Jolla tablet announced at Slush '14 [Announcement] [not relevant]

I don't care too much about compatibility with current TOH... I just hope the new phone will be better - especially the HW like loudspeaker, battery... - and thinner.

Bought an TOHKBD some days ago, now I care...

I care much about compatibility because I bought many TOHs and throwing them all in a trash can would be bad ...

And the TOH cost is not low....

Iam DISAPPOINTED. Why go into the Tablet market....i was really looking forward to get a Jolla Phone, but now i have to buy the old one (which isnt that good 2014)

This is what I was thinking also. Both Jolla and Nokia are promising news this week.

Ok, so this was confirmed incorrect today with the launch of the N1. Nice to see Nokia back in business, anyway.

My guess: Jolla will announce an official port of Sailfish to the N1. (Okay, more wishful thinking than a real guess.)

Good catch. It very much looks like it. Hurm. Wonder what the future strategy will be then? Multiple phones with Sailfish or is this one the Jolla2? Not long to find out I suppose.

@theunemployablekoder no need to wonder about strategy. Jolla's strategy has always been with sailfishos rather than manufacturing phones

I think that Google's Ara project along with finnish mobile phone start-ups like Vsenn and Puzzlephone with their modular phone concepts are making TOH concept obsolete. I feel that TOH comes from the same modular hardware concept as the ones mentioned above, it's just too simplified to actually have useful features.

I think the chances of a tablet before a new phone model are vanishingly unlikely. Tablets are typically used much more heavily for browsing and media, and these would be more problematic on a Sailfish tablet than the UI itself. Re: size ... no way of telling, but it does appear to have minute bezels, and appears to be quite slender with no obvious TOH. With bezels that small, they could easily fit a 5" screen into the current phone's footprint.

I really hope for a 5.5" phone.

I hope for a phone that fits existing TOHs. Otherwise Jolla would bury this great concept before it could emerge.

As per edit3 ... if it is a phone, then it definitely has TOH in some form, as it's a TOH in the picture.

I'd probably buy a J2, I might buy a tablet. But I won't buy a phablet. I don't understand the purpose of those things. Also, many of the comments here stated that the J1 is about the max size of a phone, many of those would opt for smaller device. Though I might be biased, as I'm in the "smaller" camp.

I don't think Sailfish is anywhere near ready for tablet type usage patterns or screen size, personally. Also, the chances of a tablet having TOH is nil, I would think ... and as per my 3rd edit, the picture is of a TOH, not a phone per se.

Not that jolla the first would have been anywhere near being a fully fledged phone,that didnt stop jolla to release it tho :)

I'd go for tablet as well- the white edge doesn't have any grills or ports visible so must be large device and would they announce a new phone so soon after their promotion? (I have no problem with a new model coming out, has to happen sometime and can never please everyone with timing). We also have had a possible sneak preview of a Sailfish tablet UI at http://jaakkoroppola.blogspot.fi/2014/10/multi-touch-and-bigger-screens.html. Maybe Jolla announces tablet at Slush 2014 with Q2/Q3 2015 release, and then release Jolla2 phone with immediate availability at MWC 2015?

@vesper I just don't think that's realistic. They're unlikely to reach a level of viability for media functions, and UI aimed at tablets for a long while, even if they put all their resources into it. Announcing products 6-9 months out really isn't very ideal either. Larger, more powerful phone would make far more sense, since in terms of specs and performance, the existing phone is a very unattractive prospect. Also, announcing a new phone directly after a(n extended) promotion is the perfect time ... you've whittled down inventory, and you've made sure that no-one has recently bought the phone for the old price (if they're reasonably informed). I just hope it's using one of the newer ARMv8 SoCs ... they're so much more efficient, and chipsets using them from lower mid-range upwards tend to be very well featured.

@midnightoil not sure about how much would be need to be added for the UI -reading Jaakko Roppola's blog it seems like most of the framework for a gesture based multitasking tablet UI is in Sailfish already.
