This is a poll.

Look for the resolution you want in the answers. If you find it, vote for it. If you don't find it, add answer writing it precisely (pixels, abbreviation, and aspect ratio)

Use the comments, try to keep this as a poll.

I think this is irrelevant question until we know when the next phone is out and what's it display size... I mean, screen resolutions have developed fast lately, and ppi has more meaning than the resolution, looking this from the usability point of view. Suggest to close as "irrelevant" and maybe open again, when it's topical issue. However, nice question, just let's get the corner's clean (there are many question already to be solved)

I think the poll is relevant to get a feeling what the community prefers as a resolution.

But please follow the pollin guidelines https://together.jolla.com/question/16697/together-howto-polling-in-together/

Shouldn't we create an option with the current 480p resolution?

javispedro ( 2014-11-25 00:16:21 +0300 )edit

Added qHD (actual Jolla resolution), iPhone 4, iPhone 5

pulsar ( 2014-11-25 00:37:42 +0300 )edit

To be honest, I don't really care about screen resolution. I have a 24 inch monitor with FullHD Resolution and find it good enough. I have no clue why my mobile with a 4 to 5 inch screen should have the same or better resolution. I think it's more a posing factor than a true need. More like "I have the biggest", "Mine is the best"...

Yes, for both J2 (4.7") and J3 (4.0").

The smallest one seems to be in the HTC One (2013), at 4.7"

Yes, full HD at 4.6" or 4.7" should fit in the current size of the phone if the bezels are reduced a bit.

bilgy_no1 ( 2014-11-24 23:30:38 +0300 )edit

In a similar way, I calculated a 4.9" 16:9 display would fit under the glass of the Z10 + 7mm wider if the side bezels are untouched (lots of wasted space at top and bottom, but the height of the device seems quite perfect).

pulsar ( 2014-11-24 23:39:58 +0300 )edit

FullHD with this display size? Are you using magnifying glass to watch the screen, or why would you need it to be an overkill like this? (It just slows down the processing, or requires an overkill GPU as well, bringing the price higher)

simo ( 2014-11-25 01:06:23 +0300 )edit

I am using "768p" at 4.2". The next mass market resolution not to degrade the experience at 4.9" (what I am looking for) is 1080p.

5" 1920x1080 in a compact body would be the sales sweetspot. Eliminating most of the bezels would see no increase in phone size from the existing Jolla.

1280x720, same size screen (4.5 inches)

I don't want a narrower bezel as that would make tapping on some portions of the screen, whilst holding it in one hand, much more difficult. Keep the current design and just boost the resolution, it's more than 300ppi anyway so there's no need for 1080p.

It is a good idea to reuse as much as possible of the current design, upgrading components, to support budget users and save resources to create a second high end design for the rest (high end does not mean bigger than 5")

Voting this one just because it's a fairly reasonable non-TV resolution. Phone / screen makers / are way too hung up on 720p and 1080p which are really quite meaningless outside of TV / movies. As high a resolution / PPI as possible in a reasonably sized and priced smartphone.

for my part it is no matter how big is it. the ONLY ONE condition is, that the TOH of it is compatible with the current phone. Is really important. Otherwise is for customer silly, and then business too. its my point of view. I want to hold my TOH of the old one. with 29€, i won't pull it in bean so fast. And I think about those who buy the Keyboard TOH too, they really want to hold it for the price that they paid.

Best regards ;-)

I added it for completeness, but I doubt such a panel already exists at these sizes.
