Currently I see options to send(share) contact card only via Bluetooth or e-mail. It will be good to have a possibility to share via SMS, which is the most commonly used way(at least for me).

EDIT: Already implemented via MMS in 1.0.5.16&19.

Original question/request not fulfilled

EDIT: Currently, sending contact information via SMS seems to require manual copy-paste of separate lines from People to Messages, and additionally the "edit" is required in People to get the lines copied.

Note: Currently People > contact > Share > Bluetooth / MMS / Email are options to send a vcf (vcard) file

Maybe it has something to do with the MMS support that is missing (as the contact card is usually sent as a file)?

I have just suffered from the same missing feature. The option for sharing contact over SMS is still not present and I didn't figure out an easy way how to copy the phone number of a contact and paste into SMS message.

A few minutes ago the Jolla's Facebook page announced that MMS support is coming soon so I hope that the vcard sharing feature will be also included in the update for the MMS.

Just because android and iOS are unable to make use of a feature which was there for close to over a decade before they started to make phones does not mean that the former ruler of the mobilephone-market did a bad thing by implementing something so easy that it hurts... ever sent an MMS abroad? I get charged for the data separately! SMS are just SMS and in some countries just for free ever always. The need for sending a contacts number or two numbers and the birthday does not need to be a file.vcf sent via MMS, that is just bare overkill. Reopened as the initial question is not resolved!

I really would like to be able to share a contact via SMS. Currently it's possible to share some contact's phone numbers manually by going in to contact's edit mode and copying the number there. But it seems to be impossible to copy a number from a contact that is synced from a Google account, as the phone numbers are in read only mode (cannot select and copy the characters). To me an acceptable workaround would be to have a "Copy number" item in the long press menu of contacts (next to Edit, Add / Remove from favourites and Delete).

@Neo is right: for modern phones, this depends on MMS. Nokia had an extension (which they called "Smart Messaging", I believe) which sent contact cards with normal concatenated SMS, but as far as I know that wasn't implemented by many phones and isn't implemented by any modern phones.

Once MMS support is available, we intend to add vcard sharing and will try to be compatible with as many phones as we reasonably can.

Would be a welcomed feature..

I second this. It would be useful to have any kind of SMS shortcut for this feature.

Do contact cards in SMS (smart messaging?) work on Android and iPhone or was it a Nokia-only thing?

mjtorn ( 2014-01-25 21:22:53 +0300 )edit

@mjtorn That method (as implemented in ofono, at least) wasn't accepted by any smartphone I could test at the time. We need MMS.

This is probably the single most frequent use of MMS. Lacking global copy/paste, I had to memorize the number and type it in an SMS. Bluetooth doesn't work over a distance of 5 km, and I wasn't sure the recipient was at his email.

this only applies as android and iOS are now "most of the market" - dumb move to use MMS for vcards!

Hey all, This missing feature started to hit my threshold, but before starting to hack something together I will ask the Jolla crew on the community meeting to doublecheck if it is not on their roadmap accidentally. https://together.jolla.com/question/54157/sailfishos-open-source-collaboration-meeting-planning/

If they are not planning to implement it I will create a share plugin for this purpose.

I sent someone a contact via MMS today, cost about 35c I reckon. Where as SMS would have been free

I really miss the feature to send a 'Business card' via SMS from my Nokia 5110
