Update: I never got around to use that fedex pickup. The battery was the issue - it was drained. I got this external charger

http://www.ebay.de/itm/Universal-Intelligent-LCD-USB-Wall-Reisen-Ladegerat-Charger-For-Phone-Battery-/370860705392?pt=DE_Handy_PDA_Ladeger%C3%A4te_Dockingstationen&hash=item5659054670#shpCntId

This enabled me to charge the battery, and enter recovery and complete a full restore.

Still, where are the batteries available in Jolla Store? Having those to purchase could have avoided me screaming this loud.

So, it finally happened. Due to locked bootloader, I cannot restore my Jolla by fastboot. I can not boot to recovery and do a factory reset. The phone will not come alive, after it by itself rebooted during installation of latest update. I refuse to submit it to Jolla Care, and I also refuse to obtain a new device with this kind of issues. You will find my current contributions on openrepos, but none will be updated! Goodbye!

Just curious, why do you refuse these things, seems odd:

(1) I refuse to submit it to Jolla Care (2) I also refuse to obtain a new device

Sad to hear that :-( You'll be missed a lot! Totally understand your frustrations and I hope Jolla weakens some of those restrictions in the near future. But I'd really try Jolla Care - had a very good experience with them and they make it as easy as possible to send the device to Finland.

May I have it?

Sleep on it. One thing is being angry, and the rest is another...

Think about it. We all will miss your work on openrepos.

@Nieldk I share your feelings, and in my opinion updating to the latest version after a factory reset shouldn't go through any single locked version during the update process.

As a suggested answer: I hope Jolla enables system updates directly from unlocked 1.0.0.5 to unlocked latest version

I hope to hear from you again when this is possible, which is hopefully VERY soon. Maybe you could give Jolla some time to react on this and take a break meanwhile. I took some time off from community work when the 1.0.2.locked was released, but I returned after the unlocking was possible again. Back then, I think Jolla was quick in enabling the unlocking

So, after request from care, I submitted my information for a repair and FedEX pickup, still waiting for confirmation and further information, since friday afternoon.

So could this be closed? There's not really any answer that can be given here to your post so it makes sense to close imho...

True, will close the thread. Also, just recieved answer and docs for shipping

Perfect, so let me change the title to reflect better like "Goodbye...No, wait! Hello again Jolla!" ;) Jokes apart, good that there's a solution to your case...

eric ( 2014-07-01 15:41:34 +0200 )edit

LOL, good one, I changed the title

So even with an external battery charger, you were not able to recover your Jolla?

Its been dead for ~24 hours, believe me, if any, I know how to recover from a bricked device. Unfortunately it is not possible since it is impossible to boot a custom recovery by fastboot because of the locked bootloader (which was relocked for security measures by Jolla in 1.0.2.5 FW).

What happened was:

I had a black screen after a reboot (no bootloops). (I was on 1.0.7.18) I made a factory reset (recovery way) This made the device boot and functional (but, on 1.0.0.5) I updated in terminal to 1.0.7.16 (ssu re 1.0.716 -> ssu ur -> pkcon refresh -> version --dup) I ended up with a browser (sailfish) that would only start from terminal run by root. Running as user nemo, from terminal. showed that some jolla-settings related stuff crashed the browser Removing, and Reinstalling sailfish-browser and sailfish-browser-settings didnt make any changes to this I 'downgrade' to 1.0.2.5 using ssu re 1.0.2.5 -> ssu ur -> pkcon refresh -> version --dup Booom, the phone rebooted ~50% into this while installing packages Reboot loop occured, could enter recovery Needed to leave the device over-night (powered off) Next day, pressing vol down + power doesnt even turn on or vibrate pressing vol-down while inserting USB make device enter fastboot.

So, connecting to wall charger while pressing vol-down just enters fastboot, and taking out battery, pressing vol-down, while inserting battery, pressing power, does nothing. Any combination (USB-PC, USB charger) of inserting USB cable while pressing vol-down makes the device enter fastboot.

Starting from 1.0.0.5 the device updates twice to get to 1.0.7.16 iirc, so there is a step in between and if I am not wrong it is 1.0.2.5 getting installed first (that might have changed to a later one now).

chemist ( 2014-06-26 18:32:50 +0200 )edit

That is true, and it was during update to 1.0.2.5 the device rebooted, leaving it in this state

NielDK, tried asking stskeeps or other Jolla guys ond IRC freenode #jollamobile for help?

Stskeeps have tried to help, yes. But, the situation is. The issue with locking the bootloader I (and others) put to Jolla's attention from the very beginning, pointing out something like this miht happen. Unfortunately, they didnt listen, and at the same time making it very clear, that unlocking the bootloader voids any warranty. So, I am leaving, even if I manage to recover it in some time (I have some less official tools), I will not continue. This is not a community/hacker friendly device, and have become so even less.

I thought the bootloader is now locked but you can unlock it from recovery console if you want to without voiding your warranty - if you really give it up and send it to me, I'd like you to send it to care - I am sure they can ship it to my hands afterwards. The return process is pretty painless (wrap it, request pickup, get it picked off your hands)
