Questions.

What are the pros and cons of setting up a gmail account with either of these options in the email app?

I think GTalk is the only difference. And might be some other Google services, e.g. G+.

Your calender and contacts can also be synced with google I think. It's your decision if you want all these data stored on google server or not ;-) (obviously I'm not a google fan :D)

So for just email it's better to use a general account. While i like some of Gs services i really hate shoving down your throat shit like G+ or whatever.

I seem to recall that there was a limitation or something that @VDVsx mentioned but i am not sure.

You need a Google account to sync your calendars or contacts. You can still use your general email as primary mail, if you wish.

From email side the only difference between generic Google and Google account is the type of authentication used. Google account uses OAuth2 and generic uses normal IMAP/SMTP authentication. Same code is used for all the other operations.

You can also configure Google account with email service deactivated and then configure a generic one for mail, no problem with that.

I might be waaaay of here but wasn't there a problem with how back (date) you can get to read/download your mails with OAuth2?? Or something like that.

I seem to recall you mentioned it but can't find it. Might be wrong though.

Anyway my biggest problem is the lack of official support for native keyboard. But thats not a mail problem.

Yes, messages older than 21Nov 2013 when using OAuth.
