Reasons to choose Windows 10 or Jolla? [answered]

What is the compelling reason to choose Jolla when Windows 10 aims to be compatibles and work on multiple devices or 10 types of hardware as shown on their technical preview? Assume we don't mention proprietary software but user experience.

We're here because we want and/or own a phone with Sailfish OS. This question is obsolete to be questioned here.

just having sailfishOS is no selling point. Person asking above has a good point. Jolla / Sailfish needs to be able to justify why to select it above anything that is on market. From consumer benefit point of view.

There are well known reasons such as privacy, gesture based UI, openness, together.jolla.com, Finnish OS, the list can be continued endlessly... What is Windows 10's selling point? An OS that's behind in time and gaining no traction for over 4 years even though it is made and sold by a multi multi multi billion dollar global company and has in fact fewer apps than SailfishOS can make use of. Sure, it's Android apps... but dozens of millions buy Android devices because of those apps. And we're the lucky ones that can make use of about all of them except a few ones without having to use a privacy infringing operating system coming from the USA. There's no justification needed. SailfishOS is a convincing piece of software once you make people having their hands on it for a while. What is jolla's main problem? You just can't go in a shop, try it and buy it. You still have to order one from jolla.com and the majority of countries is still excluded. There are US-Americans that would love to buy one, but it's too complicated for them to get one. I know what I'm talking about because I know how you feel if you want to order something abroad and realize they don't ship it to your country.

Because you want full Micro SDXC cross device compatibility - o wait Jolla has even that :D 1.5 Million! Next try: Using Android applications without Google play framework, to eventually see them one by one replaced by more elegant Sailfish native versions.

For reason of not using MS especially because you don't want to move to a situation where one company overviews your email, websearches, contacts including mobile numbers, potentially listens to your voice com (skype) , knows which game you play and how (xbox life etc) and all that with software that aggressively contacts a myriad of servers in Redmond, by Akamai, etc.. The number of connections a Windows 8 tries to make behind a users back is just astonishing. You can spend a day killing all that without compromising vital OS functionality. If you don't believe it, try the trial of Jetico Firewall, another excellent Finish software product. If that is not a reason enough for you, then do it for others whom cherish some privacy and who's data you are putting into MS' ever growing tentacles for being datamined, crosslinked and turned into a product.

Jolla, save us and seriously, get the Europe back on the map in terms of operating system development!

One could go for Windows Phone to make things easy between devices if you are commited to Windows enviroment on your desktops etc and Windows Phone probably can save camera pictures to memorycard which Jolla can't do atm.

Apart from idealistic reasons ([more] freedom from big corporations, [better] protection of privacy, supporting a small company, helping retain diversity on the market ...)?

I don't see why it is necessary to have one OS for all devices and I think Windows 8 is the perfect example why it is downright stupid: A mobile OS needs to be "dumbed down" enough to be configurable and usable in the easiest and most convenient way possible. And that's fine, because mobile devices are mainly used for entertainment, browsing and communication. A PC on the other hand is a lot more versatile and it's what grown-ups use to get work done. This means two things: 1. no need for candy-colored tiles all over the place and 2. proper and thorough access to all available programs and settings.

So instead of "one for all" you end up with a lot of compromise on both ends.

Now, I can see that we might be headed for a world where one device adapts to several different roles currently occupied by phones, tablets, laptops, PCs,... (see Ubuntu Touch). But we're not there yet by a long shot (see Windows 8 and also Ubuntu Touch).

Let me ask you this: what would you expect to gain from using W10 on all your devices?

What I see:

  • Live Tiles -> Useless blinking crap in my start menu? I'll pass on that.

  • Web integrated searches -> Are you looking for a file on your PC or something on the web? Don't see a scenario where that could be useful.

  • Apps -> I stopped watching there. My PC needs proper software, not apps to share my latest brain fart on facebook.

Look, why even still have a PC, when everything is cloud-based, web-integrated, convoluted bullshit? Just get a 24" tablet and be done with it.

I'm sorry, no offense to you. That video set off my rant mode.

You see by the number of upvotes that Windows 10 is not welcome among us. I fully agree with @Pistol.

Linux is already running on all devices since years. From the tinniest microcontrollers to the largest supercomputers. Windoz10 will never do that. Beside this, Linux is scalable and the very first applications from 90's are working perfectly these days as well. Do windoz can ? Even micro$oft will give the OS for free, it is hard to believe that major manufacturers will include this in their products. Samsung already have a mature and stable Linux OS for TV, largest network manufacturers have dozen of years of Linux development behind and all specialized products already run a POSIX variant. Sorry, windoz is NOT the future. :)

Windows has a 80% market share of operating systems. No comment.

You may want to correct above to desktop operating systems. ;)

Windows mobile doesn't even have option to receive files through bluetooth from other OS.

That was the same with android and iOS, another good point but we'd need to be able to share all files before we can have this as a pro argument.

I suppose Jane Doe would use email or OneDrive to do it?

To choose Windows 10, because no fully operational SailfishOS Office suite on Jolla .

Last week, I carefully tiped a long text on WPS King Office suite but export didn't work, when I needed to send it to colleagues.

Thus the Calligra Gemini port on Jolla will be a hard point in my decisions to invest or not in a W10 device*, in the next months.

In a more extended view, the availability of WINE too, as professionnal apps remain strongly on the desktop Windows environment (but, maybe Xwayland port on sailfish by Pedro Javis will bring a solution...)

  • I say device, since for me, the best next dreamed device would be a X86 Jolla2 extrapolated from the tablet , (working with my future Keyboard TOH) in the same way the Nokia C1 will be extrapolated from the Nokia N1 tablet, but it's another question.
