Can file/mime types be associated to applications like on Harmattan?

I'd like to associate playlist files (.pls) to media player (but not ruling out possibility of other types/apps either)?

In general same mechanism (libcontentaction/desktop files) is used to associate mime-types to applications, so this is possible for applications.
For playlists and media player I do not know if the reason is that it is not done yet or if the idea is that playlist would come from tracker.
