What are "developer updates"?

In developer settings, there are developer updates, which requires login and password to enable. What are these updates and who gives access to them?

It's a mistake that they're visible :)

We use those internally to set ssu to point to different repositories (testing, devel). They require authentication.

If you want to know more, ssu is part of nemomobile
