Numerous users have an issue with the phone rebooting by itself. User testing has revealed that it most likely has something to do with the battery. If this is happening to you, there are two ways you can probably solve the problem. You can either:

  • take out the phone battery, and rub all contact areas on the battery and the phone with a regular eraser, then just put the battery back in.
  • take a small piece of paper and put it between the bottom of the battery and the phone, so it makes better contact.
  • put a bit of paper between the battery and the phone body (as seen here)

If neither of these solutions helps at all, please mention this and edit this post to include that information.

It would be nice to read an official statement on the issue, if this is something related to the manufacturing process or something else.

edit 06.04.2015 (MacManus): i noticed that my jolla reboots on weak network connections (can't reproduce in wlan). If i'm in an area with weak network, my jolla constantly reboots. If i didn't activate my sim, the phone didn't reboot. As soon as i activate sim and get mobile network connection, the jolla reboots.

Edit 20.05.2015: Anyone with this problem please see this answer, it seems that they finally have a clue about how to fix this issue.

I'm experiencing this same problem starting today. I haven't installed any new updates / apps since the last SW update 2 days ago. Sometimes after the shut down the phone refuses to turn back on. Trying different things with the phone now to track the problem down.

EDIT: After the shut down happens, the phone turns back on on first try if I plug in the charger.

I have my Jolla phone turned on for 24/7 and it's also updated to this recent firmware and haven't ever seen such unintentional shut downs. None. Nothing even close to that. So definitely can't confirm this. There is a change you may have problems with hardware.

I've had 2 reboots so far, but both were before 1.0.2.5 update and while I was not actively using the device. I can't really say anything else about the cases, but I think I had nothing special running, just WiFi/3G and Settings or something. What apps and networks are you using when this happens?

  1. Did you try hard reset for solve some issue ?
    1. if yes, try to run CSD tool on your phone for discover any abnormal hardware malfunctionality before return your product for hardware repair
    2. pully down, select phone, input code (i can't show the code) and follow instructions and we wait feedback you can find the code here http://jollafr.org/un-utilitaire-secret-pour-tester-toutes-les-fonctionnalites-de-votre-jolla/

Ok, so after removing my battery for a longer period (roughly 10 minutes) the problem vanished. Seems like a software glitch. I cannot recreate this behavior for now, but I'll monitor my workflow in case the problem reappears.

Have to wonder if it is some bad ram... sometimes when it's booting up it will take about 5 - 15 attempts at booting (getting to different places each time). Then there is a fairly good chance that opening any app will crash it at some point.

Address-space-randomisation + some bad ram somewhere could cause this, not sure how to test the hypothesis though?

Will try an eraser on the battery, have been having this bug for about 10 months, phone is incredibly unreliable.

Hey to all,

my Jolla had a lot of shutdowns and restarts. I tried cleaning Accu-Contacts, fold a piece of paper to increase the pressure of the Accu, pulled out the micro-sd-card, made a factory reset, and many other things. Nothing helped, i even had a lot of restarts and shutdowns.

2 days ago i checked the screw of my Jolla. Some of them were loose !!!!! I tooked a screwdriver screwed the the loose screws and the screws which weren't loose i screwed a half turn more solid. (CAREFULLY!!!)

Now the restarts hopefully gone.

Best regards az2111

I had exactly the same promblem with my phone since the latest upgrade - it constantly reboots when the GSM signal is weak.

After a few month using Jolla phone I observed sudden reboots, mainly at higher power consumption of the phone (incoming call, areas with low GSM availability, logging into WLAN, using the camera, accessing the SD-card, etc.), sometimes with infinite boot loops.

I tried the three proposals of the first post of this thread (piece of paper, rubber the contacts, etc.), however, with no success. Also sent my phone to Jolla care and received a new battery. After a few month (~3) the sudden reboots returned. I did not detect any hints for battery overheating (at the moment my phone gets really warm on the outside cover without rebooting) and the CSD-Tool said battery is in "good" shape.

While the reboots became very annoying I, started to switch to another phone as my main device. During that time I used the Jolla as a secondary device for listening to audio dramas, web surfing, etc. and let it automatically shut down at 2 or 3% and charged it up again to 100%.

After approximately 3 month - due to the very good usability of the phone ;-) - I started to use the Jolla as my main device again and observed no sudden reboots. However, during that period I started again "inbetween charging", meaning that I charged it in the night being e.g., at 30% battery power, to have a fully charged phone in the morning, or to connect it to the wire for a while to have enough power for the afternoon. After a few weeks, sudden reboots returned.

From that time on, I decided to fully discharge the pone an charge it again up to 100% every time. I'm doing this for about two month now and observed only one sudden reboot in an area with low GSM availability. I'm not much into the technical details, but it may mean that computation of battery power is disturbed by discontinuous charging in process of time. Altogether, fully discharging and charging the pone led to a very good power stability for my phone.

check this also. From the horses mouth. ;)

It is true that capacity metering is adversely affected by all too frequent charging. This however is not specific to the Jolla phone but affects pretty much any device that employs some "smart battery management". It is recommended to do a full charge cycle every 3-4 weeks or so to rectify it. Still, even if the percentage is incorrect, this should not cause a device to shut down prematurely, because if it does then there is seriously something wrong with the battery management and in that case it does more harm to the battery than good. Frequent charging is even recommeded for a long lifetime of a LiPo cell. Some phone batteries treted that way are reported to last more than eight years without too much of a performance loss. I tend to keep mine between 20% and 90% SOC and since i got my first cellphone in 1998, i never got any problems with that.

I tried probably every described option and nothing worked to me.

Finally I decided to replace poppy red the first one TOH with default white one... and it's about a week without restart.

edit:

Nope, it didn't help. Again get the problem, Jolla after a few restarts said that battery is low, when I plug in it says battery is on 53%.

So it's probably not the issue with TOH.

For me this confirms together with all the other answers and my own experiance that this shutdown- and reboot-issue is caused by a mechanically / hardware reason ... we have a superb OS on a crappy phone, unfortunately.

PLEASE Jolla bring us soon a new and better device!!

Indeed, the trick with the eraser worked for me. A few days without reboot. :-)

PS: Don't use anything else to clean the battery contacts and even more for the contacts in the phone. It is gold covered and gold is a very soft metal. One can scratch it off quite easily and then you will have real connection problems.

I read so much bullshit about this problem I think it needs to be clarified.

I also had this reboot problem. After several attempts it seems it is more likely to fail when data is enabled. Conclusion the problem comes from the GSM chip.

On most of electronic devices, when you restart it, only the CPU is reset. So you need to unplug the battery several seconds and then plug it back to do a "hardware reset" on all device components. And hop, no problem anymore.

Let's just hope this bug won't be back soon or a fix from the Jolla team.

I tend to disagree - during this years all data cumulated is pointing to physical/HW with battery connectors.

Maybe someone with access to a 3D printer could try to make a modified battery frame that is thicker on the bottom and thinner on the top where the contacts are. This would increase pressure on the spring loaded contacts. Still i don't think this woud make much of a difference. It might be just me bein lucky with manufacturing tolerance but in my Jolla the battery is quite a snug fit and i can't even fit a piece of paper in like someone already suggested. Still i get this issue from time to time (every 3-4 weeks or so). Battery got tested with a professional battery tester. ESR, capacity and voltage is A+, so the battery is definitely not at fault. Also all contacts are squeaky clean and undented.

I found one way to reproduce this defently (but this might not be the cause to this specific problem).

I have an Charger in the care with an defect charging cable. This Cable works but somehow its awesomely slow. My old Android often complained that its unloading faster than its loading.

i found out that this was due to an loose contact.

Now the interesting, as soon i moved the cable and so caused power fluctuating all other phones taken that without problem.

In that moment, the jolla, always restarts.

I had the same problem, took out the battery, looked at where the spring of the phone's casing pushes the battery towards the contacts and saw a dent in the battery. My guess is that the spring has a very (too) short range of action and that therefore the dent causes reduced pressure on the contacts, leading to the reported reboots at increased current consumption.
That's probably why 'moving the contacts in and out for 10-15 times', or 'cleaning the contacts' seem to work.
But the best option imho is to restore the spring's action by putting a piece of paper, plastic or tape where the spring is pushing against the battery, in order to restore the pressure on the contacts to a value that it is designed for.
This clearly is a design failure imnsho.

One Possible Reason for random Shut-downs of the Jolla Phone

Ok, as I had exactly the same issue, my phone Shut-down 2-3 times a day without any Reason, it seams. Than I recognised that it does that always in my Pocket with other stuff in there. ###So it seams like the issue is in my case about the power button which is pressed by different Items in my Pocket. Even so it seams pretty stupid but that was the reason in my case. So it could help to put the Jolla the other way around in to the pocket or don't put to many Items else in there.

Still this is a construction problem never before experience this issue with another phone.

But still I love my Jolla (especially the OS!;) and I use it every day!
