported in ambience settings),

......wifi on/off.......,

......bluetooth on/off....

......gps on/off.....

......airplane mode on/off....

Current date should move to above/below the clock in the lockscreen e.g

lock screen left borderscreen swipe ->Camera

Home screen right borderscreen swipe ->Settings

Home sreen left borderscreen swipe ->android app/homescreen with running android app covers..
