How to get push notifications on in facebook messenger

I am using facebook messenger a lot but I can't get any notification (any soun or something) when I get new message. Is this just normal or is there some setting I could turn on to get the notifications.
Are you using the Android version or the native Sailfish-integrated messaging app? The native one always worked for me, but if I recall correctly it won't retrieve messages sent when your phone is not connected to network (wifi or mobile data).
